My invention relates to surgical appliances,
and more specifically, to a novel type of sanitary guard or protective appliance.
An object of my invention is to provide a protective cover or hood which can be used to cover or protect a body appendage with a minimum of discomfort.
A second object is to provide an expandible protective cover which can be used at or near the end of a body appendage.
Another object is to provide a protective cover for a body appendage which can be sealed to the appendage to retain its position, prevent the admission of alien matter and the loss or spreading of any pus or other matter caught within the cover.
A further object is to provide a protective cover with a secondary expandible tip to carry and segregate a discharge and prevent its accumulation in the primary tip, where it might cause pressure or become harmful or irritating.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my invention with the secondary tip collapsed.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my invention with the secondary tip expanded.
Fig. 3 is a section along the axis 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a variation of my invention.
Fig. 5 is a rear view of another variation of my invention.
Fig. 6 is a section along the line 66 of Fig. 5.
In the drawing and in the specification, in which like numerals indicate corresponding elements, my appliance l0 shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, is comprised of a hood or body portion II, with an adhesive layer [2 situated on its inner face l3 adjacent its open end which is covered by a removable covering tape l2, and a hollow accordion fingerlike portion 14 is integrally formed at the other end of the body portion II. The body portion II is formed with an integral lip extension I l which is not covered by an adhesive surface to facilitate removal of the appliance after use.
The hood or body portion is round and hollow and has a comparatively large open end. The hood gradually decreases in size toward the 2 fingerlike portion 14 forming the arcuate shoulder l5 and comparatively small neck l6 which joins the body portion to the accordion on finger portion 14. This finger portion is larger at its rear end where it joins the body portion than at-its forward end M and is formed throughout of thinner material than the body portion.
The accordion fingerlike portion I4 normally rests collapsed at the neck l6 but can open or spread on the insertion of any material into it through the neck I 6. Thus the finger l4 provides a safe and sanitary storage space for any pus or other discharge, removing it from the proximity of the body and preventing any tendency for the discharge to cause a pressure to be exerted against the body.
The appliance is made of soft, thin, highly expandible rubber or similar material, and the adhesive layer may be of any desired substance capable of causing the adherence of the appliance material to the human body. It is essential, however, that although the substance used should cause suflicient adhesion for normal purposes, it should produce a bond which is easily broken when a separation is desired.
In the variations shown in Fig. 4, my appliance 20 is formed with an elongated body portion 2| open at one end and having an adhesive layer 22 on its inner face 23, with a hollow accordion fingerlike portion 24 located at the other end of the body portion.
In the variation shown in Figs. 5 and 6 my appliance 30 is formed with a shield-like body portion 3| which is slightly convex, and an accordion-like finger portion 32 which is capable of being folded back against convex face 33 of the body portion. The finger, which is formed of thinner material than the body portion, is larger at its base 34 where it joins the body portion than at its head end 35.
A part 36 of the body portion, extending across the base 34 of the finger, is provided with an opening 31 which forms a passage into the finger, and is also formed with an integral lip or tab 36 to facilitate removal of the appliance after use.
A rear face 38 on the concave side of the body portion is provided at its periphery with an adhesive coating 39, such as has been heretofore described, but this coating does not cover the tab 36. The adhesive coating is protected by a gauze cover 40 which can be removed when the appliance is about to be used. In order to facilitate the removal of the gauze, it is provided with a tab or lip 41 which can be easily grasped and pulled to remove the gauze, thus exposing the adhesive coating.
The accordion finger and the body portion may be round as shown in the previous figures or oval shaped as shown in Fig. 6, depending upon the shape of the appendage upon which it is to be used.
The body portion and the fingerlike portion described in the preferred form of my invention and in the variations, provide "a protective cover for a suitable body appendage with the fingerlike portion providing an additional receptacle or secondary tip capable of holding pus or other extraneous matter away from the body, thus accomplishing the objects of my invention. y
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of r:v invention, it is to beunderstood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the'appen'ded claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A protective appliance comprised of a shield and a 'hollow Tingerlike element, the fingerlike element being 'foldable in accordion fashion'and positioned on and joined to the face of the shield, the shield being formed with an opening into the fingerlike element and provided with an adhesive coating on its rear face said shield being formed with an integral non-adhesive lip or extension and a removable gauze cover over the adhesive coating, the said cover having an integral non-adhesive lip coextensive with said first lip suitable for gripping to facilitate the removal of-the cover and the exposure of the adhesive coating, and said fingerlike element being collapsible against the face of said shield.
