UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK M. SMILEY, OF GOSHEN, INDIANA.
FARM-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,988, dated July 5, 1881.
Application filedMay 5,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. SMILEY, a citizen of the United States, resident of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Gates and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of my gate. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
This invention relates to an improvement in gates; and it consists in the improved features of construction and combination hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings the letters A A designate two gate-sections constructed in any suitable manner and arranged for sliding action.
Pivoted to the upper portions, near the forward or meeting ends of the gate-sections, are the vertically vibrating and operating levers a a, which are also pivoted to fixed supports at or near their lower ends. As the perpendicular height of these levers exceeds the height of the 'gates, they have a tendency to raise the same clear of the ground when operated. This is designed to be accomplished from the road-bed by means of the cranks or rods F F, actuating the connecting-rods c e, and the operating-bar 0, running across the road parallel with the gate.
In the road-bed, at suitable distances on opposite sides of the gate, are pivoted the cranks or bows F, which may traverse the road its entire width, and are provided with slotted plates at, to actuate the rods 0 e and their connections in the process of opening and closing the gate from whatsoever point the wheels of the vehicle may strike them.
0 represents a bar or slide running across the road-bed, and held in position by means of suitable bearings and cleats or guides t a, which bear, respectively, lower faces. The cleats or keepers m on also serve to hold the slide in a working position. The bar 0 is provided with the racks an, which are engaged by the pinions s s on the vertically-operating levers a a, respectively above and below their pivotal bearings, as shown in the drawings.
B represents a T-shaped dou ble-actin g lever having connected to each of its wings one of the connecting-rods e, and secured or pivoted by its power end to the transverse bar 0 at one side of the road-bed.
G G indicate panels of a fence on opposite sides of the gate, the upper rails of which serve as guides or bearings for the rollers t t, which are journaled in the rear portions or uprights, h, at the top of each gate-section, and bear on the rails of the fence, which are connected to the gate by means of loops or guides 12, being secured to the gatesections and passing around the fencerail,
The road cranks or bows running across the road are held in vertical position by means of suitable springs, l, as indicated in the drawlugs.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the sliding gate-sec tions, the vibratory levers pivoted to the upper portions of the'sections, the transverse slide-rack a, connecting-rods e c, slotted plate m, T-lever, and spring road-cranks, as shown and described.
upon its upper and In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK M. SMILEY.
