SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,946, dated July 5, 1881.
Application filed May 17, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, ERASTUS H. MURRAY, of Naperville, in the county of Du Page, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new1 and useful Improvements in ClothesWashers 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in clothes-washers, and it consists in the combination and arrangement of the various part-s, as more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a vertical sectional view of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 represents a bottom view of the same; and Fig. 3 a detached view of a portion of the device in detail.
The letter A indicates the outer casing of my apparatus, consisting of a lower frustumshaped section open at the bottom, and an upper cylindrical section having a cap, B, at the top, with an opening', C, at the center for the passage of a rod, D, which extends upward, and is provided with a suitable handle, by means of which the device may be manipulated.
The letter E indicates a frustum-shaped shell secured to the lower end of the rod D within the shell A. To the under side ot' the top F of the shell E are secured a series of depending beaters, G. The lower ends of these are rounded and are flush with the lower e'nd or edge of the inner shell.
The letter H indicates a perforated diaphragm or partition located in the lower end of the cylindrical section of the outer casin g, A, dividing said casing into two compartments.
In the upper compartment, secured to the rod D, is a reciprocating piston, I, having a suitable packing, K, at its edge, the said piston being adapted to work vertically in the cylindrical upper portion of the casing A. Below said piston, and bearing against it and the diaphragm, is a spiral spring, L, which holds and returns the piston I' and rod D to a normal position.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The lower end of the outer casing or shell is placed upon the clothes in an ordinary tub, which is properly charged with water and the usual detergents. The device is operated by reciprocating the rod vertically. The downward stroke forces the air from the lower part of the cylindrical extension through the clothes, the beaters at the same time workin g the clothes so as to facilitate the clean sing. On the upward stroke, which is facilitated by the recoil of the spiral spring, the clothes will be drawn to the mouth of the outer shell, A, by the exhaustion of air in the cylindrical portion of said Shell, and the water will be dra-wn through the clothes, thus thoroughly subjeetin g them to the action of the detergent liquid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination, with the outer shell, A, provided with a perforated diaphragm or partition, H, and centrally-perforated cap B, of the reciprocating rod D, inner shell, E, beaters F, pist-on I, and spiral spring L, all arranged to operate substantiallyin the manner specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of April, 1881.
ERASTUS H. MURRAY.
