UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HALTER R BRASSIERE Murray-Kay, New York, N. Y.
ApplicationJuly 12, 1944, Serial No. 544,5 1?
2 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to halters or brassires and like women's apparel.
A halter may serve as the upper portion of various sport costumes, as when combined with slacks, shorts, bathing trunks, divided skirts and the like.
The purpose of a halter is to provide the greatest possible exposure of the upper portion of the body for sun bathing and general warm weather comfort and yet possesses the necessary coverage and support required by such apparel.
Halters have heretofore been made in one set style, or arrangement, making no allowance for the various sizes of bust of the individual wearers. Hence ready-made halters fit very few persons perfectly, and the majority require more or less extensive alterations after purchase, in order to obtain proper fitting and present a smart appearance.
Hence, an object of my invention is to provide a halter which is adjustable to fit a range of sizes within certain limits, and which requires no alteration and thus is immediately wearable.
Another object, of my invention is to afford each individual wearer a wide choice of styles or arrangements in which my halter may be worn.
A. feature of my invention comprises vtying means disposed at the front of the halter which is adapted for variant positioning, thus Varying the appearance of the halter, and also properly adjusted for fit of the garment with respect to the individual wearer.
Further features and objects of the invention will be more fully understood from the following detail description and the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the halter, as the same appears when not in use;
Fig. 2 is a front perspective View of the halter showing one style of wearing the same;
Fig. 3 is a front perspective View of the halter showing another manner of wearing; and
Fig. 4 is also a front perspective view of the halter showing still another manner of wearing the same.
Referring to the drawings, the halter, designated generally [0, may be constructed as by properly cutting the material, and stitching the same as at H, ll, and darts l2, l2, for the formation of bust pockets l3, l3, at symmetrical locations centrally of the garment to afford substantial fit for any given range, say for age range, as childrens sizes to 16, misses sizes 10 to 18, etc. The sides of the halter merge into narrowed ends M, M, serving as tie means, for securing 2 the garment in place about the body of the wearer.
Tw shoulder straps or ties l5, 15, secured as by stitching to the top of the garment, serve to support the garment from the neck of the wearer.
The body of the halter I6 is provided with streamers or tie means [6, ll, which may be fastened, say :by stitching, to the front and the back of the halter respectively, and advantageously by passing through the opening [8, located as shown, intermediate the upper and lower sides of the apparel.
Streamers l6 and ll may be adjusted and positioned in several arrangements, after securing the halter by means of the tie ends [4, M, and the shoulder straps l5, l5.
Gne manner of arrangement is by positionillg the streamers l6, ll, about the upper portion of the garment, as indicated in Fig. 2, and tying their ends in a bow, imparting a smart appearance to the halter as well as enhancin the same with a bow decoration.
The arrangement shown in Fig. 3 is of the general nature of that shown in Fig. 2. However, smartness of appearance and additional decorative effect are attained by tying the streamers l6 and H more'tautly as compared with the arrangement shown in Fig. 2.
Another style or manner is that shown in Fig. 4. Here the front streamer I6 is passed upwardly over the top of the halter and drawn down over the rear and then pulled upwardly over the front side of the garment, and the streamer ll passed upwardly over the rear of the halter and then downwardly over the front, and its end tied to the end of the streamer I6, as in a bow. Such arrangement of the streamers l6, ll, may be varied in relative tautness and corresponding variation in the final configuration of the halter.
The relative positioning of the streamers I6, ll, may be reversed with respect to the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, if desired.
It is apparent that the streamers IE, IT, may be a single length of selected material and passed through and secured in the opening l8, or two separate pieces of material sewed respectively to the front and rear of the halter.
If an opening is employed, the style shown in Fig. 4 is attained, namely by pulling streamer i6 down the front of the garment and drawing it up at the rear thereof to pass through opening 18 and tying it to streamer H, which has been drawn up and over the top and front of the halter.
It will be apparent that another effect is had by tying the respective streamers about the lower portion of the halter, the converse of that shown in Fig. 2.
The halter may be worn in even additional styles. One such additional manner is by positioning the shoulder straps I5, I5, under the arms to tie at the back. Such positioning affords complete exposure of the shoulders to the sun with perfect security of protection. Another manner is by positioning one shoulder strap under the armpit and one over the shoulder, in accord with the latest fashion of other garments. Also, the shoulder straps I5, I5, may be criss-crossed at the rear, and their ends secured at the back of the wearer. Snap fasteners or buttons, buttonholes or other suitable means may be provided for securing the end portions of the respective sets of tie elements of the halter.
If a buttonhole is provided at I8, the streamers IE, Il, may be removed altogether, thus eliminating any bow or other tying decorations whatever.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the invention lends itself to ready and simple adjustment and the attainment of lit for a range of sizes and variant configurations of bust.
The invention is applicable not only to outer sportswear alone, but also for brassieres in which category adjustability and comfort are of prime importance.
From the above, it is apparent that the halter r brassiere apparel pursuant to the invention comprises a central body portion of fabric having an upper side and a lower side and two lateral sides, two portions of fabric each of elongated general triangular configuration, the bases of said triangular portions being respectively attached to said lateral sides of said central body portion, tucks being formed in said triangular portions respectively adjacent the lines of attachment to said central body portion; a set of straps secured at their respective fixed ends to said upper side of said central body portion and serving when their free ends are connected at the back of the wearer to support said central body portion; and a pair of streamers positioning at their respective inward ends to said central body portion at a location intermediate of its said upper and lower sides, such streamers 4 being preferably arranged to extend respectively forwardly and rearwardly of said central body portion.
Whereas I have described my invention by reference to specific forms thereof, it will be understood that many changes and modifications may be made provided they do not depart from the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A halter or brassire apparel comprising in combination, a central body portion of fabric having an upper side and a lower side and two lateral sides; two portions of fabric each of elongated general triangular configuration, the bases of said triangular portions respectively attached to said lateral sides of said central body portion, the free portions of said triangularly configurated portions terminating in narrow ends and arranged to be connected to one another; a set of straps secured at their respective fixed ends to said upper side of said central body portion serving when their free ends are connected together at the back of the wearer to support said central body portion; and a pair of streamers positioned at their respective inward ends to said central body portion at a location intermediate its said upper and lower sides.
2. A halter or brassiere apparel as defined by claim 1 in which said pair of streamers extend respectively forwardly and rearwardly of said central body portion.
