UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEv 8 Claims.
This invention relates to vaginal depositors and applicators and more particularly to those which may be everted by remote control after internal positioning.
The principal object of this invention is to provide an improved tampon or core which can be spread Open and unfolded after it has been properly located so as to expose a large absorptive area or to apply medication previously placed within its folds.
This tampon may be used with any of the usual one or two tube tampon ejectors.
The object of my invention is to provide a means of self-application of a tampon of this type which will be more positive in its action than others now in use and the interior of which may be made sterile and kept in that state until operated by the traction cord associated therewith.
In accordance there is produced a useful and practical device. It will remain sterile throughout the entire cycle of positioning, extrusion and eversion due to its remote control operation. It is easy to manufacture and low in cost. It is of simple construction and easy to operate. It is a self-contained unit. It does not require in its operation the use of additional instrumentalities. It is disposable as a complete unit after usage.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear from the following description of the preferred embodiments illustrative of the invention and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a front view of the tampon unfolded before folding and compressing into a cylindrical shape showing the disposition of the combination traction and withdrawal loop.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the tampon accordion folded into a W formation and partially compressed into a cylindrical shape.
Fig. 4 is a front view of the tampon compressed into a, cylindrical shape showing the body part of the tampon extruded from the mouth of a container tube with the base part of the tampon within the container tube prior to the application of traction to the draw string.
Fig. 5 is a front view of the unfolded tampon showing possible variations in shape.
This internal depositing and applicating device consists of a tampon with a body part and a base part, a combination traction and withdrawal loop which is woven through the body part and extends up the back of the body part and over the top down the front and through the container and ejector tubes'into which the tampon is placed after folding. The interior of the tampon is inpregnated with suitable medication or its interior walls may form means for containing medication.
Referring to the drawings, the device therein shown as illustrative of my invention comprises an internal depositing and applicating tampon fashioned from a flat section of absorbent material with a body part I, having an upper edge or crown 2 and lower edges 3 and d with vertical edges 5 and 6 parallel to its longitudinal axis. Extending down from the body part of the tampon between the lower edges 3 and 4 and forming an integral part of the flat section is a base part I with a lower edge 8. Fig. 5 shows a variation in the shape of the base part. The crown 2 may be provided with two shallow slits 9 and in to guide a draw string which is made up and associated with the tampon by passing into and through the front face 12 of the body part of the tampon I at points I3 and I l, passing up the rear face l5, over and depending from the crown 2 and forward into flexible depending cords l6 and H, the free ends of which cords are tied together to form the combination traction and withdrawal loop I l.
The front face l2 of the body part I is woven through at points I 3 and I4 and equipped with the draw string II, It, and H, as indicated. The rear face l5 of the body part I may be impregnated or coated with medicaments. The device is then folded into substantially a W formation with accordion folds as indicated in Fig. 2, with the vertical edges 5 and 6 contiguous, the rear face l5 now on the inside and the front face i 2 on the outside of the formation. The draw strings I6 and I1 depending from slits 9 and I0 are contiguous to the outer face l2. This expanding core formation is then compressed into substantially a cylindrical shape and forced into an outer cylindrical container tube I 8 through which the loop II has previously been passed, the loops being contiguous to the outside surface of the tampon. The container tube l8 may be equipped with a concentric cylindrical inner expellor or ejector tube H. of shorter length and smaller diameter. The difference in length between tubes is and 19 shall be substantially the same as the length of the base part 1.
In the operation of the device, the tampon I is extruded from the container tube iii by means of an ejector tube 19 forced into the container tube as shown in Fig. 4. Due to the difference in the lengths of the tubes, the base part 1' of the tampon remains within the container tube. When the lower edges 3 and 4 of the body part I clears the container tube l8 and the body part is released from the compression under which it was placed when forced into the tube, this dilatable part of the core tends to change its cross section from a circle and to reassume its original accordion folded W shape or flatter due to the natural resilience of the fibers of which it is composed, the base part remaining at this time within the container tube.
Traction away from the outer tube applied to the loop II and guided by the edge of the tube l8 within which it passes, now poises the expellable tampon at the mouth of the container tube 18 for proper positioning. Additional traction unrolls, unfolds and everts said tampon by remote control by first further flattening out the accordion folds and then pulling the crown 2 forward towards the lower edges 3 and 4. This remotely controlled operation practically everts or turns the tampon inside out, the upper edge 2 meeting the lower edges 3 and 4 with the medication'on the outside Where formerly the vertical edges 5 and 6 met with the medication on the inside. After this operation, th tubes may be easily removed. The tampon may later be completely removed as a unit by means of the loop ll.
It is apparent that the details of the device described may be varied without departing from the nature or principle of my invention and it is my intention not to limit the invention to the particular details set forth but to describe one meth- 0d of obtaining the desired end so that said end, being once realized, may be accomplished by changes in the construction and arrangements of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the preferred embodiment illustrative of my invention, I claim:
1. In an internal depositor and applicating device of the kind described, an expellable expanding core and concentric cylindrical inner ejector and outer container tubes therefor, said core, comprising a body part and a base part, being compressed into a substantially cylindrical shape and having flexible depending cords contiguous to the outside surface adjacent to its crown, said cords depending from said crown and passing through said tubes, the free ends of said cords being fastened together to form a combination traction and withdrawal loop, said body part only being extruded from said outer container tube by the full insertion of said inner ejector tube.
2. In an internal depositor and applicating device of the kind described, an expellable expanding core and concentric cylindrical inner ejector and outer container tubes therefor, said core comprising a body part and a base part, said core being compressed into a substantially cylindrical shape and having flexibl depending cords contiguous to the outside surface adjacent to its crown, said cords depending from said crown and passing through said tubes, the free ends of said cords being fastened together to form a combine. tion traction and withdrawal loop, said inner concentric ejector tube being shorter than the outer concentric container tube, said core fitting within and being shorter than said outer tube, by a length equal to the length of said base part.
3. In an internal depositor and applicatin device of the kind described, an expellable expanding core and concentric cylindrical inner ejector and outer container tubes therefor, said core being compressed into a substantially cylindrical shape and having flexible depending cords contiguous to the outside surface adjacent to its crown, said cords depending from said crown and passing through said tubes, the free ends of said cords being fastened together to form a combination traction and withdrawal loop, said inner concentric ejector tube being shorter than the outer concentric container tube, said core fitting within and being shorter than said outer tube, said core comprising a body part and a base part, said body part only being extruded from outer concentric container tube by means of the inner ejector tube.

In an internal depositor and applicating device of the kind described, an expellable expanding core and concentric cylindrical inner ejector and outer container tubes therefor, said core being compressed into a substantially cylindrical shape and having flexible depending cords contiguous to the outside surface adjacent to its crown, said cords depending from said crown and passing through said tubes, the free ends of said cords being fastened together to form a combination traction and withdrawal loop, said inner concentric ejector tube being shorter than the outer concentric container tube, said core fitting within and being shorter than said outer tube, said core comprising a body part and a base part, said body part only being extruded from outer concentric container tube by means of the inner ejector tube, said core being unfolded and everted by remote controlled traction on said cords.

In an internal depositor and applicating device of the kind described, an expellable dilatable core and concentric cylindrical inner ejector tube and outer container tube therefor, said core comprising a flat section of absorbent material with a body part and a base part, compressed into a cylindrical formation with its vertical edges parallel to its longitudinal axis and having flexible cords depending from crown of said core and con tiguous to the outside surface of said core and passing through said tubes, said body part only being extruded from said outer container tube by the full insertion of said inner ejector tube.

In an internal depositor and applicating device of the kind described, an expellable dilatable core and concentric cylindrical inner ejector tube and outer container tube therefor, said core comprising a fiat section of absorbent material with a body part and a base part, compressed into a cylindrical formation with its vertical edges parallel to its longitudinal axis and having flexible cords depending from crown of said core and contiguous to the outside surface of said core and passing through said tubes, said formation being adapted to be unrolled and everted by remote controlled traction on said cords, said core bein capable of impregnation with suitable medication, the walls of said formation forming means for containing medications to be released when said formation is opened and its walls are dilated by said traction applied to said cords after extrusion from outer concentric container tube, said body part only being extruded from said outer container tube by the full insertion of said inner ejector tube.
7. In an internal depositor and applicating device of the kind described, an expellable expanding core and concentric cylindrical inner ejector and outer container tubes therefor, said core, comprising a body part and a base part, being compressed into a substantially cylindrical shape and having flexible depending cords contiguous to the outside surface adjacent to its crown, said 5 cords depending from said crown and passing through said tubes, the free ends of said cords being fastened together to form a combination traction and withdrawal loop, said inner concentric ejector tube being shorter than the outer concentric container tube,'said core fitting within and being shorter than said outer tube, the difference in length between said outer and inner tubes being substantially the length of the base part, said body part only being extruded from said outer 10 through said tubes, the inner ejector tube bein forced into said outer container tube extruding said body part only from said container tube so that the lower edges of said body part are clear of said container tube, said base part remaining within said container tube, the application of traction to said depending cords in a direction away from said outer container tube unfolding and everting said core.
