Description

i UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. TENDLER, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN F. MOESGHLIN, OF SAME PLACE.
SOFA-BEDSTEAD.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 24,267, dated May 31, 1859.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, VILLIAM H. TENDLER, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Scfa-Bedstead; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l denotes a top view of the bedstead in an unfolded state; Fig. 2, a front elevation, Fig. 3, an end view, and Fig. 4, a transverse section of it under such circumstances. Fig. 5, is a front elevation of it as it appears when folded together in the form of a sofa.
In such drawings, A represents the main frame-work, consisting of a. bed frame a, furnished with a back Z2 and the stationary part c, of one of the arm rests, the three parts being secured immovably with respect to one another, and arranged together as shown in the drawings.
To the front edge of the bed frame or bottom c of the frame, another bed frame B is hinged by hinges d, d, andin such manner as to be capable of being either turned over upon the first bed frame as shown in Fig. 5, or down into a horizontal plane with it as shown in the other figures. The said bed frame B has turning legs e, e, applied to one edge of it, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to enable it to be supported by such when in position as shown in Figs. l and 2. Preparatory to the bed frame B being moved over upon the frame A, the said legs are to be turned up into recesses f, f, formed in the edge of the frame B, as shown in Fig. 2; The underside of the frame B, may be cushioned or upholstered as seen at g, in Figs. 4, and
To the stationary part c of the arm rest C a movable cushioned part 7L is hinged by hinges arranged as shown at c', z', and so that the part 71, may either be turned outward into the same plane with the part c, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or inward alongside of the part c, as shown in Fig. 5. Each of the parts c and 7L is recessed as shown at 7c, 7c, and so as to receive one of two movable pillar rests l, m, hinged to the said part so as to be capable of being either folded into the recess or down upon the adjacent bed frame as shown in Figs. l, and 2. Furthermore, the other arm rest D is composed of two parts or frames n, o, which are hinged together as shown at p, p, in Fig. l. The part n is hinged to the end of the bed frame a and so as to be capable of being moved from the position shown in Fig. 5 down into that eX- hibited in Figs. l and 3, or vice versa. A turning leg 1 or s is applied to each part n, a., in order to aid in supporting it when in a horizontal position. Furthermore, each part n, 0, is recessed to receive a cushioned foot-rest E or F, hinged to it so as to be capable of being turned out of the recess and over upon the end of the next adjacent bed rest. A bolt t and a screw u or other suitable devices may be applied to the frameY A, for the purpose of holding the movable part upward against the back b, when the same may be desirable. Each movable part L, 0, may be cushioned or upholstered (as shown at w or 11) on that side of it which is opposite to the one which folds against the reinainder of the arm rest.
Besides the above, each of the bed frames maj,7 be constructed with a spring rbed foundation or so as in any proper manner to carry a cushion or mattress, or bed. l/Vhen the parts are folded together they form a sofa, but when unfolded they constitute an excellent bed, suiicient for two persons to repose upon. Y
I claiml. The improved sofa bed constructed not only with each of its arm rests formed in two parts and hinged together, arranged and applied to the back b, and bed frame a, as described but with its seat hinged to the bed frame so as to be capable of being moved with respect to it4 and the arm rests as specied.
2. I also claim the combination of the pillow and foot rests Z, m, E, and F, with the arm rests and seat frame or seat, applied to the frame A, the whole being made to operate together essentially as explained.
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature.
