Description

June 17, 1947. F. E. HORNBECK PEN AND PENCIL RETAINER Filed June 13, 1945 EA/wrEERA/B 561% Patented June 17, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to garments or the like and has for its object to provide a pen and pencil retainer detachably connected to a garment by means of which a pen, pencil or other similar article may be securely held against accidental displacement.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a device which is invisible whereby the appearance of a garment will not be disfigured.
A further object of the invention is to provide a retaining device for supporting pens, pencils and the like to the body of a garment whereby a pocket flap will not be injured or pulled out of shape by the weight of article supported thereby or pressure in securing the articles in place.
And a, further object of this invention is to provide means for holding pencil points out of contact with the lining of a pocket, thus avoiding the puncturing and wearing out of the lining.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view illustrating my invention and its application,
Figure 2 is a top view of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an elevational view looking at one end of the device, and
Figure 4 is a section in line 4-4 of Figure 2.
In the accompanying drawings as above enumerated and in the following specification, like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout and in which indicates my invention which consists of an oblong plate or strip ll, of thin resilient material, such as sheet steel, hard rubber or plastic, the ends I2 and I3, of which are rounded and on each of said ends is a snap button cap l4 and 15, for engagement with the buttons I6 and H, attached to the body l8, of a garment l9, which garment may be a vest.
The plate I l, is formed slightly arcuate for two reasons; first, to permit the snap 20, to be easily passed over the upper edge 2|, of the plate and secondly, to conform to the contour of the body of a wearer. The plate II, is provided with a series of longitudinal parallel rows 22, 23 and 24, of apertures 25, 26 and 21, to receive balls 28, of snaps 20, carried on the clips 28', which hold pens or pencils 29. These horizontally spaced rows of apertures permit vertical adjustment of the pencils whereby the points thereof may be kept out of contact with the bottom 30, of the pocket 3!, thus avoiding puncturing the goods thereof. 7
By placing my retainer behind the flap edge 32,
of the pocket it becomes invisible and does not I alter the natural appearance of the pocket through exposing the device. Its application to the garment proper rather than to the pocket flap avoids dragging down the pocket either through its own weight and that of the pens and pencils, and more particularly through the pressure in attaching such articles to the pocket forming material. It is obvious that the device is easily and quickly removable for attaching to a purse or when sending the garment to a cleaner. It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having ow described my invention that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
In combination with a garment having a pocket, an article retainer mounted within said pocket and upon the wall thereof in concealed position, said retainer comprising a transversely elongated strip, fastening means at the ends of said strip for detachably securing the same to said wall of said pocket and a plurality of vertically spaced, horizontal roWs of apertures in said strip for detachable selective engagement by an article retaining clip, the apertures of adjacent rows being staggered, said strip being arcuately I curved transverse to its longitudinal axis in conformity with the contour of the person of the user.
