UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH W. ROGERS, ()F SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOT AND SHOE TIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,423, dated MaylO, 1881.
' Application filed June 21, 1880.
To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH W. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Boot and Shoe Tip, Filling, and Shank; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will preferably molded, of vulcanized india-rubber,
as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichi Figure l .represeuts a plan view of my in-.
vention, and Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section of a shoe provided with my improved tip, filling, and shank-piece combined.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
The object of this invention is to make a tip which, when secured to the boot or shoe, shall also serve as a water-proof filling, to prevent it dampness from striking through the bottom of the boot or shoe, in addition to its rear extension and service as a shank-piece for giving the desired filling or fullness to the central part of the shank when covered by the outer sole.
My invention, when united to a boot 0r shoe by means of sewing or pegging, as usual, will render it more elastic and of a much neater appearance as compared with others in which the tip, filling, and shank are made in separate pieces. I
In making boots and shoes with my inven- (No model.)
tion a good deal of labor is saved, as my improved tip, filling, and shank-piece may be lasted to the upper and inner sole at one operation, whereas in the ordinary way the tip and filling and shank-piece had each to be lasted separatelyto the shoe.
On the drawings, a represents the tip with its side extensions, (4 a, filling 1) between the inner and outer soles, and shank-piece c, all molded in one single piece, as and for the purpose described.
In Fig. 3, (Z 01 represent the upper of a boot or shoe, on which 6 is the inner sole, f the outer sole, and g the heel, as usual, and it will be seen in said figure that the filling b and shankpiece 0 are arranged between the inner and outer soles, 6], as and for the purpose set forth, and that the tip a projects in front upward and on each side toward the shank more or less, for protection of the toe and sides of the boot or shoe.
The shank-piece c, which is an extension of the filling, is in the form of a neck or strip, the filling being reduced in width to form the shank. This differs materially from those cases in which the half-sole and tip have beep made in one piece but no shank provided.
Having thus fully described the nature and construction of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim 1. A boot or shoe provided between its inner and outer soles with a filling, 1), formed in one piece with the tip a and the neck or shank c, substantially as described.
2. A boot or shoe provided between its inner and outer soles with the water-proof filling 1), formed integral with the tip a, and the narrow neck or shank c, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my sig- 8 5
