The present invention relates to cushions, pillows, beach bags or the like, and has for its main object the provision of a pocket within which the head of-a person may be inserted, While in a sleeping or reclining position, for the purpose of protecting the users head from drafts, sun, sand,

dust, etc.

A still further object of the present invention is the provision in connection with a pillow or a cushion of a pocket of the character above indicated, and which may be made by sewing to the side of a pillow case or a cushion a sheet of material, attached to the body of the cushion or to a pillow case along its three marginal edges, leaving the fourth edge free, the latter being gathered for the purpose of making it extensible for the purpose of permitting insertion of a persons head into the pocket so formed.

A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a pocket along one side of a pillow case or of a cushion, opened along one of its edges and extensible thereat, so that when in an extended position a person's head may be inserted therewithin for the purpose hereinabove indicated, and when in an inoperative position, may be used as an ordinary compartment for storing therewithin bathing accessories or other objects.

A still further object of the present invention is the provision along one side of a pillow case or of a cushion of a pocket consisting of a substantially rectangular sheet of a material sewn or otherwise attached along its three edges to the body of the pillow case or of a cushion, with the remaining free edge gathered so as to make the same extensible in order that a person's head may be inserted within the pocket when said free edge is extended, with a net attached to the pocket and along said free edge for placing the net over the upper portion of the users body for giving additional protection against insects, when the device is used outdoors, which said net may be folded when not in use and tucked within the pocket made by said sheet and adjacent the wall of a pillow case or of a cushion.

With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying. drawing and pointed out in the appended claims,

Referring in detail to the present drawing there is shown therein a cushion Ill, including an inner compartment H which is stuffed with feathers or other suitable wadding H. The cushion is further provided with a pair of side compartments l3 which are made along the opposite side edges of the cushion, and another compartment I4 made along one of the face sides of the cushion. Access to these three compartments is had through zipper fasteners l5 made adjacent the edges of the cushion and on one face side thereof, as is clearly seen in Fig. 2. Within these three compartments [3 and i4 brushes, soap, towels, bathing suits, etc., may be stored.

On the opposite face side of the cushion a sheet of material It is sewn at three of its side edges to the body of the cushion, and is gathered or pleated as at H, with one edge thereof free as at i8. Said free edge is provided with a hem to receive therewithin two pieces of cord i9, each sewn to the body of the cushion and extended through said hem by virtue of which arrangement said free edge I8 may be extended when said cord 1 9 is untied or gathered when said cord 1 9 is tied, the latter position being shown in Fig. 1.

When cord i9 is untied, said free hemmed edge E8 of sheet it may be extended, without disturbing the remaining edges of said sheet is from their engagement with the face of cushion i ii, and when in an extended position said hemmed edge i 8 will provide a comparatively large mouth providing access into a pocket defined by said sheet it and the adjacent face of cushion It], through and into which a persons head may be positioned, as is seen in Fig. 4. When in use the marginal portion of sheet i6 along the hemmed free edge I 8 will extend over the users forehead and eyes so as to protect the latter from glare. Net 26 may be sewn to the hemmed edge It? of sheet i6, and when the device is not in use said net 26 may be tucked in the pocket defined by said sheet i5 and the adjacent side face of cushion I 6. Otherwise it may be extended over the upper portion of a users 3 body, as shown in Fig. 4, for affording protection against insects.

Although a, cushion is only illustrated in the drawing it is understood that the device may be used in connection with a pillow case, by sewing thereto a sheet, such as sheet I6,

Either a handle or a shoulder strap 2| is attached to the two oppositely disposed side edges of the cushion, whereby the cushion may be conveniently carried.

While there is described herein a, preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What we claim as new is:

1. In combination with a pillow case or the like, a. sheet of material extending over the majorportion of a face of the pillow case and having four edges and attached to one face thereof along three edges, said sheet of material being free and unattached throughout its fourth marginal edge defining a pocket between said sheet and the pillow case extending over the major portion of the area of the pillow case, said sheet being constructed with said marginal edge gathered or pleated and expansible, the size of the expansible portion of the sheet and the area of the pocket being sufl'iciently large to accommodate the human head in the pocket when opened.

2. In combination with a pillow case or the like, a sheet of material extending over the major portion of a face of the pillow case and having four edges and attached to one face thereof along three edges, said sheet of material being free and unattached throughout its fourth marginal edge defining a pocket between said sheet and the pillow case extending over the major portion of the area of the pillow case, said sheet being constructed with said marginal edge gathered or pleated and expansiblethe size of the expansible portion of the sheet and the area of the pocket being sufliciently large to accommodate the human head in the pocket when opened, said marginal edge having guide means thereon, and a cord attached to the pillow case or the like and extending through the guide means for closing the pocket over the head.
