Description

Auga 13, 1946. QTTESEN 2,405,667
RECEPTACLE COVER Filed Jan. 20, 1944 INVENTOR. draw Gites e/z Patented Aug. 13, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a receptacle cover. This application is a continuation in part of my previous application Serial No. 418,637, filed November 12, 1941, and now matured into Patent Number 2,344,894.
This invention proposes the construction of a receptacle cover characterized by a downwardly directed annular channel having an outer wall continuing into a base wall which in turn continues into an inner wall with an annular score line formed within the channel in a manner to permit the cover to be removed from the receptacle by means of a prying tool such as a screw driver, the back of a spoon, or the like.
A further object of the invention proposes forming the score line within the channel in the vicinity of the junction of the base wall with the inner wall so that the bottom portion of the inner wall may be forced inwards relative to the outer wall for opening the cover along the score line.
Still another object of the invention proposes forming the annular score line in the junction of the inner wall with the top wall in a manner so that the top portion of the inner wall may be forced inwards relative to the outer wall to open the receptacle along the score line.
Still another object of the invention proposes the provision of stiffening and reinforcing bands mounted upon portions of the inner wall of the channel in a manner to stiffen the inner wall against being collapsed.
For further comprehension of the invention. and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle in the form of a can having a cover constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged partial vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig.2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of a portion of Fig. 3 showing the can partially opened at the score line.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 but illustrating a modification of the invention.
The receptacle cover, according to this invention, is formed on the ends of a receptacle H] which is in the form of a tin can. The cover ll comprises a downwardly directed annular channel I2 formed with an outer wall [3 continuing into a base wall M which in turn continues into a vertical inner wall I5. The edge portions of the cover are sealed upon the end of the can body by the conventional rolled edge.
An annular score line I6 is formed within the channel l2 at the junction of the base wall i l with the inner wall [5. This permits the receptacle cover H to be removed by forcing the inner wall l5 inwards relative to the outer wall l3 for separating the cover 12 from the can body H1 in the score line I6, as shown in Fig. 4. A prying tool is inserted into the channel l2 and moved in a direction to press the inner wall l5 inwards causing the cover sections to separate at the score line I6. The inner wall l5 being moved inward by pressing from above the base wall l4 and score line Hi.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 5 the construction of the can cover is similar to that previously described, except for the provision of a reinforcing band I! which is mounted in position on the top portion of the inner wall IS. The reinforcing band I! serves to stiffen the top portion of the inner wall l5 and prevent it from being mashed and collapsed under the pressure of the prying tool used for moving the inner wall [5 inwards to breakthe cover I! at the score line 16.
In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several views.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right.
is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
In a receptacle cover having a downwardly directed annular channel formed of an outer-wall which continues into a base wall which in turn continues into an inner wall, and having an annular score line within said channel in the vicinity of the junction of said base wall and inner wall so that the bottom portion of the inner wall may be forced inwards relative to said outer wall for opening said cover along said score line, means for supporting an annular top portion of said inner wall for forming a fulcrum for the bottom portion when pried open along said score line, comprising a reinforcing band fixedly mounted in position on the top portion of the inner face of said inner wall and having its bottom edge portion spaced upwards of said score line.
