.BURIAL BAG Filed May 15, 1944 Patented Apr. 16, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE nunm BAG Thomas E. Tucker, Montgomery, Ala. Application May 15, 1944, Serial No. 535,671
. 1 Claim.
The invention relates to a burial contrivance. and more especially to a burial bag. package, sack or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character, wherein the human body can be placed therein, and completely sealed, it being a substitute for a burial casket or other like structure, and is adaptable for use on land or at sea, as such article is water, moisture and weather element proof, and thus hermetically sealing the dead body, for preserving the same after death.
entrance opening being sealed in a novel and unique manner, while all air can be exhausted from the interior of the article, to eliminate putrefaction to its content.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character, wherein it is seamed only at one side and one end, the opposite side being unitary, while the other end creates an opening for access, the said article being particularly useful for preserving or removal of persons dying in the armed services. 1
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and emcient for the purposes intended thereof, strong,
durable, meat in appearance, readily and easily handled, fully protective 'to a dead body, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of the article constructed in accordance with the invention.
opposite the seamed end edge,
Referring to the drawing in detail; A designates generally the article constructed in accordance with the invention, and B denotes generally one form of construction of fastener for thearticle for sealing the sameat its open end.
The article A comprises a sheet ll) of waterproof material, having a determined inherent flexibility, and this sheet is patterned and cut to provide a package, bag or sack-like elongated body, having a seamless side edge I I, one seamed end edge l2, one seamed side edge i3, opposite the seamless side edge, and an open end edge [4, g respectively. These seamed edges are created in any suitable manner to render the interior of the article water, moisture and air proof when its open end It is closed and completely sealed for the preservation of a dead body 0 when encased within such articles.
The body of the article A is preferably of som translucent substance, yet it may be otherwise involved. The body of the article A is provided with a suitable check valve l5, conveniently located, so that all air can be extracted from the interior when the article is hermetically sealed completely, without liability of. outside air entering the same, and in this manner taking care ofv putrefaction.
In the present instance, the open end bf the body of the article A, after the placement of a.
dead body therein, this open end being of a width engaged in these bars, has the folded closed end engaged therebetween, and finally the bolts ii) are rendered tight, to have the clamp hermetically seal this open end of the body III- of the article A, as best seen in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing.
The article A sealed with the dead body therein will then be in a condition for the burial operation, either in the ground or in the sea, as should be obvious. 'Any other clamping device suitable for the occasion can be substituted for the one shown in the drawing, and this is contemplated within the scope of the invention.
From the foregoing it. is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the r article will be clearly understood, and therefore, a more extended explanation hasbeen omitted for the sake of brevity.
It is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be made in the invention as fall p operly with the scope of the appended. claim, wi hout departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed is: A burial contrivance of the kind described, comprising a. flexible moisture-proof bag having a single fully open end portion, opposed inwardly
