.Application filed December?, 1i-#80.
(No model.) Paten ted-in France Aprill, 1873, and in Germany July 11271879.,v
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownv that I, AMDE BOLLE, av a citizen of 'the French Republic, residing at the city of Le Mans, in the Departmcn tSarthe,
in the French Republic, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Cai`- riages, TractiolrEngines, and Similar Locomotives and I do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clearand exact description of the io invention, suchas will enable lothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures ot` reference marked thereon, which form a part. i 5 4of this specication.
My invention relates to certain improvements 1n steam-carriages; and it consists in an improved construction of the carriage; and it further consists'I of an improved steering-gear,
'2o in combination with driving mechanism, allsnb stantially as hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows in plan a steering-gear as ordinarily constructed. Fig. 2 is a Vertical longitudinal section ot' my improved steamcarriage. Fig. 3 is a horizontal longitudinal section ot'V the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the fore carriage, and Figs. 5,6, and 7 are detail views.
The fore carriage, the wheels of which rotate around two separate gudgeons, like that patented in England in 1875, No. 3,520, is shown in Figl ofthe accompanying drawings. l The displacement of the plane of the fore wheels 3 5 through the medium of the driving-chains C,
secured to ellipses D, will invariably bring the prolonged axis ofthe said wheels to a common point, X. intersecting the axis or the prolongation of the axis ot' the hind Wheels, which 4o results in the fact that the planes ot' all the four wheels are invariably vertical to the radius of the curves transversed.
In Figs. 2, 3, and et l lia\eshown a construction ot' steering-gear by means of levers 45 and rods to take the'place of the ellipsis and chains shown in Fig. l.' ln this construction the vertical axesrot rotation, uv fr, oi' the fore Wheels b b do not lie-in the plane itself of said wheels, but innnediately on one side thereof'.
As shown, these Vertical axes form part of a 5o strong piecey or lever, c, -with the arm c of which are also connected the horizontal axes or short shafts b', upon which the wheels a. a rotate. lo the boxes a of the vertical axes a are connected the supportingsprings d d, and 5 5 Vthe latter serve to support the fore partofthe `.whole vehicle upon the fore wheels;
Ily means of connecting-rods e c and the forked lever f, having the toothed section j", the pinion g, gearing with saidsector j", and the 6o hollow rod G, to'which thepinion is attached, and which carries at its upper eil'd` ahand! wheel, g,.the conductor is enabled to steer the Vehicle.
By means of thc second wheel, h, on the rod H, that'passes through -the hollow rody G, and that also Ycarries at its opposite end a pinion,
h, the brakes i for the hind wheels, le, are manipulated tlnough the medium ot the connecting-rod l, having its forked oi' diverging 7o end 'i' Connected with said brakes, and carry ing a pinion,\z'f2, that meshes with the pinion Il..V
\Vith this new construction of fiore tra-in having tweaxes oi' rotation, the resistance of the roadway to the rotation or turning of the 7 5 fore wheels has no momentum, for the reason .that its leverarm `is practically null, which enables the conductor to steer the vehicle with great facility and rapidity. 1
YIn Fig. I have shown an improvement on 8o the Gallechains,in which is the pivot-pin and L the' links, both preferably nia-de of steel. Each link consists ot' bearings l for the pivotpins and two cheeks, Z2, by means of which construction the tension, as well as the friction, is equally distributed over the whoic length of the bearings, thereby diminishing the wear and elongation of the chains, each pin being suifablyrivetcd orotherwse secured in place, as shown at l. 9o
In the steam-vehicle, as shown hy Fig. 2,
the drivin g-cylinders m m are arranged4 vertically within a slicetanetalhousing, Ml, and rotate, through the medium of cranks in', a longitndinai drivingshaft, N, which latter rotates 91:
thc hind wheels, lc, through the medium of the gear-wheels '/L lt, a differential gear, and the driving-chain I and pulleys t), and Q. This 'differential gearing performs an important lfunction, finasmucli as in turning it'cnables the wheell that has to describe the greatest arc of the circle to rotate with increased speed, although neve'r disconnected from the prime motor, aiid said gearing is constructed to operate as follows:' 'lhe bevel-wheel ai is rigidly mounted upon the drivin g-shaft N, and rotates -S'ect the Shaft NV.
the' shaft W, carrying the driving-pulley Q through the medium of tliedisk-whcel lt, loosely mounted thereon. The latter wheel has two slots, r', opposite each other, and equivdistant from its center, withiii-whicli rotate two bcvel-pinioiis, S and T, mounted iii bearings .sand t formed upon the face o-f said diskwheel It, .the arrangementofsaid wheel being' wheels independently of each other through the medium ot the pulleys C, rigidly connected with the axle-boxes Kf that themselves turn freely upon the wheel-axle K2 and the' pulleys Q, upon shaft W and sleeve ,or hollow shaft W', and to better understandv this independent driving of the two hind wheels suppose the shaft WJIeId stationary while the drivingshaft `N ,is in motion, which results in the rotation ot'. the disk-wheel 0,-loosely mounted on shaft W; and as the two pinions S and 'l are capable of rotatioi'i on said wheel and mesh. with the wheel Uirigidly mounted upon .shaft W,it follows that said wheels will freely rotate without imparting that niotion to shaft W; b ut as lthey .also'mesh with wheel V on thehollow axle W', al rotation ot' said wheel and its sleeve carrying one of the 'pulleys Q, necessarily follows, while the opposite -pulley remains stationary.y If, now, the shaft W is released', the rotation of pinions S and '13 is com inunicated tosaid, shaft also through the medjum of .the wheel U, saidpinion S and T aeting as idlers.
lt will t-,hus be readily 'understood that the rotation of the drive-Wheels 7c is lan independent one, and that either wheel is adapted to accommodateits speed to the increased distance to be traversed in turning while one 0f said wheels is -either practically Stationary or' turning upon a.j lesser are of a circle. 4It* is evident, therefore, that according to the p0. sition and consequent direction of motion ot' the fore or guide wheels, which govern the corresponding position and direction of motion of thehind wheels to rotate the vehicle on one of said wheels, the other will. move correspondingly faster without thereby a'ecting the normal speed of the vehicle, except it be by slight frictional resistance.
In practicethe driving-shaft N is extended anonce under the boiler A and made of sncli a length as toserve as driving-shaft and in a mannersimilar to that just described for an auxiliary or 'second vehicle.
lVhen using thev above-described arrangenieiitof extended driving-shaft the tivo vehicles are coupled together by a hinged 'or a universal coupling, the drafting being thereby adapted to rotate independently of the shaft, which is provided with an extensionsleeve and also with a double system ot' ver- 'tically-superposed pivots, or what is called a Cardan joint or coupling. rlhe boiler, either of the Field or other suitable pattern with very high steam-space, is mounted upon the rear part of tlie'vehicle and attended by a machinist, while theconductor is seated upon the elevated seat B on the forward train of the vehicle, in proximity to the steering devices. The vehicle is adapted to run either upon ordinary roads, paved streets, or upon rails. and its forin and dimensions may be varied according to the work it is to perform. H avii g fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. In a' vehicle, the combination, with a' pair of wheels, each arranged to rotate around independent horizontal and vertical pivots, of a supporting spring or springs for the body, or part of the body, of saidvehicle, arranged to couple together the vertical pivots ot' the wheels, for the purposes specified. 2. The steering-gear liereinbefore described, consisting of t-lie forked lever f,`havin g toothed IOO scctorf, the connecting-rodse e', and the op- 3. The combination, with a pair of wheels arranged to rotate around independent horizontal and vertical axes, the latter being provided with lever-arms c', of the connect;-` ing-rods e e', having. toothed sector f, the pinion g, and the hollow rod G', carrying the hand-wlieel g', all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a vehicle, the combination ot' steering-gear and brake mechanism, operated and constructed as described, with the hollow rod G, its pinion g, and hand-wheel g', and the rod H, its pinion h, and hand-wheel It', as and for the purpose specified.

In a-steain-carriage, the fore wheels rotating upon independent horizontal and vertical axes, a spring-connection between said vertical axes, an engine supported by said sprlng-connectioii, and drive-Wheels Supporting the boiler for said engine, a single driving-shaft located centrally and in the plane 0f the wheel-axes, and operating to transmit the DOWer of the engine directly to said drivewhecls, all constructed and' operating s iilistai'itially as and for the purpose spccified'..`
