This invention appertains to baggage and more particularly to traveling bags, such as suitcases l and similar hand luggage.
Much diiiiculty is encountered by travelers in carrying heavy hand luggage to and from trains and the like, and due to the scarcity of porters at railroad terminals, women as well as men are subjected to this hardship. y l The weight of the ybag makes it necessary for the traveler to rest the bag on the ground from time to time while the bag is being carried, and the weight thereof pulls the traveler down on one side, creating an unsightly posture and this is particularly objectionable to women.
It is therefore one of the primary objects f my invention to provide means whereby hand luggage can be easily pulled along the station platform or the street similar to a childs wagon, whereby the travel will not be subjected to the direct weight and pull of the luggage.
Another salient object of my invention is the provision of a suitcase or similar hand bag with ball bearings or wheeled casters or slides on the lower face thereof for movement over the ground and a novel pull handle or strap on one end thereof, so that the bag can be conveniently and easily pulled alongside of the traveler.
A further object of my invention is to provide novel means for arranging the ball bearing or wheeled casters or slides on the lower face of the piece of hand luggage so that the piece of luggage will readily track alongside .of the person pulling the same.
A further important object of my invention is the provision of a pull handle hingedly connected to one end wall of the suitcase or bag movable against one wall of the bag when the same is not inuse and movable forwardly of the bag to an extended position when in use to permit the easy pulling of the bag or suitcase.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a pull handle embodying a pair of hingedly connected sections with the outer end of one section hingedly connected to one upper corner of the piece of luggage and the outer end of the other section having a hand grip, the arrangement being such that the handle can be readily moved to an extended position for facilitating the pulling of the case or to a flat collapsed position against one wall of the case when not in use, so as to be out of the way in the normal use of the case.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a novel pull strapconnected at one end to one end wall of the piece of luggage with means for detachably connecting the strap to the piece of hand luggage at spaced points out of the way when the strap is not being used.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, arrangement, and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view of a suitcase or similar piece of hand luggage showing one form of my novel pull handle connected therewith and swung to an extended position for facilitating the pulling of the bag or case along a station platform.
Figure 2'is an enlarged fragmentary, 'sectional view taken on the line 2-2 `of Figure 1 showing the handle in its collapsed out-of-the-way position against one end wall of the case.
Figure 3 is an enlarged, fragmentary, sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows showing a resilient detent or latch for holding the handle in its collapsed position against accidental swinging movement.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary, perspective view showing another form of my swinging handle for facilitating the pulling of the suitcase or other piece of hand luggage.
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing another form of my pull handle, said form consisting of a flexible pull strap.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein` similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter B generally indicates a traveling bag or similar piece of hand luggage and A one preferred form of my novel attachment therefor.
The traveling bag' B can be of any preferred character, size, or shape and will not be described in detail, but the same includes an end wall 5, a bottom wall 6 and a top wall l. The top wall 'l is provided with a carrying handle 8.
My novel attachment A for facilitating the transporting of the bag or other piece of hand luggage from point to point preferably embodies a pull handle I0.
This handle I0 includes inner and outer sections I I and I2 and can be formed from any desired material, such as, flat strap iron or steel suitably plated to enhance the appearance thereof. The meeting ends of the sections II and I2 are hingedly connected as at I3, for swinging movement. vThe outer end of the inner section II is hingedly connected as at I4, to
an attaching face plate I5. This plate I5 is secured` to the end wall 5 by means of rivets I6 or similar fastening elements.
As is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2, the attaching face plate I5 is preferably secured to the end wall 5 adjacent the upper end thereof.
The outer end of the section I2 of the pull handle I is provided with any preferred type of hand grip I'I.'
Normally, the handle I0 is collapsedflat against the end Wall .ofthe traveling bag B; as is clearly shown in Figure 2, and when the handle is in its collapsed position, the section `II lies flat against 1 j the outer face of the end wall 5 and the section I2 swings fiat against the section I-I.` To hold `ed to be folded flat against one end wall of the bag and over the top of the bag when the same is not in use. When the bag is to be pulled alongside of the traveler, the handle is pulled away from the spring'nger I8 and the handle is pulled up to'an extended position, as shown -in Figure 1. -As ,the handle is hingedly connected to one upper corner of the suitcase 0r other piece of hand luggage, the hand grip I'I can be conveniently disposed for graspingv by the traveler and obviously the handle can be swung up and down to suit varying conditions.
` In order that the suitcase or other piece of hand luggage can be conveniently pulled over a surface, the bottom wall 6 thereof is provided witl'iball bearing casters, Wheeled casters 'or'metal slides. I preferably provide ball bearing casters I9, as such type of casters do not take up much space and can be conveniently secured to -the lower wall of the suitcase'. By referring to Figures"1 and 5 it can be seen that these ball bearing casters are arranged in a novel way on the bottom wall 6y of the case. Thus at the transverse center of the bottom wall of the case two large casters I9 are utilized and the bottom wall adjacent to the' ends of the case are provided with relatively small ball bearing casters. These small ball bearing casters are arranged at the longitudinal center axis of the bottom wall of the Y ease. Byfthis arrangement, the bag can be easily pulled by the handle and the bag willI readily track alongside of the traveler.
` My invention can take different forms, and, as
shown in Figure 4, I can utilize a pull handle' 20 formed from a single rigid barof meta-1 or other material. In this instance, one end'of the pull handle is connected by a hinge 2-I to one'upper corn'erl of the bag or other piece of hand luggage. Inl use of this type of pull handle, the latch or snap fastener 23 is 'released and the handle is swung on its hinge 2l to a convenientY position to beY grasped `by the traveler so that the bagcan be easily pulled alongside of the traveler.
Thestrap is of such a length that the same caribe readily grasped by the hand of the traveler in a natural fashion without stocping down.
As is clearly shown in Figure 5, when the strap is Y*noi-.in use the same is folded over one end wall and the top wall of the piece of luggage, as heretobefore stated, and! the strap can be held down at' spaced pointsv nat' against the piece of hand luggage by the use of glove'rasteners or the like 21.
