M. WITKOWER BRASSIERE Filed Sept. 27, 1945' 131v (sun-ta:- ..Max WitkawEJ Patented Oct. 9, 1945 7, BnAssIEnn I Max Witkower, Los An ees,ca1i.
I justed for nursing and which retains its position on the body of the wearer and performsa maximum supporting function of both breasts at all times. I
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter from the following descriptions and drawing. Referring to the drawing, which is for illustrative purposes only:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view' of a brassiere embodying a form of my invention as same appears on the wearer; v a
Fig. 2 is a view of the brassiere shown in Fig. 1, laid out in a. flat position with one of the breast pockets opened for nursing; and
Fig. 3 is an inside view of a portion of the brassire shown in the preceding figures.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the
brassiere consists of two breast pockets generally indicated at 5. These breast pockets are each formed of two pieces of material, a front section or panel indicated at 6, connected to the side portion indicated at I by sewing along the medial line of the breast pocket as indicated at 8. The side portions 1 of the breast pockets which may be termed bands, extend around the side and back of the wearer and terminate in tabs indicated at H], which may bermade of webbing or elastic material, one of the tabs being provided with hooks indicated at I I, and the other with a series of eyelets indicated at l2, the eyelets being so arranged that an adjustmentof the brassiere to fit the body may be made by inserting the hooks in the proper eyelets.
[3 indicates the shoulder straps, the rear end of each being secured to the back of the brassiere by sewing or in any other suitable manner, as indicated at M. The front end of each shoulder strap I 3 is sewed or secured by any other suitable means to a ribbon or strip 9f material indicated at l6. One end of this ribbon is secured by sewing to the upper medial portion of the breast pocket and the other end is provided with an adjustment indicated at IT, and a loop indicated at l8, adapted to be engaged by hook IS on the Application-September 21, isla senaiNb. 503,921
upper end of: ai Vshaped central breast. supportin member or: panel indicated at. 22 on the :in-- side or the :breastpockets. This supporting merr her is :formed pfrftwopieces ozfrfa'bric indicated 'at :23 and 24,- "joined together on a medial line-ref the brassiere by sewing as indicated at 25. The upper ends of these two pieces, 23 and 24, extend upwardly and outwardly over the adjoining breast pocket, and the sides of the pieces 23 and 24 are stitched or otherwise secured to the lower part of the breast pocket along the medial line of same as indicated at 26.
The panel 22 is of substantial size and in fact completes the front section of the brassiere so that whether used normally or as a nursing brassiere, it performs the function of supporting the breasts by a direct lifting action. When used as a nursing brassiere the opening of the breast pockets does not. interfere with the function of the panel in performing its supporting function, in fact the opening of the pocket allows the breast to move outwardly from the body into normal nursing position.
The breast pockets are detachably secured along the medial line of the brassiere, one of the pockets being provided with a series of hooks,
indicated at 30, engageable in a series of eyes or eyelets 3! on the opposite breast pocket and when engaged the breast pockets assume the position shown in Fig. 1.
At the top of each breast pocket I is a loop 32 which engages a hook 33 on its associated shoulder strap. This connection, being on the medial line of the breast pocket, keeps the upper portion of the breast pocket stretched over the breast of the wearer. c
When it is desired to use the brassiere for nursing, the hooks 30 are detached from the eyes 3| and the side of the brassire desired to fully open is released by removing the loop 32 at the.
is-open, as just described, it is to be noted that the central or inner section 22 of the brassiere remains in place forming a full support for the breast as when the breast pockets are closed.
In this case it is understood that while the breast pockets assist in supporting the breasts, they are primarily in effect a covering for the breasts.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a brassiere: a pair of breast pockets narrowing at the sides to form bands; means for detachabl securing the ends of the bands tothe upper ends of the supporting member to the '1 other ends of said ribbons.
2. In a brassire: a pair of breast pockets narrowing at the sides to form bands; means fordetachably securing the ends of the bands together; means for detachably securing the breast pockets together along the medial line of the front of the brassire; a pair of shoulder straps having their back ends secured to the breast pocket bands; a ribbon secured intermediate its ends to the front end of each shoulder strap, one end of the ribbon being detachably secured to the upper portion of its associated breast pocket on the medial line of the pocket; a V-shaped breast supporting member terminating upwardly in two outwardly curved divergent ends terminating at sides at and attached by stitching to the lower portion of the breast pockets on the medial line of the breast pockets; means for detachably securing the upper ends of the supporting member to the other ends of said ribbons.
3. In a brassire having breast pockets detach- ;ably secured together and terminating at their sides in bands detaohably secured at the back of the brassiere; a V-shaped panel at the front of the brassiere having outwardly diverging lower portions secured to the respective lower outer portions of the breast pockets only along the medial line of the breast pockets; shoulder straps attached at the back of the brassiere to the said bands; a ribbon attached at one end to the brassire and connected intermediate its length to each shoulder strap at the front end of the straps; and means for adjustably attaching the other ends of the ribbons to the divergent upper ends of the V-s'haped panel. 7
