SHOULDER-PAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,066, dated. February 22, 1881,

Application filed December 27, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IsA'AO N. STERN,of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Flexible Shoulder-Pad, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved device for raising the shoulders of a coat or dress above the natural slope ofthe shoulders.

The invention consists in a hollow segmentshaped pad, made of some air-tight material, such as rubber or oiled silk, which pad is inflated and placed between the cloth ofthe coat and its lining at the joint of the sleeve and shoulder.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the manner of fastening my improved flexible shoulder-pad in a coat. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved shoulder-pad. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a cross'sectional elevation of my improved shoulder-pad and the .parts of the coat to which it is attached.

The shoulder-pad A, having a segmental or similar shape, is formed of two layers of some air-tight material, such as india-rubber, rub ber cloth, or oiled silk, which are united at the edges or a a to form the solid rim B, and a hollow or recess, 0, between the two layers--that is, in the inside of the pad. D, which may have a greater or less length, is fastened to the pad A, and by means of this tube D the pad is inflated more or less, as may be desired or necessary. This pad is fastened to a coat or cloak below the shoulder,'the solid rim B being attached to the lining of the coat or dress. 1

The pad may be shifted as may be desired, or as circumstances may require its location, but is preferably arranged transversely over the shoulder with its larger half on the rear side of the shoulders, as shown in Fig. 1. The pad may be inflated before or after being inserted, and the tube D is then plugged or tied up tightly.

This pad is light, has a very good shape, and, as it can be inflated more or less, its size can be varied conveniently. It also avoids the use of all wadding, batting, or other fibrous stuffing, which are more weighty and are apt to lose their shape in a short time.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The inflatable pad A, formed in segmental shape and with solid rim B, toadapt it to be arranged across the shoulder with its larger part resting on the rear side thereof, as shown and described.
