2 claims; (ci. icl- 211) This invention relatesto tobacco pipes and more particularly to pipes in which provision is made for cleaning and cooling the smoke before it passes into the smokers mouth.
An important object of the invention is to` provide a novel and advantageous pipe of the type referred to. Another object of the invention is to provide novel and `advantageousmeans` whereby the pipe bowl and the stem or barrel of the pipe may be readily assembled or takenA Yvention is to provide a novel form of pipe in which smoke drawn from the tobacco chamber of the bowl is passed into an elongated chamber in the stem or barrel and then is drawn from this barrel at a point to the Vvfront of the connection with the tobacco chamber and then rearwardly to the mouth piece.
Another.object of the invention is to provide a novel form of pipe comprising a bowl and a stem or barrel extending completely through the bowl, but connected at one side with the tobacco smoking chamber so that; the barrel can easily be cleaned without removing it from the bowl. A further object is to provide a novel pipe of the character described which is economical to manufacture, simple in construction and ecient in use.
According to a preferred form of the invention the bowl is formed with a tobacco chamber having an outlet at the center of the bottom thereof which communicates with an opening in the side of a barrel passed completely through the bowl beneath the tobacco chamber. The barrel and a mouth piece at one end thereof constitute the stem of the pipe. The end of the barrel extending through the lower pari; of the bowl, may be closed in any suitable way as by a plug fitted to the open end of the barrel. With this arrangement, it is evident that the smoke drawn into the barrel may be cooled therein while at the same time impurities may sink to the lower side of the barrel, and the cleansed and cooled smoke may be drawn through a smaller bore in the mouth piece into the mouth of the smoker. Such cleansing and cooling effects may be promcted by use of a tube extending longitudinally of the cooling and cleansing chambers in the barrel and of smaller diameter than the interior of the barrel. Said tube may t at one end:
into the inner end of the bore through the mouth piece and at itsother end may be supported in a suitable opening provided in the cap. This 4 tube may be provldedwith one or more inlets at such ai location thatl the smoke after being cooled and cleansed in the barrel proper will then .be drawn towards the plug end. of the barrelV and through said inlets into the tube through which it passes to the mouth piece. The tubemay be attached to the cap to facilitate removal of the tube. in the barrel.
Other objects,-features, and advantages willA appear upon consideration of the following detailed description and of the drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view taken along a plane through the axis of the pipe bowl and theaxis of the pipe stem;
Fig. 2 is a plan View partly broken away, ofVVV the structure shown in Fig. 1; n
Fig. 3 is a view partly broken away illustrating certain details of the structure shown in Figs. `1 and 2.
Fig. 4` is a top plan view of the inner tube shown in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a View of the structure in Fig. 3 as Viewed from the right.
Referring to the drawing, there is disclosed a pipe in which thev bowl I0 contains a tobacco chamber II terminating at a considerable distance above the lower end of the bowl b-ut is connected through a downwardly extending passage I2 with a hole I3 in the side of a barrel I4 forming part of a pipe stem passing directly through the lower part of the bowl and tting closely therein. This barrel is open at the end which extends through the lower part of the pipe bowl and the other end of the barrel is connected with a mouth piece I5 which may be integral therewith but preferably is a separate part. In use the open end of the barrel I4 remote from the mouth piece may be closed by suitable means such as a plug I6.
The pipe may be smoked without any further provisions for cooling and cleaning than those just described. Preferably, however, provision may be made of an interior pipe I I of smaller external diameter than the diameter of the cleansing and cooling chamber in the barrel I4. One end of said pipe I'I may be connected to the inner end of the bore I8 of the mouth-piece I5 and the other end of the pipe I1 is closed in use and extends into a. bore in the inner end of the plug I6. The pipe Il at a position farther Overheating may be prevented by vents:
from the mouth piece than the passage I2, that is, to the front of this passage, is provided with one or more openings I9 through which smoke from the barrel passes to the interior of the pipe and may be drawn through the mouth piece I5. This mouth piece may be open at its outer end in a usual manner. According, however, to the present invention, the outer end of the bore or passage I8 may also open into additional outlet passages, such as passages and 2| which may incline away from said passage I8 so as to distribute the smoke as it enters the mouth and thereby avoid concentration which might cause irritation in the mouth of the smoker.
The closing of the outer end of tube or pipe II may be effected by flattening the end of the pipe and use of additional sealing means if required. The ilattened end of the pipe may be convenient- 1y connected to the plug I6 by a pivot 22. Preferably such pivotal connection is rather loose to facilitate adjustment between the connected parts.
The specic structureof pipe shown in the drawing has many advantages some of which will now be discussed. The generally at bottom of the tobacco chamber I I makes it possible to have such chamber of substantial capacity without increasing the depth of the chamber. In the same way the at bottom of the pipe bowl enables the height of the bowl to be limited and at the same time enables the pipe or the bowl alone to remain upright when placed on a horizontal supporting surface. Furthermore, the passageof the hollow barrel or stem I4 completely through the lower part of the bowl not only enables a very strong connection between the parts but facilitates cleaning as well as assembly and taking apart.
Obviously a very close fit may be obtained by suitably tapering the barrel and the bore into which it is introduced.
Under certain conditions there may be a tendency for the barrel to become overheated. 'Ihis tendency may be overcome by providing one or more vents 23 in the barrel I4 near the bowl I0.
It should be understood that various changes may be made and certain parts may be used without others without departing from the true spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A pipe comprising a bowl having a. tobacco chamber and beneath said chamber a transverse bore extending completely through the bowl and connected with the tobacco chamber by a passage at the bottom of said chamber, a pipe stem comprising a mouth piece with a longitudinal bore, and a barrel with a longitudinal chamber connected to the bore of said mouth piece and open at its opposite end, said barrel tting in 4said bore in the bowl and having a side opening in direct communication with the passage at the bottom of the tobacco chamber, means including a plug to close the open end of said barrel. said plug having a recess at its inner end, and an inner tube in the barrel chamber having an open end connected to the inner end of the mouth piece bore and a closed end having one or more inlets to the front of the connection between the barrel chamber and the tobacco chamber, said closed end of said tube extending into said recess, and a pivot for supporting said closed end from said plug.' v
2. A pipe comprising a bowl having a tobacco chamber and beneath said chamber, a transverse bore extending completely through the bowl and connected with the tobacco chamber by a passage at the bottom of said chamber, a pipe stem comprising a mouth piece with a longitudinal bore and a barrel with a longitudinal chamber connected t0 the bore of said mouth piece and open at its opposite end, said barrel tting in saidV bore in the bowl and having a side opening in direct communication with the passage at the bottom of said tobacco chamber, a plug closing the open end of said barrel and having an axial recess at its inner end, and an inner tube in the barrel chamber having an open end connected to the inner end of the mouth piece bore and a.
