Description

UNrrEo STATES ATENT vOFFICE.
ORVILLE EWING, OF DEOATUR, ILLINOIS.
DEViCE FOR CATCHING AND HOLDING HOGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,675, dated December 21, 1880.
Application filed August 5,1880. (Nomaden.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ORVILLE EWING, acitizen of' the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Oatchin g and Holding Hogs, of which the following,` is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for catching hogs, in which a hollow cast-metal tube of peculiar construction operates in conjunction with a cord and wooden handle; and the oloject of my invention is to catch a hog by its nose and hold him fast during the act of ringing or branding. This object I accomplish by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the whole device is illustrated by a single ligure.
The main tube of the device is made from cast metal. It represents a hollow tube with open sides. One end ofthe tube is curved, as shown at A, so as to present its open end at an angle to one side of the tube, thus facilitating the operation of wringing. This curved part I prefer to construct bell-shaped. That part of the tube between the curved end A and handle G is formed of two bars7 O O, Vwith an opening, D, on both sides.
The handle G may be of any convenient form, and also provided with openings G, to decrease the weight.
Above the curved end A, near the union of the side bars, O O, is a concaved lug., B, with a hole, h, through its bottom, leading into the hollow part ot' the curved end of the tube.
Through this hole It one end of the cord E is passed, and a knot, x, formed on itsA end. This knot is drawn down into the concave of the lug B. The cord E passes through the hollow part of the curved end A, and is then returned through the same, and its other end is carried through the hollow part D and handle G of the tube and then made fast to the wooden handle H, ready for operation.
In operation, the handle G is grasped with one hand of the operator, and the handle H by the other hand. The loop F of the cord E is then placed over the nose of a hog, and by drawing the handle H the loopis drawn tightly over the hogs nose. The handle G may then be released and the hog held firmly by the `handle H during the act of placing a ring in his nose or branding him, the curved end A allowing the operator to work freely around the hogs nose.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a device for catching and holding hogs, the hollow metallic tubeI consisting of the curved mouth or end A, with concave lug B, side bars, C C, and the handle G, combined wit-h the cord E and movable handle H, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as shown and described. c
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ORVILLE EWING. Witnesses:
E. O. FRINK, GEORGE H. BENNETT.
