(C1. 229-52) This invention relates to a carton of fibrous board material simulating luggage, particularly adapted for the toy trade, or as a merchandise container having novelty or advertising value.

The purposes of the invention include so forming certain interfitting parts of the carton that it can readily be closed without the edges of adjacent overlapping panels interfering by comingl into edge abutment while nevertheless refrictional engagement of such parts against undue ease of opening, so disposing the parts that the carton can be readily set up without additional parts and without stitching or taping, and can be taken down or set up at will without destroying the assembly.
Other aims and purposes of, the invention will become apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the principles of this invention may be embodied in other and modified forms and proportions, only the preferred one of which is disclosed herein.

The carton is preferably formed of a one piece blank, Fig. 5, which folds to the shape of Fig. 1, with the part towards the observer in Fig. 1 (arbltrarily called the front), telescoping into the other part (arbitrarily called the back) The blank comprises panels defined for the most part by fold lines, dotted in Fig. 5, but in some instances set oif by full cuts, shown as solid lines of the blank comprise a back 2 with successive outer and inner fiaps 3 and 4 on each end, adapted to fold respectively updown towards the front panel, catching tongues 'I and 8 between them,
,thereby forming a conventional end assembly.
The tongues 'I are hinged to the ends of the bottom '-iv and the tongues 8 are hinged to the ends of the top flange 6. A bottom 5 and a top flange i B are bendably attached to said front, having ' end tongues 1 and 8 respectively bendably attached. A front IO slightly smaller than'the back 2, is bendably attached to the bottom 5 opposite the back; this front has end tabs ll and top flap |2 each bendably attached to its ends and'to its outerv edge as shown. When the various end and top attachments are appropriately folded at right angles to their respective main panels 2 and IO the result is two trays, hinged together at thebottom and capable of telescoping one into the other when the complete carton is given its final closing fold, as indicated in Fig. 1.
As best shown in Figs. 1 and 3 an integral handle, or more properly a handle half, |3 is bendably attached to the front top flap l2 longitudinally and preferably at the center, bendable outwardly, the half-handle being cut out from its base to form a grip. Similarly placed, another handle half Ill of like size and shape is bendably attached to the top fiange 6, .but the portion of this handle half which is cut outto form a grip, is left integrally attached along one edge to the top fiange 6, in the plane of the fiange, forming a center fastener 45 which is guid'ed beneath the top fiap 12 on closing, by its outer portion I 6, which is slightly bent downward near its end parallel to its base along fold line |1,
as best seen in Fig. 3.
It will be noted that the handle halves |3 and |4, when raised from the panels to which they belong, leave gaps which deflne end Sections of the top flange 6 and top flap 12 respectively. Such Sections are designated as under fastening sections |2A and upper fastenlng sections BA. Their relation is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, being that of interfacial frictional engagement. The outer terminal edges |8 of end tabs Il are given a back tilt, and are also somewhat inset, as at IS, from the fold line of the top flap l2, so as to allow the necessary inward displacement of fiap |2 on its fold line so that the elements 12A will enter under their corresponding elements 6A.
Thus, when the carton is closed, the ends 6A of the fiange 6 are above the flap l2, whereas the central part of 6, namely the fastener |5, is below IZ. Consequently there is a coacting twisting or warping tendency on each of the top flange elements, giving a much firmer friction holding effect between 6 and |2 than would be the case if all of 6 overlapped all of |2.
While we have herein shown and described a preciated that such disclosure is by way of illustration rather than limitation and that the invention is capable of being embodied in modifled arrangements, all within the scope of the appended claims. v
We claim:
1. A one piece fibre board container comprising a back tray composed of a back wall and top, bottom and end walls joined to the top, bottom and end edges of the back wall. said top and bottom walls having integral tabs and said end walls having inwardly folded fiaps interlocked with said tabs at the corners of the tray, a front tray comprislng a front wall hingedly connected at its bottom edge to the forward edge of the bottom wall of the back tray and fiaps integral with the side and top edges of the front wall and adapted to enter the back tray closely adjacent the end and top walls thereof, said end and top fiaps being unconnected and said end fiaps having their upper ends inset to permit the top fiap to have sufficient pivotal movement to enter beneath the top wall of the back tray without distortion of the end fiaps or front wall, said top wall and top fiap having registering slots centrally thereof and integral handle members at the inner ends of said slots adapted to engage face to face when the trays are telescoped, the slot of said top wall having parallel edges engageable with opposite ends of the handle carried by said fiap and said top wall having an integral tongue disposed centrally 'of its slot and .adapted to engage the under side of said flap beneath the handle portion to provide a frictional interlock between the fiap and top wall when the trays are fully telescoped.
2. A one piece fibre board container comprising a back tray composed of a back wall and top, bottom and end walls joined to the edges of the back wall, said top, bottom and end walls `ioined at the corners of the tray by means of tabs integral with the top and bottom walls. a front tray comprising a front wall hingedly connected at its bottom edge to the forward edge of the bottom wall of the back tray and fiaps integral with the side and top edges of the front wall and adapted to enter the back tray closely adjacent the end and top Walls thereof, said end and top fiaps being unconnected and said end fiaps having their upper ends inset to permit the top flap to have sufiicient pivotal movement to enter beneath the top wall of the back tray without distortion of the end fiaps or front wall, said top wall and top fiap having registering slots centrally thereof and integral handle members at the inner ends of said slots adapted to engage face to face when the trays are telescoped, the slot of said top wall having parallel edges engageable with opposite ends of the handle carried by said fiap and said top wall having an integral tongue disposed centrally of its slot and adapted to engage the under side of said flap beneath the handle .portion to provide a 'frictional interlock between the flap and top wall when the trays are fully telescoped, said tongue having a downturned leading edge adapted to guide said fiap into close frictional engagement with said top wall as the trays are telescoped.
