LEO H. WISE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
OVERALLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,512, dated November 16, 1880.
Application filed J rule 24, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEO H. W'IsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls; and-I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description or" the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in overalls or similar garments; and it consists of an extra piece of material stitched either upon the'outside or inside of the legs of the garment, and having such shape as to extend from the front center and crotch seam down and across the front of the leg, so as to entirely cover the knees, extending somewhat below them, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a view of the overalls with my re-enforce piece. Fig. 2 is an outline of the re-enforce. Fig. 3 is a view of the inside seam of a leg of the overalls.
The letter A designates the uppermost part of the re-enforce piece, which commences at or above the crotch, and is intended to give protection and durability to that portion of the garment where the legs are joined and upon which great strain occurs, and therefore is liable to start or to give way. The peculiar formation of this uppermost part permits of its being sewed into the crotch-seam of the garment, while the edge B is sewed in with the inside seam of the legs to a point below the knees.
O designates the upper edge of the menforce, which curves from the uppermost or crotch part, A, downward and outward across the leg to the edge D, which may be sewed in, if desired, with the outside seam of the leg.
The downward and outward curve of the upper edge avoids having the material of the garment of double thickness at the groin, at which point it would be disagreeable or uncomfortable to the wearer to have thick and stiff folds or creases. At the same time this formation removes the upper edge of the reenforce to a point so low as to avoid the bottom or lower end of the pockets, which further contributes to the comfort of the wearer.
(No model.)
Mechanics whose occupations require them frequently to stoop, to kneel on both knees, to rest on one knee and one foot, 850., subject their overalls to severe strain, by the fact that each bended knee draws the goods or material of the garment from the crotch, and each knee draws in a different direction, causing great strain, not only at the crotch-seam, but on the material in the line from the crotch to the knee.
The peculiar shape or outline of the menfore just below the uppermost or crotch part and between the edge 0, which curves downward and outward, and the edge B, which is sewed with the inside scam, gives to the garment the strength just where it is needed mostt.o wit, on a line direct from the crotch to the knee.
The length of the re-enforce may vary as judgment may dictate, but should extend below the knee.
When worn away or torn the entire re-enforce may be removed and the overall remain in good condition for further use.
The improvement is applicable to loons, overalls, and drawers.
I am aware that it is notnew to re-enforce the knee part of pantaloons' and overalls, and also that the crotchseam of such garments has heretofore been provided with a re-enforce piece for strengthening said parts. I do not therefore claim such, broadly, my claim relating to the device shown, which accomplishes something more-namely, strengthens the garment on the line from the crotch to the knee.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- Apair of overalls provided with a re-enforcing piece of the form substantially as described, having its uppermost part, A, attached to the crotch-seam of the garment, and an upper edge, (J, curving from said part A downward and outward across the leg, and the edges B and D connecting, respectively, at the inner and outside seam of the leg, as and for the purpose specified and shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEO H. WISE.
