ANATOMICAL SUPPORT Filed July 3, 1940 3maent r NORMAN DINE & ALLAN BLDUMBERG.

Application July 3, 1940, Serial No. 343,814
2 Claims. (Cl. 327) This invention relates to anatomical supports and more particularly to female body supports.
It is an object of the invention to provide a support useful in gynecological practice and more particularly for examination purposes, for the treatment of sterility, for post-operative treatment, etc.
The above object of the invention and other objects which might hereinafter appear will be fully understood from the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates the preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a support embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the support;
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the support I0 embodying the present invention is formed preferably as illustrated in the drawing and as here shown is approximately triangular in cross section. Said support comprises a case I2 of any suitable fabric preferably treated to impart moisture repellant properties thereto. Said case is filled with suitable padding material M which is firm and resilient and for this purpose said support is upholstered with kapok. The pad thus filled with this padding material is firm but comfortably soft and resilient and does not appreciably change in shape in use under the weight of the woman's body supported thereby.
Referring more particularly to the contour of the support of the present invention, it will be observed that the thickness thereof increases from the rear to the front thereof whereby said support is inclined upwardly from the rear end Hi to the front wall thereof, the vertical surface of the latter being substantially deeper than the former. it being understood that in use the support is positioned so as to raisethe pelvis when the thinner end of the support is toward the shoulders of the body. Also it will be observed that the bottom 20 and the top 22 have concave depressions 24 and 25, respectively, the lower concavity becoming substantially fiat and the upper concavity becoming deeper under the weight of the body, but without substantial displacement of the filling material in the casing. The forward part of said support has lateral Winglike portions 26 disposed at opposite sides of an intermediate concavity or front re-entrant portion 28 formed in the front l8 of said support. Said lateral wing-portions 26 provide lateral support for the buttocks while the concave portion 28 allows placing the genitalia in an operative position without loss of support. The side walls 30 of the support are preferably flat and are provided with handles 32. It will be noted that the top and bottom of the case and the intermediate filling material are held in fixed relation by the upholstering 0r tufting thread 34. Further, it will be observed that upper and lower ridges 36 and 38. respectively, extending along the front and sides of the support are formed by stitching 40 and 42 passing through the casing and the filling adjacent the front and side edges of the support. Also, lines of stitching 44 are passed through the front wall 28 and adjacent portions of the filling t maintain said front wall of the casing in fiat non-wrinkling form.
In the use of the support in gynecological practice, for example, in the examining room for routine gynecological examination and treatment, said support is of substantial assistance in providing the correct elevated position with comfort to the patient and relaxation during examination. Said support is of special advantage in the treatment of sterility, particularly in cases where the vaginal fornices are shallow and the patient is directed to elevate her hips during coitus and to remain in that position for several hours thereafter. Also in post-operative treatment the support is of substantial utility in cases where elevation of the pelvis is required.
Thus it is seen that the support embodying the present invention is well adapted to accomplish the primary and other objects thereof. It will be understood, however, that, while we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention certain changes in the details of construction of said embodiment may be made and the invention may be embodied otherwise than herein specifically shown or described. Accordingly, we do not wish to be limited to the invention as herein specifically shown or described except to the extent which may be required by the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A body support of the character described comprising a pad of increasing thickness from the rear to the front whereby the top surface of said pad is upwardly inclined toward the front thereof, said pad having a front wall which is substantially deeper than the rear edge of the pad, the front edge of said top surface having a central concave portion and said front wall having its central portion inwardly curved or concave and defined at its top by said central concave edge portion of said top surface, the top of said pad having a concave depression formed therein, said pad being sufliciently firm to resist substantial change in shape by the weight of the part of the body supported thereby.
2. A body support of the character described comprising a pad of increasing thickness from the rear to the front whereby the top surface of said pad is upwardly inclined toward the front thereof, said pad having a front wall which is substantially deeper than the rear edge of the pad, the front edge of said top surface having a central concave portion and said front wall having its central portion inwardly curved or concave and defined at its top by said central concave edge portion of said top surface, the top of said pad having a concave depression formed therein, the forward part of said pad having lateral portions of substantial width projecting forwardly of the central concave portion of said front wall to provide lateral support for the buttocks when the back of the body is on the support with the genitalia positioned adjacent said concave edge, said pad being sufllciently firm to resist substantial change in shape by the weight of the part of the body supported thereby.
