UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM N. WOLF, ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
MlDDLlNGS-SEPARATORf SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,597, dated July 27, 1880.
Application filed January 6, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
' Allentown, in the the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have inventeda new and valuable improvement in Middlings-Separators; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there- Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical central section of my improved separator. Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sections of the same. Fig. 4 is an end View thereof.
This invention has relation to middlingsseparators; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates the frame, which is usually of ordinary rectangular form, having removable sides and ends, held by buttons or other securing means. 1 v
A represents the fan-case, and B the fan shaft, havinga pulley-connection, b. The fanbox is double, to accommodate a blower-fan, B, and a suction-fan, O, the former discharging into a blast-box, D, at the lower portion of one end of the machine, Upon the fanshaft, near the sides of the frame, are the eccentrics or cams a, which engage with the ends of the upper arms, 0, of the angle-levers D, said arms being provided with anti'friction rollers. These angle-levers D are pivoted to the frame, the location of the journals being between the shakers, as shown. By means of upper extensions, c,'they are connected with the upper shaker, and to the lower shaker by the lower arms, 0
E designates the upper shaker, having a movable screen or cloth, 6. The inclination of this box is slightly downward from that end of the frame in which the fan is located, and is sufficient to allow the contents to be readily moved by the motion of the shakerbox toward its discharging end, that portion upon the screen passing over and down through angular passages e to the shaker below, and
that portion in the box of the shaker passing out through the discharge-spout f. Springarms D serve as hangers for the shaker-box, and to give it a quick backward movement, whereby the forward movement of the contents is -accelerated.
E represents the lower shaker, also hung from spring-arms D and provided with a removable screen, 0, as shown. This shaker is inclined in the opposite direction from that of the upper shaker, to allow the contents to gravitate toward the blower end of the machine.
The shaker-boxes are made in cross-section, somewhat angular in form, their sides being curved and shelving towardthe lower central portion, which is flat, extending longitudinally from end to end. The bottom of the lower shaker is provided with an under dischargetrough, f, into which its contents are passed through apertures g, governed by valves g. The lower shaker receives that portion of the contents of the upper shaker which passes over its screen through the angular passages e Upon the fan-shaft is formed a worm-thread, h, which engages with a gear-wheel, To, carrying an eccentrically-pivoted link, 1, which is connected to the outer end of an arm, 6, fastened to the journal of a horizontal blast-pipe, m, which extends through the lower shaker under its screen, and is journaled at the other end, so as to have a vibratory motion as the gear-wheel 7c is turned by the worm h. Parallel with this blast-pipe and on each side of it is a similar blast-pipe, m, also journaled at each end, the three journals of said pipes at one end of the machine carrying pulleys p, which engage with a belt, a, in the manner shown, thereby, when the central pipe is vibrated, giving a similar motion to the side pipes. These pipes extend into the blast-box D, and have openings 2 to receive the blast from the blast chamber and discharge it through longitudinal slots or crevices 1" along their upper surfaces, so that the blast is directed toward the under side of the lower screen, and has a lateral to'and-fro action thereon, keeping the cloth from clogging and blowing out the light fuzzy stuif, which is carried off by the action of the suction-fan.
, L represents a shaft in the upper shaker,
having rocking bearings s and grip-leathers I, connected to said rocking bearings and to transverse slides a, moving on slotted ways 10 at each end of the shaker under the screen. To these slides a are attached longitudinal cords c, which serve, when moved transversely by the means indicated, to clear the under surface of the upper screen. One of these slideways w is made movable, being attached to a longitudinal slide, 20, having a handle, H, so that the cords may be slackened or tightened at will, or, by a quick pull, may be thrown upward against the under side of the screen-cloth. The rock-shaft L has upon its journal end a pulley, p, which is operated by the belt a to give said shaft a vibratory mo tion.
I am aware that shakers having opposite reciprocating movements and that oscillating blast-pipes having spaced air-exits are not new, and I do not claim such devices, broadly.
Having described this invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with the case A, having at one end a blast-chamber, D, and a blower, B, discharging into said chamber, of the oscillating pipes m, having longitudinal blast-slots under the lower screen, said pipes extending by one end into the blast-chamber, and l'lavingz; inlets z therein, and being provided at their other ends with pulleys p, the whipper-shaft L, its pulley p, and the endless belt a, passing over the pulleys p p, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the rock-shaft L, having the rocking bearings s and grip-leathers t, of the transverse slideways w, slides a, and clearing-cords 11, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
