Description
0. N. BRAINERD. Box Fastener.
No. 229,857. I Patented July 13, I880.
JZZZesZ: In ve'nzor.
. therein to UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORRIN N. BRAINERD, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BOX-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,857, dated July 13, 1880.
Application filed October 31, 1879.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, .ORRIN N. BRAINERD, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Egg-Carriers, of which the and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to the means of attaching the cover on an egg box or case so that it will be firmly held in place and be capable of ready removal when desired. My improvement consists in attaching cleats to the ends of the lid and to the ends of the box, the latter having rectangular notches receive a headed pin at one end of the lid and a crank-formed catch upon the other end, as will be more fully described hereinaftvr.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the lid elevated above the box, with part broken 'awayto show the crankformed catch. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the lid and upper part of the box.
A is the box. This is made in -the usual 'Way, with two compartments, a a, or otherwlse.
' B is the lid or cover, having cleats or slats b b attached to its ends. To the slat or cleat b is attached a headed 'pin, U. The pin is preferably made with simply a round head, 0, flat upon the upper side, which engages under the cleat'D attached to the end of the box A,
1 the pin-shank entering the groove 61 in the such a way that cleat. The catch 0 may, however, be made of any desired shape or form that will have a like engagement with the cleat D. V
The catch 0 is attached to the cleat b in it may be turned to the right or left when the lid is to be secured to or taken from the box. v
The cleat D (which is attached to the opposite end of the box from that D) has a corresponding groove or slot, 01, to receive the shank of the catch or button 0,
In putting the lid on, the pin or catch 0 is first made to engage in the notch or groove d catch 1) is then turned one-fourth around, en-
of the cleat D or D, the catch 0 being in the position shown in Fig 2. The lid may be put on either way. The lid is then brought in contact with the box, the shank of the button or catch (3 entering its groove 01. The
gaging beneath the slat D or D, as the case may be. The pinO'is firmly fixed in the end 'projectin g above cleat, b, of the lid, and the catch 0 is secured in its cleat b so as to turn therein, being held therein by a head, 0.
In place of making the catch 0 to simply turn in the cleat, it may be made to screw therein; but I prefer the former arrangement.
The advantage of this improvement in the Way'of attaching the cover over those now in use is that the case will stand much more knocking around and rough handling without the cover being torn off by the slats or cleats splitting or from other causes; also, the lid may be put on the box either way.
A catch, 0, may take the place of the headed pin 0, so that there will be a catch, 0, at both ends of the lid.
I am aware that it is not new to construct boxes with fastenings composed of a wire or rod secured at the lower end to the box and adapted to engage with the lid-of the box and lock it in position. Such, however, I do not claim, as in all such devices with which I am acquainted the locking-pin is secured at its lower end to the end of the box, its upper end the top of the box, and when the lid is removed such projection of the locking-pin would be very objectionable. As it would be in the wa* of passers-by, it would be liable to become knocked off or bent, and thus lose it usefulness. By my arrangement, however, there is not the same danger of the locking-pin becoming useless or injuring the clothing or person of passers-by, because the upper end of the pin is secured to the under side of the lid and is removed entirely out of the way on the removal of the lid. Another diflerenee is that I lock the box by the engagement of the pin with a cleat upon the end or ends of the box, while in the devices with which I am acquainted the locking is effected by a pin projecting upward from the box itself and engaging with the lid.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The box-fastening constructed as herein-described, consisting of rotatable downwardlyprojecting L-shaped wire or wires 0 G, engaging under a cleat or cleats, D D, notched or slotted from .top to bottom to receive the said rotatable wires or hooks, as and for the purpose set forth. I
ORRIN N. BRAINERD.
