UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAURIN L. KING, OF CHICAGO, .ILLINOIS.
NECKLACE-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,257, dated June 29, 1880.
Application filed April 20, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURIN L. KING, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N ecklace-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object the production of a necklace-fastening which shall securely hold the ends of the necklace when in use, and shall at the same time present an attractive appearance; and it consists in a folding clasp, one part of which carries the hooks whereby the necklace is held, and the other part serves to close the hooks, so that when the parts are brought together the necklace cannot be detached.
This description will be more fully under-- stood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view of the fastening and necklace when in use. Fig. 2is aperspective view of the fastening open. Fig. 3 is a central section through the fastening when closed.
In said drawings, A represents the neck- The latter is composed of two parts or leaves, 0 G, hinged together at c, and kept closed oneupon the other by a spring, d, secured to one part, and a projection, 01, upon the other.
Part 0 is constructed with a raised rim having slots e to admit the hooks E, which are attached to the other half of the clasp. The slots 0 are only wide enough to admit the hooks freely.
(No model.)
The spring dis of such strength that it retains the leaves in the closed position with sufficient firmness to withstand the ordinary strains. It will also hold the leaves in the open position shown in Fig. 3, the projection d acting in conjunction therewith in the performance of this duty also.
The lip m is for convenience in unclasping the device, and the hook 0 may be employed, if desired, for the attachment of a locket, 0. Its opening is also within the clasp, so as to prevent detaching of the locket when the clasp is closed.
This device is not only economical, but may be made very ornamental, as it affords a surface excellently adapted for monograms or other fancy designs.
I claim A necklace-fastenin g consisting of the springclosed hinged leaves, one of which carries the hooks, and the other of which is provided with a raised rim, slotted to receive and inclose the open ends of the hooks, thereby preventing the detaching of the necklace, substantially as specified.
LAURIN L. KING.
