FRUIT-JAR LIFTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,865, dated June 15, 1880,

To all whom z'tmay concern:

Be it known that l, ELIZA ALICE CASE, of WVilliamstown, in the county of ()swego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Implement for Handling Fruit-Jars in Boiling WVater; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same,

reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

The drawing is a representation of a perspective of my device for handling fruit-jars in boiling water.

My invention relates to a device for handling fruit-jars in boiling water; and it consists in a pair of tongs provided with bent ends for the jar to rest'on, and semicircular hoops adapted to embrace the sides of thejar, these half-hoops being, if desired, provided with leatherfacings, all as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

In the drawing, A A designate the tonghandles, and B B the jaws, which are spread apart near the pivot b of the tongs, so that they will readily straddle a fruit-jar.

O (l are semicircular hoops secured to the jaws; and, when preferred, leather strips 01 may be riveted to these half-hoops, so that when the jaw is clamped the leather will form elastic cushions, which bear upon the jar. The ends of the jaws are bent as at B B, so that the bottom of the jar will rest thereon.

By this means a fruit-jar may be dipped into boiling water and then removed without danger of scalding the fingers of the operator, since the tongs will be grasped by the handle ends during such manipulation.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an implement for handling fruit-jars in boiling water, the herein-described tongs composed of jaws and handles, the jaws being bent at their ends and being also provided with semicircular hoops, either with or without leather facings, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
