UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH D. HOBBS, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
DRIVING-GEAR FOR SIEVES, GRAlN-Rl DDLES, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,758, dated June 15, 1880.
Application filed February 10, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH D. HOBBS, of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Driving-Gearing for Sieves, Grain-Riddles, and Feeders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to driving-gearing for sieves, grain-riddles, and feeding machinery in general.
Heretofore the driving machinery for sieves, grain-riddles, and for feeders has been simply of the pitmau motion with the common wheel or the wheel and crank in combination; but these motions are objectionable, since the motion obtained is not capable of regulating in its rapidity without causing the whole machinery connected therewith to be likewise regulated, either faster or slower, as the case may be. Then it is further objectionable in that the shock or kick is always the same-the same jerk. It is further objectionable in the case of feeders, since the motion and movement is always directly back and forth, shoving the pitman straight backward and forward, and always reaching the same distance.
The object of my invention is to provide a system of driving-gearingfor sieves, grain-riddles, and for feeding machinery, which may be regulated in its rapidity or motion, regulated in its shocks or jerks, and the movement of the pitman changed to suit the motion desired and all this can be done without a change or alteration in the propelling machinery, and to further provide a long or short stroke of the pitman by bolt adjustment. I attain this object by mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front view. Fig. 2 rep resents a side view, and Fig. 3 represents the different forms of levers and boxing.
The invention consists in a wheel, A, with arms B B B, 850., extending from the rim alternately on opposite sides, with square or curved base, according to the motion required. The wheel A revolves on an ordinary hub. The yoke D, with its pivots or gudgeons O O, is supported by an upright circular post which fits in the pipe-boxing E. This boxing is flanged at the top, which makes the washer between the yoke D and the wood-work supporting the pipe-boxing. The post in the boxing E passes on through the square F in the crank H, which post is then held to its place by a burr at the bottom.
The crank H is slotted at the point G, where the bolt L is inserted. The loose connectingbars J J J have a slot, P, at the point where the bolt L passes through it, and straight or curved slot S, according to the motion desired, through which the pipe-boxing F passes.
The operation of the device is as follows: Remove the not from the bottom of the post in the boxing E take off the crank H and the nut of bolt L. Then put J J J according to the motion desired, with the slot S over the boxing F and the slot P over the bolt L. Then put the bar on L and the bottom of the post in E. Attach the crank or belt, as the case may be, to the hub of the wheel A, and set it in motion. This turning forces the arms B B, &c., alternately against the pivots O U, which vibrate correspondingly. This sets the yoke D in motion, which moves the crank H. The bolt L, being adjusted to H in the slot G, moves with it. It also, being on the slot P of the bar J, moves the bar in correspondence with the crank H. This throwing of the bar J back and forth moves the slot S of said bar along the boxing E. The motion thus given to the bar J will be according to the slope or shape of the slot S. The slot S gives direction to the bar J, which is attached to the machinery or sieve to be operated, and according to the bar used such will be the motion regulated by the slot S. The slot P in the bar J is for regulating the length of the stroke. The farther the bolt L is from the boxing E in the slot P the longer will be the stroke given to the bar J. The nearer the bolt is the shorter will be the stroke.
The movement procured by putting J into the gearing will be a simple side movement; by inserting J a double movement, and J a circular motion.
What I claim is A device for converting rotary into reciprocating motion, consisting of the wheel A, yoke D, and pivots and crank H, and either of the double-slotted connecting-bars J, J, or J substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH D. HOBBS.
