BELT TIGHTENER AND REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,382, dated May 11, 1880.
Application filed November 17, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK PAQUET, of East Brighton, Essex county, Vermont, have invented a certain new and Improved Belt Tightener and Regulator and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which--.
Figure 1 represents my invention as applied to a perpendicularly-moving belt, or one which passes over pulleys substantially in the same vertical plane. Fig. 2 is a top-plan view of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1. Figs 3 and at represent modified forms of the invention, showing its application to a horizontallymoving belt.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures denote the same parts. My invention has for its object to provide improved means for tightening and regulating driving-belts, so that they will, under all circumstances, run smoothly and uniformly, and without slipping upon their pulleys and to this end it consists in the several novel devices and combinations of devices which I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawings, A and B represent a driving-pulley and a'driven pulley, respectively, 0 arranged upon shafts A B, that are in substantially the same vertical plane, and-O is a belt by which the motion of the one pulley is communicated to the other.
0 c are hangers pivoted to the frame-work 3 5 c, and g is a frame hinged to said hangers at d and carrying a weight, 1', at its outer end, and having arms h h, that form the bearings for a pulley, a. This pulley a bears at all times upon the outside of the belt 0 with a 40 yielding pressure, and takes up the slack in said belt, and keeps it under the requisite tension to prevent slipping on the pulleys A B.
The position of the hangers is changed by means of arms I), articulated to their lower 5 ends, which arms are secured to the framework by set-screws 8, working in slots b, as shown. The adjustment of the hangers back and forth causes the pulley ato bear upon the belt at the proper point and with more or less force.
The arms h h are connected to the frame 9 by means of regulating-rods e e and nuts 1' 7'.
By adjusting one or both of said arms out or in on the said regulating-rods the pulley a can be inclined more or less to the face of the belt, and the latter thus caused to travel on any portion of the pulleys A B desired.
Figs. 3 and 4 show the invention modified and adapted to a horizontally-moving belt.
In this modification the arms K, which support the friction pulley a, are articulated .to hangers l l.
The frame carrying the weight is fulcrumed atm, and its inner end is connected to the arms is near the pulley by rods a. The hangers can be adjusted back and forth by means of adjustable slotted arms I), articulated thereto, as shown.
By adjusting the slotted arms together the pulley can be made to bear with greater or less force upon the belt, and by adjusting one of said arms more than the other the pulley can be inclined more or less to the face of the belt, so as to cause the latter to travel on any desired part of its supporting-pulleys, as will be apparent.
It will be observed that in both forms of the invention the pulley bears against the belt with a yielding pressure, which pressure can be regulated, and that means are provided for presenting the pulley to the face of the belt at a greater or less angle. The weight itself in each case is adapted to be removed, and a lighter or heavier substituted in its stead, if desired.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the pivoted brackets 0, weighted frame g, arms 11., and pulley a with the adjustable slotted arms I), substantially as described.
2. The combination of the hinged and weighted frame, the arms carryingthe friction-pulley, and the regulating-rods e e,provided with adj usting-nuts, substantially as described, for the purpose specified. 5
3. The combination of the brackets c, hinged and weighted frame g, arms h, pulley a, regulating-rods c, and the adjustable slotted arms I), all arranged substantially as described.
