POCKET-BOOK FRAME.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters, Patent No. 227,258, dated May 4, 1880.

Application filed January 3, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GABRIEL JASMAGY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames for Pocket- Books, of which the following is a specification.

The frames for pocket-books, satchels, &c., have heretofore been made of three separate pieces-viz., two jaws and a guard-piece mounted above one of the jaws. The guardpiece and jaw have been riveted together in suitable manner, so as to form one connected whole, which is jointed by pivots to the other jaw of the frame. The guard-piece serves to make the connection with the other jaw by suitable lockin g devices.

The object of this invention is to furnish a pocket-book frame in which one of the jaws and its guard-piece are made in one continuous piece of sheet metal, instead of in two pieces, as heretofore, so that a considerable saving in material, as well as in the time and labor for making them, results therefrom.

The invention consists of a pocket-book or other frame the guard-piece of which is bent in one continuous piece with one of the jaws from a blank of rectangular shape having a longitudinal slot, corner notches, and perforated ears at the ends.

Referring to the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent top views of the blanks used for making my improved pocket-book frame; Fig. 3, a bottom View of the jaw and guard-piece as bent into shape from the blank before forming the corners; and Figs. 4 and 5 are, respect ively, bottom and side views of the combined jaw and guard, shown in finished state.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A represents the blank from which the combined jaw and guard-piece of my improved pocketbook or other frame is made. This blank is cut of the proper size and thickness required by the size of the pocket book, satchel, &c., for which it is to be used. It is made of oblong shape, and providedat the ends with projecting and perforated ears a a. The blank A is out with a longitudinal slot or opening, I), by which it is divided into a wider portion, d, and a narrower portion, 0. This slot may be made either of oblong shape, leaving narrow connecting-pieces f, as shown in Fig. l, or of less length, but with triangular end portions, 1), as shown in Fig. 2.

The blank with the longer slot is preferably used when sheet metal of greater thickness is employed, as in this case the connecting ton gue-pieces f are of sufficient strength, while the second form of slot is used when lighter material is employed, as in this case the required strength of the connecting-pieces f is obtained by their greater length, they extending up to the corners of the frame when bent into final shape.

The wider portion d of the blank serves to form the jaw B, while the narrower portion forms the guard-piece O. The wider portion at is, furthermore, notched at both sides of its center portion, at the points where the corners of the jaw are finally formed, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. The blank A, after being so slotted and notched, is then bent up by suitable dies, the wider portion at being first bent into U shape along the dotted lines, and then adjusted by bending the connectingpieces in position at right angles to the narrower strip 6, which forms the guard-piece (l, as'shown in Fig. 3. This brings the guardpiece over the jaw, so that by bending the ends at right angles to the middle portion the notched portions of the jaw -blank form the corners of the jaw. This bending imparts the final shape to the combined jaw and guardframe, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The other jaw is then pivoted to the ears of the combined jaw and guard-piece, and the frame is ready to receive the fabric from which the pocket-book, satchel, &c., is to be made.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a frame for pocket-books and other analogous articles, a combined jaw and guard piece of a single piece of metal connected at the ends only, substantially as shown and de scribed.

2. In a pocket-book frame, an exterior guard or shield piece extending over the jaw and being connected thereto at the ends only by short side pieces or tongues, substantially as set forth.
