This invention relates to printing mechanism` of the class having a flexible holder or galley adapted to be laid flat when vremoved from the supporting element of the press and lto be bent to an arc vconforming with the periphery of a cylindrical supporting segment, the device being an improvement upon -the mechanisms described in my Patent No. 2,025,307, granted December 24, 1935, and No. 2,045,408, granted June 23, 1936, and in .my :zo-pending application for patent on Printing mechanism, Serial No. 266,318, led April 6, 1939.
1t is `an object of the present invention to pro-` vide novel means for quickly and easily consolidating and compressing individual line members transversely, said members and compressing means being movable longitudinally of a flexible holder or galley.
A particular object is to provide in mechanism of this class a `flexible holder or 'galley having parallel flanges for engaging the ends of the line members and a multiplicity of perforations alors the bend of. each of such flanges for eneasement with follower bars whereby the line members may be Compressed` quickly and easily and held in properly fixed position for high grade printing.
Another object is to provide, in mechanism having a exible form holder and individual line members, a follower bar for consolidating the line members Iand means on the bar for positively engaging the form holder and for resiliently consolidating the line members on the holder.
Other objects will appear and be more fully pointed out in the following specication and claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a plan view o f my improved form holder, laid nat, with a number of line members mounted thereon and showing my improved follower bars partially in plan View and partially in horizontal section;
Fig. 2 is a cross section on a somewhat enlarged scale taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged,l fragmentary, longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, the numeral 4 indicates a fleX ible form holder or galley constructed 'from thin sheet material. The side edges of this holder are parallel to each other vand each has'a flange 5 bent inwardly to slidably engage individual line members 6. The ends of these members 6 are formed with recesses 'I to receive the flanges 5 respectively. A multiplicity of small perforations B are formed in the holder 4 at the bend of each flange 5, these perforations being spaced at regular intervals to receive pointed ends v9 on the follower bars I0. Each of the ends 9 of each bar I0 is integral with a Vmovable head II mounted on a small rod I2 which is slidable in a longitudinal bore in the bar and pressed outward by a small compression spring I3 confined in the bore. Each bar has a pair of longitudinally elongated slots I4 at its outer side to guide manually operable pins I5 and I6 which are fixed at their inner vends respectivelyin the rods I2. The pins I5 and I6 for each follower bar I0 may be pressed toward each other to withdraw the ends 9 from engagement with the perforations 8 in the flanges 5.
A leaf spring VI is fastened to each of the -bars i@ to resiliently engage the adjacent- .line holder 5, each of these springs II engaging a line holder near both ends of the latter. A pair of thrust screws IB are also threaded in each of the follower bars Mito limit backward movement of the springs I and topositively compress the line holders in the form in cases where such compression is required. Individual type 20 are indi--l cated in the line holder B shown in Fig. 2 and a fewof such type areshownj in one of the line holders in Fig. 1.
In use the individual type 2i! are -com-posed in the line holders 6 while the latter are removed from the form holder 4 and then the line holders are assembled on the form holder with the flanges 5 of the latter in engagement with the ends of the line holders in recesses 1. It will be understood that at least one of the follower bars I0 is removed from the form holder while the line holders are placed in engagement with the form holder and when the composition of the entire galley has been completed the follower bar I0 is replaced and secured with the ends 9 in opposite perforations 8 in the form holder.
During the adjustment ofthe follower bars away from the line holders the pins I 5 and IE are pressed toward each other to compress .the spring I3 and retract the ends 9 SQ that they pass freely between the flanges 5. With the spring I3 released the follower barV may be moved toward the line holders until the springs I'I are 'compressed to the desired degree or until the ends of the screws I8 strike the line holders to `compress them. n During this compression movement the spring I3 allows the pointed ends 9 to Vadvance from one perforation 8 to another by a ratchet-like movement. This movement of the follower bars is facilitated by the formation of a bevel on the front face of each end 9, as shown in Fig. 1. With both bars I0 in place and the springs I1 under compression, the form holder is ready to be mounted on the arcuate segment of the press. In most cases no further compression of the individual line members on the form by operation of the screws I8 is necessary. The form holder may be attached to the segment by mechanism such as that described in my Patent No. 2,045,408, or other suitable means.
The springs I'l are not essential although for some classes of work they may be caused to exert suiicient lateral pressure on the assembled line holders to automatically consolidate the lines when the flexible holder is bent from fiat to arcuate position on the segment. Where higher compression is desirable the bars I are forcibly advanced toward each other or the thrust screws I8 may be tightened after the form holder is in place on the segment to positively compress the line holders together between the follower bars. When the form is to be unlocked, either after detachment from the segment or While in place thereon, the pins I and I6 are actuated to withdraw the pointed ends 9 from engagement with the perforations 8 in the holder 4.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. Printing mechanism having in combination a flexible form holder having a plate portion adapted to be mounted on the periphery of an arcuate segment and to be laid at when removed therefrom, a multiplicity of individual line members extending in parallel relation to each other on said form holder, parallel anges in* wardly bent from opposed edges of said plate portion, said flanges slidably engaging the ends of and retaining said line members, a multiplicity of perforations along the bend of each of said anges, a follower bar extending substantially parallel to said line members on the form holder and toothed means on said follower bar adapted to removably engage said form holder in said perforations for consolidating said line members thereon.
2. Printing mechanism having in combination a flexible form holder having a plate portion adapted to be mounted on the periphery of an arcuate segment and to be laid iiat when removed therefrom, a multiplicity of individual line members extending in parallel relation to each other on said form holder, parallel flanges inwardly bent from opposed edgesof said plate portions, said flanges slidably engaging the ends of and retaining said line members, a multiplicity of perforations being formed along the bend of each of said fianges, follower bars extending substantially parallel to said line members at opposite sides of said line members on said holder, toothed means on said follower bars adapted to removably engage said form holder in said perforations to consolidate said line members between the follower bars, said toothed means at one end of each follower bar being spring-pressed to project into engagement with the perforations and means for manually retracting said toothed means from engagement with said perforations.

Printing mechanism having in combination a flexible form holder having a plate portion adapted to be mounted on the periphery of an arcuate segment and to be laid flat when removed therefrom, a multiplicity of individual line members extending in parallel relation to each other on said form holder, parallel flanges inwardly bent from opposed edges of said plate portion, said flanges slidably engaging the ends of and retaining said line members, a multiplicity of recessed seats along the bend of each of said anges, a follower bar extending substantially parallel to said line members on the form holder, and projections on said follower bar adaptedto removably engage said form holder in said recessed seats for consolidating said line members thereon.

Printing mechanism having in combination a iiexible form holder having a plate portion adapted to be mounted on the periphery of an arcuate segment and to be laid flat when removed therefrom, a multiplicity of individual line members extending in parallel relation to each other on said form holder, parallel anges inwardly bent from opposed edges of said plate portion, said anges slidably engaging the ends of and retaining said line members, a series of opposed stop members along the bend of each of said flanges, and a follower bar extending substantially parallel to said line members on the form holder and engaging opposed stop members for consolidating said line members on the form holder.

Printing mechanism having in combination a iiexible form holder having a plate portion adapted to be mounted on the periphery of an arcuate segment and to be laid flat when removed therefrom, a multiplicity of individual line members extending in parallel relation to each other on said form holder, parallel flanges inwardly bent from opposed edges of said plate portion, said flanges slidably engaging the ends of and retaining said line members, a series of opposed stop members along the bend of each of said flanges, a follower bar extending substantially parallel to said line members on the form holder and engaging opposed stop members fol consolidating said line members on the form holder, and means carried by said follower bar and interposed between said follower bar and line members to compress the line members and retain them in consolidated relation.

Printing mechanism having in combination a flexible form holder having a plate portion adapted to be mounted on the periphery of an arcuate segment and to be laid flat when removed therefrom, a multiplicity of individual line members extending in parallel relation to each other on said form holder, parallel fianges inwardly bent from opposed edges of said plate portion, said fianges slidably engaging the ends of and retaining said line members, a multiplicity of recessed seats along the bend of each of said flanges, a followenbar extending substantially parallel to said line members on the form holder, and projections on said follower bar adapted to removably engage said form holder in said recessed seats for consolidating said line members thereon, and spring means carried by said follower bar and interposed between said follower bar and line members to resiliently compress the line members and retain them in consolidated relation.
