The invention relates to mechanism for opening the outer end of a coil of metal and feeding the same to a recoiler, and is more specifically concerned with mechanism for feeding a coil of hot rolled strip steel to a recoiler such as disclosed in Greer application Serial N0. 230,30 filed September 16, 1938 and Greer Patent No. 2,191,463, dated February 27, 1940, for loosely recoiling the coil so that it may be passed through a pickling machine of the general type disclosed in in Greer Patent No. 2,091,921 dated August 31, 1931 and Greer Patent No. 2,196,210, dated April 9, 1940. a
Difliculty has been experienced in starting the outer end of a hot rolled coil into recoilers of the general character above referred to, the outer end of the hot rolled coil being loosened or opened up and fed to the recoiler by hand.
The object of the present improvement is to provide a mechanism which will automatically feed the outer end of the co'il through a set of leveling or breaker rolls to the recoiler.
Another object is to provide two sets of cooperating guide chains for guiding the outer end of the coil to the recoiler mechanism.
A further object .is to provide means for adjusting the position of said guide chains to accommodate coils of different diameters.
A still further object is to provide means-for moving the guide chains to open or inoperative position and simultaneously moving the leveling or breaker rolls to operative position when the outer end of the coil has been received in the pinch of the feed rolls of the recoiler mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for rotating the coil after the outer end has been loosened or opened up so as to feed said outer end of the coil into the guide chains.
The above objects together with others which will be apparent from the drawings and following description or which may be later referred to may be attained by constructing the improved coil opener and feeder in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which 45 Figure 1 is a side elevation of the coil opener and feeder to which the-invention pertains;

The coil opening apparatus is mounted in a 55 to similar parts the opened outer end of the coil into housing indicated generally at H) and the feeda ing or guiding mechanism may be carried upon a housing H located adjacent thereto.
The present application is directed to the coil feeding apparatus, and while no claim is made herein to the coil opening apparatus which forms the-subject matter of a divisional application, Serial No. 371,876, filed December 27, 1940, this coil opening mechanism is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter described for the purpose of showing the relation of the twodevices as in actualuse.
A spaced pair of rolls [2 located in the lower portion of the housing l0 supports the coil l3 to be opened and means i provided as will be later described for rotating these rolls so as to project the feeding and guiding mechanism.

A sprocket wheel I5 is fixed upon one end of each roll I2 and sprocket chain I6 is located around said sprocket wheels to drive both rolls l2 in the same direction and at the same speed. As will be later described means is provided for driving one of the rolls [2 in the desired direction so that the rotation is transmitted to the other roll by the sprocket gearing l5i6.
For the purpose of accommodating coils of various widths, an adjustable plate Ill may be slidably. mounted at one end upon the tie rod it which is located transversely through the forward side of the housing 55.
The opposite end portion of the plate ll? is adapted to selectively engage any desired notch 19 in the plate 26 located transversely across the rear side of the housing.
In order to hold the coil rigidly against movement during the opening operation, a clamp is provided comprising the clamping jaw 26 fulcrumedas at 22 at one side of the housing It and extending through a slot 23 in the adjacent side of the housing, a lever arm 26 extending out wardly from the fulcrum and being pivotally connected as at 25 to the piston rod 29 of a fluid operated cylinder 2'3 which is hingedly mounted as at 28 upon the adjacent side of the housing id.

v It By operating the fluid cylinders 35 it will thus, be seen that the upper and lower units of the feeding and guiding mechanism may be swung from the full line positions of Figs. 1 and 2 to the broken line position of Fig. 2, at which time the upper and lower sets of chains will be moved out the fluid cylinder 53 which is pivotally connected as at 5| to t e arm 52 carried by the bracket 4i.
Springs 5 are connected at opposite ends to the studs 43 and to pins 54 at the forward end of the bifurcated head 43 so as to normally urge the fluid cylinder 33 toward .the position shown in full lines in Figs.-l and 2. J
A screw shaft 55 is joumaled in the uprights 43 adjacent to the guide plate 42 and the internally threaded boss 53 of the bracket 41 is mounted upon said screw shaft, a hand wheel 53a being fixed upon one end of the screw shaft for adjusting the position of the fluid cylinder 33 and spud 33 transversely relative to the housing Ill.
The feeding and guiding mechanism includes two cooperating sets of endless chains 51 and 53 carried by the upper and lower spaced pairs of plates 53 and 30, respectively, said plates being tied together as by the tie'bars 3|.
The upper chains 51 are located around sprockets s2 and 63 mounted upon the spaced shafts 34 and 35, respectively, journaled in the upper plates 53.

In the operation of the improved machine to open the outer end of a coil and feed the same to the recoiling machine, a hot rolled coil as indi-' cated at I3 is placed upon the rolls l2 and the clutch 33 is thrown in to rotate the rolls until the coil assumes the position shown in Fig. 2 with the outer end E thereof located as shown in said position of the-spud 33.

plates in opposite directions upon their pivotal points to move either the chains or leveling rolls into operative position, means foroperating said chains and means for rotating said coil 'supporting' rolls to rotate thecoil and feed the outer end of the coil between the chains and leveling rolls so as to unwind the coil.

Coil feeding apparatus including rolls for' supporting a coil, cooperating, endless chains carried by said plates at one side of the pivotal points of the plates, cooperating leveling rolls carried by said plates on the other side of said pivotal points, means for swinging said plates in opposite directions upon their pivotal points to coil and feed the outer end of the coil between the points of theplates, a plurality of endless chains carried by each pair of pivots, means for driving said endless chains in unison, cooperating leveling rolls carried'by said plates on the other side of said pivotal points, a fluid cylinder pivotally connected to one pair of plates, and a piston in said cylinder pivotally connected to the other pair of plates for swinging said plates in opposite directions upon the pivotal points to move either the endlesschaiis or leveling rollsinto operative position.
