My present invention relates to an improved novelty folder particularly adapted for advertise ing or allied purposes.
The invention consists in my novel method or manner of folding and illustrating fi u es or characters on a strip of paper or other suitable material in such a manner that when the strip sections are folded or unfolded, the figure or character on the strip of paper will be varied in height to present an amusing and entertaining novelty feature attractive to people of all ages.
The folder of my invention has a blank central section which may well be filled in with advertising media, and as the folder is inexpensive to manufacture and distribute, it will prove an effective advertising medium.
While in the drawings, I have illustrated the figure comprising the grotesque illustration of a man, on the front face of the folder, and partial pictorial illustrations on its rear face, it will be understood than any suitable illustration will prove practical, whether animate or inanimate.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a front face or view of the unfolded strip showing a grotesque elongated picture of a man extending the full length of the strip.
Figure 2 is a rear face view of the unfolded strip showing respectively three upper body-portions and three lower body-portions of a man arranged on sections in opposite relation to the blank center section of the strip.
Figure 3 is a front view of the folder having a single infold of the two end sections, and showing another grotesque picture of a man.
Figure 4 is a front view of the folder with double folds at its upper and lower ends, showing a third grotesque picture of a man.
Figure 5 is a face view of the folder with a final triple fold from its upper and lower ends and showing a grotesque picture of a short, stout man.
Figure 6 is a conventional edge view of the folder as it appears looking from the right in Figure 5.
The strip has folded sections A, B, C, D, E, F, and G.
Each of these sections has a front and rear face designated respectively as A and A B and B C and C D and D E and E; F and F and G and G As seen in Figures 1 and 2, the strip is to be folded on the transversely extending dotted lines I which represent original folding lines made in the strip either before or after the picturesand parts of pictures have been printed on'the' opposite sides or faces of the strip. f
With the strip in open, unfolded, position as seen in Figure l; the pictureillustrated represen-ts an elongated picture of a man as 2 and the center or torso portion of the body is placed in the section D of the strip. This center strip section D, it will be observed, is twice the width of the other sections A, B, C, E, F, and G.
The chest, shoulder, and head portions of the man in the picture cover the sections A, B, and C; while they legs and feet of the picture cover the sections E, F, and G.
In order to change the appearance of the picture of Figure 1 into a shorter and different man as in Figure 3, the two end sections A and G are folded toward the center section D along the dotted lines I and the head appearing on the rear face A will become aligned with the remainder of the upper portion of the picture 2; and when the rear face G of the section G is folded toward the center section D in Figure 3, the feet appearing on the face G will be aligned with the legs of the body of the picture 2.
To further shorten and vary the appearance of the original picture 2 as seen in Figure 4 the doubled end sections A and B are folded toward the center section D simultaneously, the section A having already been folded over the section B and the face appearing on the rear face C of section C will be aligned with the body portion of the picture 2; while the doubled sections G and E is folded simultaneously toward the center section D to align the booted legs on the rear face E of section E with the hips of the picture 2.
The final change may now be made by folding the triple sections A, B, and C simultaneously toward the center section of the strip and also folding the triple section G, F, and E toward the center whereupon the figure 4, half on the rear face 0 of section C and the other half on the rear face E of section E will appear as seen in Figure 5.
The changing appearance of the pictures may be reversed by reversing the order of operation described as by unfolding successively, the end sections away from the center, in opposite directions.
Still further grotesque pictures may be made and viewed by unfolding triple, double and single sections or folds on one side of the center sections separately, instead of simultaneously unfolding both ends of the folded strip.
Obviously, the number of folded sections is unlimited and the variations of the picture or character of Figure 1 may be increased to the desired maximum. It should thus be apparent that by the simple manipulation of the various folded sections of the strip toward and away from both sides of the center, amusing and entertaining pictures may be developed and that no particular skill in operating the device is necessary or required.
Further, advertising matter may be printed or otherwise applied to the rear face D of the center section D and it is believed that the strip will attract attention and prove efiicient in carrying to the public the advertising message containe on the back of the central section.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters;
Patentis: g H 1. A novelty device 7 comprising astrip having a center portion and fold sections on opppsitesides of the center portion and said fold sections being of lesser width than the center section, a figure on the front face of the strip and covering said fold sections, and partial figures illustrated on the rear faces of said fold sections whereby the figure may be progressively diminished as the fold sections are folded toward the center.
2. The method of making an advertising novelty which comprises printing a figure on one side of a strip of paper, printing figure-portions in opposed relation on the other side of the strip, and creating folds transversely of the strip between said figure-portions. 3. A novelty advertising device comprising a strip of paper having a grotesque, elongated, full figure of a man on the front face thereof, transverse folds forming sections in the upper and lower portions of the body of the figure, and partial, physically similar figure-portions on the rear face of said sections, said sections being adapted to be folded upon the front face of the strip to align the figure-portions with the full figure while obscuring that physical portion of the full figure;
