This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in display signs and more particularly to changeable card, picture and sign holders.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a holder in which the sign may be slidably inserted or removed and held in place when in position by means of a hinged detent capable of being locked in place in a frictional manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a Card or sign holder of the above mentioned type in which the card holding detent is slidably mounted at the mouth of the holder so that it may be clippedin position, forming a continuance of the rectangular card frame when in place and allowing the detent to be swung to an inoperative position while removing the card or sign.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a card or sign holder of the above mentioned type` in which the hinge joint for the detent is mounted for sliding and locking movement by supporting the hinge pintle in slotted plates whereby the pintle will be gripped in a narrowed portion of the slot when in its operative position.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a sign which is extremely simple in operation and which can be `manufactured by a pressing or stamping operation.
In the drawing'- Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the sign and card holder embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is an end elevational View showing a corner portion of the holder broken away to illustrate the construction of the marginal flange;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary rear elevational view illustrating the slotted plates for receiving the cover or detent hinge pintle;
Figure 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on line l-ll of Figure l, looking in the direction of the arrows, showing the card or sign (Cl. LLIL-125) ing a trough for receiving the lower edge of a card as at l. The opposite side edges of the plate 5 are provided with return bent flanges 8 formf ing marginal strips cooperating with the lower flange 6 for overlying the vertical edges of the 5 card or sign 'l to retain the latter in the holder. A pair of supporting brackets 9 is fastened to theyrear wall of the flat plate 5 and are angularly bent at the lower end as at l@ so that the card holder may be secured to a supporting sur- 10 face.
The upper edges Il of the marginal strips 8 are angularly cut to facilitate the easy insertion of the card 'l within the holder.
Secured to the rear wall of the plate 5 in 15 spaced relation` thereon are angle plates l2 fastened by means of rivets or the like as at I3 and having vertical flanges lll extending rearwardly therefrom. Formed in the upper portion of each ange lll is a wedge shaped slot I5 narrower at the lower end than at the upper portion so that a hinge pintle lli may slide therein in a Vertical plane.
A closure member Il has one end beaded as at lll through which is passed the hinge pintle I6 and the cover ll is slotted as at i9 in alignment with the vertical flanges lll as clearly shown in Figure 3. The free edge of the cover Il is bent downwardly as at 2li to form a continuation of the marginal strips 8 thereby completing 30v a rectangular card or sign frame.
Intermediate the ends of the cover ll is an opening 2l for exposing the pintle i6 whereby a coil spring 22 may be wrapped therearound and the free ends 23 and 2li may engage the back 35 plate 5 and cover l1 respectively.
In operation, the card or sign l may be slid into position between the return bent marginal` strips 8 until the lower edge engages the return bent marginal strip l and while the cover ll' is in the position shown in Figure 5. The cover l1 is then released so that the spring 22 will urge the cover forwardly in position to be moved downwardly as shown in Figure 4. As the hinge pintle i6 approaches the lower end of the slot l5, it is frictionally held between the tapering edges thereof and will prevent the accidental displacement of the card or picture 'l as shown in Figure 4.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred embodiment of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the sub-joined claims.
I claim:
1. A changeable sign including a backing plate having inturned flanges on the lower edge and vertical side edges to form guide grooves for a sign plate or the like, and a channel-shaped cover for the upper end of the backing plate forming a groove continuous with the aforesaid grooves and operative for retaining the sign plate or the like in position, and a vertically slidable hinge connection between the backing plate and the rear edge of said cover, the hinge connection in-A i cluding a hinge pin carried by the cover and angle strips with vertical slots therein carried by the backing plate with the hinge pin translatable in said slots.
2. A changeable sign including a backing plate having inturned flanges on the lower edge and vertical side edges to form guide grooves for a sign plate or the like, a channel-shaped cover for the upper end of the backing plate forming a groove continuous with the aforesaid grooves and operative for retaining the sign plate or the like in position, and a vertically slidable hinge connection between the backing plate and the rear edge of said cover, the hinge connection including a hinge pin carried by the cover and angle strips with vertical slots therein carried by the backing plate with the hinge pin translatable in said slots, and the rear side of said cover being slotted for passage of said angle strip during hinging movements of said cover.
