the flow into the said cup, the removability of the latter permits of easy cleaning and the emptying of its contents so that it will be thoroughly sanil5 tary.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a cup of this character, wherein the same carries a dispensable inner liner or bag for receiving sediment or matter running from an incision so l that the cup will be more sanitary and enabling the emptying and cleaning thereof with dispatch and ease.

A further object of the invention is `the provision of a cup of this character, wherein the same is made from metal having a removable lid and thus convenient access is had to the interior thereof and maximum life is assured, the body of the cup being of a construction to assure comfort to a wearer, avoiding soreness and leakage when in wearing position, the cup being supported by a belt to be fastened about a person and such cup can be readily lremoved without removal of the belt and such removal had with dispatch, the inlet side of the cup being of a character to effect a. broad seating surface and when applied to the body of a person assures a support to the tender tissues around the incision or colostomy, being a pad interposed between the inlet side of the cup and the body of the person to avoid contact of such cup with the skin 'resulting in perfect comfort and increasing sanitation during the use of such cup. i

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a cup of this character, wherein there is produced a sediment bowl carried considerably beneath the entrance to said cup so that matter owing into the cup drops down away from the colostomy and in this way avoids infection and leakage of such matter from the cup.

A still further` object ofthe invention is the provision of a cup of this character, wherein the same houses a dispensable inner lining or bag which receives matter delivered from an incision into the cup, this lining or'bag being readily re- 53 movable for the throwingaway of thevsame and (Cl. 12S-283) in` this manner keeping the cup cleaned within to avoid staining thereof, and receptive of a fresh or new liner or bag, the cup construction being such that it can be sterilized and rendered sanitary. '5 A still further object of the invention is the' provision of a cup of this character, which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, readily and easily applied and removed, and inexpensive to manufacture. 10

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists inthe features o f construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be l hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing', which discloses the pre- 15 ferrea-embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally the cup constituting the present invention and generally worn on a belt, a portion of i the belt being indicated -at B, which at one end 35 carries a buckle I0.,k for adjustable connection of the other end of said belt therewith so that the belt can be worn about the body of a person for sustaining the cup in an applied position for the catching of flowing matter from an incision made.' 40 in a surgical operation upon the person.

The cup A comprises a bowl-like body I0 more especially of saucer shape having opposite a concavo convexed permanently closed side II a flattened open side I2, the opening being circular and 45 marginally outwardly flanged at I3. The openingin the side I2 is eccentrically disposed and removably fitted upon its flange I3 is a mouth lid I4 having a circular entrance mouth I5, being centered in the said lid I4. The lid I4 concentric 50 tothe mouth I5 is slightly concaved at I6 and this mouth has an inwardly protruding annular lip I1 extending inwardly of the body I0 when the lip Il is placed over the opening and frictionally telescoped upon the ange I3 thereof. 55

Adapted to be inserted'into the body Il when the lid Il isremoved through the opening confronted by such lid is a dispensable inner liner or bag I8, preferably made from waterproof paper so that matter flowing from an incision through the mouth I5 will be collected in the said liner or bag I8 when within the body III and this bag when containing such matter may be readily thrown away on removal from the cup.

The lid I4 has an annular rim I0, the free edge thereof being serviceable as acutter for severing theliner or Ibag Il when overriding the flange I3 of the opening in the ilat side I2 of the body I of the cup and in this way relieving any surplus extent of the liner or bag when carried within the body III for the packing' of secretion or matter flowing from an incision in the use of the cup in colostomy surgical operations.v

The side II of the body III has permanently carried thereby spaced pairs of oppositely arranged hooking clps 2li, their -bills 2| being directed toward each other in the respective pairs and in this manner the belt can be removably engaged 'and'hooked by the clips for the mounting of the cup wearing position thereon, the cup being rea y removablefrom the belt B when fastened about the body of a person without removal of the belt. The clips 20 are arranged on the body I0 so that the opening for the lid I4 will be uppermost of the body I0 and in ,this

fashion when the cup is worn the body will assume a drop bowl position so that matter flowing into the body will settle in the portion of the body lowermost to the opening for the lid I4 without possibility of leakage through the mouth I when the lid I4 is applied to said body.

To avoid discomfort to a person wearing the cup and eliminate contact of the lid I4 with the body of such person or the contact of the flat side of said cup with the body, there is interposed between this flat side I2 and the body of the wearer a suitable protective pad, preferably made from `a thin cellucotton pad 22 having the hole 23 cut therein in register with the mouth Il of the lid I4 and by reason of the formation of the lid I4 in the flat side l2 of thebody Il a broad seating surface of the cupi with the pad is assured, beingno possibility of the mouth Il or the lid coming in contact with the body of the wearer of the cup during the use of the latter and also this pad 22 in applied relation with the cup to the person eliminates the escape of bad odors from the said cupthrough the open mouth I5. Thus in the use of the pad, the body is always dry and comfortable and there is no liability of the slipping or shifting of the pad with relation to the body. Perfect-comfort is assured to the patient or person while wearing the cup and the removal of such cup with dispatch is had and such cup can be readily cleaned for sanitary purposes in that it can be sterilized without affecting wearing qualities, the sacked matter being readily thrown away in that the liner or bag Il can be taken outof the cup or body I0, being made from paper can be conveniently destroyed. It is preferable that the body Il and the lid Il be made from metal although it may be made from other suitable material withstanding requirements inthe use of the cup for the cleaning thereof and durability, as, for example, made from glass, Bakelite or the like, while the liner or bag I3 is preferably made from waterproof flexible fibrous material, such The liner or bag when inserted in the body I0 through finger manipulation can be shaped for fitting therein, that is to say, when such liner or bag is dry, and the latter when becoming moist will shape itself to the interior of the cup.

In the Wearing of the cup in association with the pad, the lid Il and the flange I3 of the openin g become counterseated or countersunk in the said pad, as is clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawing, the cup and pad being in wearing posi-- tion in this view in the said drawing. What is claimed is:

A colostomy apparatus comprising a cup having va closed outer wall, an inner wall for said cup having an opening therein said opening being formed with an outwardly projecting neck, a dispensible bag in said cup, the mouth of said bag being placed so as to project through the neck of the cup, an annular cover member for said opening, said cover member being formed with inner and outer circumferential flanges projecting in the same direction, the outer flange being adapted to grip the' outer surface of the outwardly projecting neck of the inner wall with the mouth of the dispensible bag adapted to be gripped therebetween, and the inner circumferential ange being smoothly curved inwardly with respect to said cup, a celluiosic pad of absorbent material having 4an aperture smaller than the opening in the annular member adapted to be disposed with said aperture in registry with said opening and between the annular member and the body of the wearer, and means adapted to hold saidassembly on the body of the wearer.
