To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OLIVER C. GREEN, of Dublin, Vayne county, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Straw-Cutters; and I hereby declare the following' to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this speciication.

This invention relates to a straw cutter having a V-shaped box armed with knives at its front end adapted to cut shearwise with the knife on the sliding gate, and consists in a certain arrangement of parts hereafter set forth to facilitate the operation of cutting.

A, A, are cross trestles supporting a V- shaped box, or trough B, armed at its front end with a knife b, of corresponding shape.

`The front trestle A is flush o1' nearly so with the front of the trough and affords attachment for the fender posts or guides C, and C', of a gate I), to which a knife E, is obliquely attached so as to cut shearwise with the knife Z), on the trough.

F, is the gage board attached to the gate D, a short distance below the knife so that in the elevated position of the gate it forms a stop for the ends of the straw to gage the coarseness of the cut and when the gate is 21,9154, dated November 2, 1858.

The handle or lever G by which the gate is depressed is pivoted at its center to the gate and has its fulcrum at g, in the upper end of a pitman or connecting rod I), which is at its lower end pivoted (p) to the fender post C.

H, is a spring attached to the under side. of the lever G, and impinging against ay pin I, projecting from the fender post C, so as to cushion the final descent of the gate and assist its return.

K, is a weight which may be attached to the lever G, to assist the operation of cutting.

I claim as new and of my invention herein:

The described arrangement of the hinged connecting rod P, lever G, spring H, pin I, sliding gate D, and oblique knife E, with the V shaped knives Z9, at the end of the trough B, for the purpose set forth.
