PATENT OFFICE SEALING AND HANDLE ATTACHING DEVICE FOR PACKAGES Martha Goldschmidt, Berlin, Germany Application June 15, 1936, Serial No. 85,380
In Germany January 7, 1936 3 Claims.
This invention .relates to package tying and carrying devices and more especially to a combined binding and handle-attaching strip which is provided with adhesive for applying or securing the same to the package and at spaced points with handles or loops for conveniently carrying the package.
The invention has special reference to adhesive strip paper a supply of which is wound up to a roll, wherefrom portions may be cut off to be secured to the package for the purpose to seal the package and to attach a handle to it.
The main object of the invention is to provide an improved manner of fastening the handle or loop to the binding strip, which is simple and economical in manufacture and durable and efficient in construction.
With this object in view, the invention resides in the peculiar method of strengthening the adhesive strip paper at that point where the han- 20 dies or loops are secured to it, for the purpose to prevent a breakage of the strip and a peeling off from the package and a loosening of the handle whereon the package is carried. v
Other objects of the invention will be fully un- 25 derstood from a description of the drawing and the claims hereinafter given.
Of the drawing Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a supply roll of the adhesive strip, from which roll a part of the strip is unwound and which part shows one form of the improved attachment of the carrying loop to the strip.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the strip taken on the line II-II of Figure 1.
35 Figure 3 is also a longitudinal section view similar to Figure 2 showing a modified method of fastening the loop to the strip.
Figure 4 represents a perspective view oi a package sealed and provided with a carrying loop 40 attached thereto by means of the adhesive strip.
Like characters represent like parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
The adhesive strip b wound up to a supply roll a is provided with spaced openings, through which are threaded the ends of a ribbon or tape, forming the handle 0. The perforated points of the strip 17 are reinforced on the side coated with adhesive by a small piece of strong paper, fabric or other suitable material, which is likewise per- 50 forated and through which are threaded the ends of the loop 0, as shown in Figure 2; these ends are secured to the adhesive strip 17 and the reinforcing member 3, which is also provided with an adhesive coating. 55 A modified method of anchoring the handle or loop is shown in Figure 8, whereby the ends of the ribbon are positioned between the strip b and the reinforcing member d, where they are secured by adhesive. Packages are usually wrapped with paper, which is folded on two opposite sides of the package, 5 whereby the wrapper may be fastened on-the package by adhesive strip. As it is sufficient to provide a handle only at one side of the package, in accordance With the invention the strip 1) is divided by transverse lines e as shown in Figure 1 into portions provided with handles, which portions alternate with others bearing no handles. Preferably the portions of the strip whereon a handle is fastened are made longer than those without a handle. Thus the portions of the adhesive strip containing a handle should extend over the top of the package and down into engagement with the two adjacent parallel side walls, as shown in Figure 4, so that the handle is secured to the package in a most efficient manper while the portion of the adhesive strip bearmg no handle may be fastened on the opposite side of the package in order only to close the wrapper over the package. 3
Having described the invention I claim: 1. A sealing and handle-attaching device for packages comprising an adhesive strip having spaced openings therein, a handle in the form of a loop projecting through each opening and havng the ends adjacent the strip, and a reinforcmg means for each loop secured on the adhesive coating of the strip and having a perforation therein through which the handle projects, the ends of the loops being fastened to the adhesive coating of the strip and the reinforcing means.
i2. The combination of a sealing and handle-attaching adhesive strip with spaced perforations therein, a handle provided for each perforation and consisting of a loop and two ends of which the loop projects through its perforation, and a reinforcing member adjacent each perforation, the ends of each handle surrounding its reinforcing member and being secured between the stri and its reinforcing member. 3.,An endless strip for sealing packages and attaching a handle thereto, comprising an adhesive band and a plurality of spaced loops forming handles secured to the band, the band having a pair of spaced transverse lines between eachtwo adjacent loops to divide the band alternately into sections one provided with a handle to be attached, when separated, to a part of the package and the adjacent section without a handle to be attached, when separated, to another part of the package.
