ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 21, 1939 4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MATCH BOOK George Jahns,
I Application April 26,
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements .in match books, and has particular reference to the forming of a refuse receptacle'within the match book without unduly altering its size.
.A further object of the invention is to produce a device of this character, wherein the match book to all intents and purposes will have the general appearance of the match book now commonly found on the market without altering the cost of the match book.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is'simple to con struct, easy to use and one which will not spill the contents into the pocket of the user.
' Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
' Fig. l is a side elevation of my match book with the receptacle in open position;
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a modified form' of my device;
. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a match book folded, and the receiving slit formed in the wall thereof g Fig. 5 is .a rear elevation of Fig. 4, but showing the slit formed in the back;
151g. 6 is a plan view of the blank before folding; an I Fig. 'l is an enlarged cross sectional view taken on the line 1-1 ofFig. 1. I so It often occurs that a smoker will be forced to f drop cigarette ashes onthe floor, due to the lack of ashreceptacles, and, therefore, I have devised a receptacle formed within a match book into which receptacle ashes, cigarette butts, burnt matches,
40 etc., may-be placed: thus providing a receptacle always available.
In the accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose. of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral I designates a blank which is folded upon itself and glued alongoneedgaasshownat Linllgflf. This formsatubularstructurewhichmaybe m Hollywood, Calif. 1937, Serial No. 139,046
as shown in Fig. 1, wherein the end is folded about the bottom of the matches 1 and stitched. as shown at 8. The free end 9 may now be held in the position of Fig. 1, and when bent, as shown at A, it forms a pocket into which ashes, etc., may be 5 deposited, but when swung downwardly to form a cover for the matches I the entire device has the appearance of the ordinary match book.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 3, I form a slit I I and I seal the end B. By pushing the sides 10 of the tubular structure thus formed toward each other, the slit I I will open and ashes may be deposited within the pocket.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, I have shown the slit on the front and back surface. It will be apparent that with my device it will be possible to deposit within the pocket formed by the tubular structure a suitable quantity of ashes, which ashes when crushed will occupy a very small amount of space. Also cigarette butts may be placed within this pocket. as well as match stubs. As this match book will last but a short time before being thrown away, it will be apparent that only a small accumulation will occur, which accumulation will never exceed the original bulb of the match book.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, 80 shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subioined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A match book comprising a blank folded upon itself to form a tubular structure, one end of said tubular structure having a card of matches secured thereto, the other end of said tubular structure being sealed, a slit in said tubular structure adjacent the sealed end thereof, whereby ashes may be deposited within said tubular structure, and said tubular structure being foldable substantially midway its length to form a book like arrangement to protect said matches and adapted to seal at its folding line deposits of ashes within said tubular structure.
