1 Claim.

This invention relates to a tent pole, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby the pole can be readily increased or decreased in length from the inside of the tent, thus providing simple means for tightening the tent or slackening the same.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:--

Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved pole.

Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig- 50 ure 1.

In this drawing the numeral I indicates a base part which is fastened to the lower end of an elongated tubular member 2 and the numeral 3 indicates a second tubular member telescoping into the member 2. A bolt 4 passes through the lower part of the member 2 to limit the downward movement of the member 3 and a cap plate 5 is connected to the upper end of the member 3 and has a conical socket member 6 attached to its upper face for supporting a flag pole I. The plate 5 forms a support for that portion of the tent through which the parts 6 and I pass and in order to hold said portion of the tent on the plate 5 a hook 8 is attached to the upper part of the member 3 for receiving a tie rope which is attached to the tent. This will keep the tent from moving up or down on the pole. A hook or eye 9 is connected to the top of the member 2 and supports a pulley block Ill over which a rope or cable ll passes, the cable also passing over a pulley in a block l2 which has a hook l3 thereon for passing through an elongated slot M in the member 2 to engage the lower end of the member 1938, Serial No. 202,973

3. Thus by pulling upon the cable II the block and tackle will engage the member 3 to tighten the tent and by loosening the cable said member 3 can be lowered to loosen the tent.

As is well known when it rains the tent must be loosened to prevent damage to the canvas of the tent and also to prevent pulling up the stakes of the tent. Then when the wind blows hard the tent must be tightened to prevent damage to the canvas and therefore it is very important to provide means whereby the tent can be quickly tightened or loosened and this improved tent pole permits this and it also enables the tent to be adjusted from inside of the tent.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.

It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A tent pole comprising a base, a lower tubular member having its lower end connected with the base and said lower member having a longitudinally extending slot therein, a stop pin passing through the lower member and located in a plane slightly above the plane of the bottom wall of the slot, an upper member slidably arranged in the lower member and having its lower end resting on the pin when the upper member is in fully lowered position, a projection at the upper end of the lower member, a pulley block carried by the projection, a second pulley block having a hook thereon for engaging the lower end of the upper member when said hook is passed through the slot, a cable passing around the pulleys of the blocks and tent engaging means at the other end of the upper member.
