. 'I'he present invention relates to cartons, made of paper or box-board, and has for its principal use, Ethe packaging of pourable dry materials, such' as soap powder; cereals, sugar and the ilse, and further, the dispensing of such pourable materials through the means of a self-formed pouring spout developed in said carton which is closable when not in use, andis flat topped.
One of the'features of lthe present improvement is in the provision Aof dual, auxillary'gle laps, to coact with the main, end closing glue cover ap, for providing a sift proof closure for `the 'fiat-topped, dispensing end of the carton.
' when it is initially closed and sealed, and whereby said glue laps are of themselves glue-sealed to one of the top closing flaps, thus sealing op'l posed, normally open edges against the lossjof material therefrom or the entrance of undesirr dispensing end partly closed;

Fig; 5 is a fragmentary side viewmf Fig. 4; I
. Fig. 6 is a fragmented plan view showing the temporaryspeut seal broken;
Fig. 7`is a fragmented plan view showing the Fig. 8 is a fragmented plan view showing spout Fig. 9 is a fragmentary side View of, F181 8;
Fig. 10 is a section taken on line lli-Il, Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 11 is a view, like Fig. 10,' showing the act of closing and sealing thev carton; and
Fig. 12 is a fragmentary view of the carton blank at one end.
The carton as shown in the blank, in Fig. 12, .comprises four main, carton body forming panels A, B, C and D, and a panel-engaging glue lapE.
11 calm, (ci '22a-11) the said lap E being attached to the inside side edges 'I' of panel A and the inside side edge l' of main end closing panel I.
'Ihe infoldable end closing members. forming' y the complete carton end closing means comprise 5 a main closing flapr I'-Ib, of substantially rectangular outline, defined and scored from bodyforming panel A by a score line q, score line a being a common score line by which all ofthe other end clomng ilaps are deiined from their l0 associate body-forming panels and panel glue lap E.
Main closing flap I and its triangular auxiliary vsub-flap lb are deined from each other'by an.
angularly positioned score `line b, lb ,being fu r i6 ther deiined by an extension of bodydefining scoreline c.
lThe next associate enclosing minor end closing ilap, 2c, 2, 2f, is substantially rectangular in outline and is defined from its associatebody- '20 forming panel B by common score line a, and is deiined'irom its auxiliary, triangular sub-ilaps 2c and 2f, by divergent, angularly disposed score lines d and e, respectively. The outer edge of .auxiliary triangular sub-nap 2c is provided/ with 25 a glue lap1 fl, which is defined along its' connecting edge by a perforated` line q, of weakened rer sistance.
A main closing cover 'iiap,. comprising scored and connected parts 3, 5, gand Im, are of such 30 combined dimension as to overlay to completely cover the 'carton end and the other under-folded,
end closing flaps. The main closing 'cover is panel score-line f. A second ap 5, extending outwardly and deflned'from flap 3 by a score line 1,has a triangular auxiliary sub-nap 5m defined therefrom by an angular score line m, the said 45. latter score line and the adjacent score line g converging from the oppas/'ed edges or' cornersr inwardly to a point q on score line l, and a perforated line of weakened resistance p, runs fromscore line f to said point or apex q.
A fourth enclosing flap denoted by l, 4i, 4j is deilned from the main body-forming panel D by common score line r,. ap l having two triangular, auxiliary sub-naps 4i, and I7 d ened vfrom opposite cornersbyfangularly disposed 55 face of flap-Sq, asin Fig. 10.
. Flg..10, as a permanent carton-seal.
score lines i' and i respectively. Body panel glue lap E is defined from nap li by score line k..
Auxiliary sub-nap 47' has at its outer edge, a glue lap i, which is defined therefrom by a score line n. y
As thus described all angularly` disposed score score .lines by 90 degrees, andat an angle of '45 degrees from the associate common score lines c, f, h, lc and a. Triangular sub-flap m is disposed at an angle of 45 degrees to its line o f Vweakened resistance p and at an included angle oi 90 degrees to score line g. l
As is obvious, both ends of the carton may have the above described closing 'flap arrangement, or the other end of the carton not shown, may have any other conventional carton closing end. Y
As above deseribed in the making of the blank, the blank is rst cut out, scored as shown, and
the glue lap E is bent upwardly and'over on itsv score line Ic until it rests onpanel D and flaps 4 and 4i. Then glue isplaced .on the exposed face bf E, and the blank is bent up and over on machine flat, is packed `and shipped flat, in bundles, to theuser. cartons, they are set up, one 4by one in a set-up machine by rst being opened or bending on the score Eines c, f, h and k, into rectangular position, and the bottoms glue sealed.
Then the packages are filled from their -upper open ends, and after lling are glued, closed, and glue sealed. This operation may be reversed, and the pouring spout endfmaybe rst sealed,l the package lled from the bottom and then the bottom may be. sealed.
In sealing'the dispensing vend, the entire surface of flap 5--5m is glued, as indicated in 12 by stippling, and, in sequence, with all of 'the score lines of the end closing naps properly (broken, with opposed triangular flaps 2 and 4 'inwardly bent, asin Figs. 1, 3 and 11, downward pressure upon aps I and 3 causes the triangular flaps 2 andi to go down to closingposition, be-
ing so forceeI by the triangular auxiliary subnaps 4i, li and 2f, 2c, that the vwhole series -ofvv end flaps are laid down in orderly sequence to closing position, as in Figs. 5 and -10.
' During lthe act ofclosing the endaps the perforated and scored glue laps 6 and 1 carried rby auxiliarysub-naps I1 and 2c, respectively are' I' drawn v along- 'the glued surface of flap S-Sm with theirv outer edges in vscraping contact .with said glued surface as in Fig. 11,-thus accumulating some glue therefrom, and in the final act of closing, as in Fig. 1l, said laps lA and 1 passA over the outer edges of auxiliary sub-flaps 4i and 2f, and n nally rest between the adjacent inner faces of said auxiliary sub-flaps and the inner As thus described, the final closing,lwhic1 is accomplished veryrapidly leaves the laps'S and 1 `glued, in ilat ccntact, betweenV sub-flaps 4i .and 2f and the face of impl-39',- with cover flap 5-5m glued to the outer face of nap Las in To open'the carton'intc flnal'pouring spout condition, as shown inFigs. 8 and 9, the perforated line of weakened resistance E whichV lays directly over triangular flap 2, and forms a temporary seal therefor, is bre-ken or cut, Fig. 6, as
shown' by the straight'line P, and the two-'pairs j When the user receives the` '1 is torn from its associate sub-flaps 2c atV its weakened line o, and the lap remains adhered to sub-nap 3g of cover 3, as in Figs. 8 and 9.
, It is the function of the glue laps and 'I .to seal the open edges between sub-flaps i and 2c `and the contacting cover portions 3\and 3g to render them sift' proof at their points of contact,
best shown in Fig. 1G;
To`close the carton .spout from its open -position of Figs. 8 and 9, it is merely necessary to push triangular' panel 2 back to position shown in Fig. 7, and refcld the aps 5m-2c and,3g2f back to the position, as shown in Fig. 6.
