UNITED STATES PATENT Orron.
MATTHIAS HAUBER, OF GRANT CITY, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT INBOOT AND SHOE UPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,529, dated December 3, 1878; application filed October 17, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAT-rams HAUBER, of Grant City, in the county of Worth and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Backs 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide means for preserving the set and crimp of shoe backs; and said invention consists in providing the shoe-back (or quarters) upon its inside with stays or braces of fabric, stitched or otherwise secured to the leather, and arranged in such manner as to preserve the set or crimp of the back and quarters.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a shoe embracing my invention; Fi 2, an inside view of a shoe-back, (the quarters being in one piece,) showing the fabric stays and their arrangement; Fig. 3, the shoe-quarter, show ing the crimping; and Fig. 4, a section on line 00 m of Fig. 2, showing the crimp of the back.
The shoe-back in this shoe is of one piece of leather, adapted to be united to the vamp in the usual way. It is crimped to the proper shape for the heel and ankle part, as shown in the drawings. To preserve this crimp and to stay the quarters a a, I stitch fabric stays b 1) cc to the leather, on the inner side thereof, and arrange them so as to cross or unite with each other in the manner that will best produce the desired result. The horizontal brace or braces b b emerge from the union point A at the greatest depression of the crimp, and extend to the greatest depression of the anklequarter, or to that part or point just below the instep, in either case answering the purpose. The diagonal or cross braces c c serve as auxiliaries in effecting the result sought-that is, the bracing of the whole back and quarters. The upper diagonal braces, c c, prevent the falling down of that part of the shoe-back. The fastening of the bracing-strips may be at points, or continuous; but I prefer to sew them on by one or more rows of stitching. The point of meeting of the stays should be at the point of the greatest depression of the crimp, and they may extend therefrom in any suitable arrangement that will keep the crimp intactthey may only extend a short distance from the union; but I prefer the designs shown.
The shoe is made with a counter and otherwise as usual.
I claim 1. A shoe-back of one piece of leather, crimped to conform to the heel and ankle portion of the foot, and held in such position by braces of fabric secured thereto.
2. A shoe -back of one piece of leather, crimped to conform to the heel and ankle portion of the foot, and held in such position by the union brace secured thereto, substantially as shown and described.
3. A shoe provided with a shoe-back, a a, of one piece of leather, crimped as described, and having quarter-braces b b and diagonal braces c c c c stitched to the inside thereof, and meeting at the greatest point of crimpdepression, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MATTHIAS HAUBER.
