The invention relates to listing registers, name- 1y those adding and subtracting machines operating to print or list the items, and more particularly to such registers provided with a key board having digital keys common to the ac cumulator and printing mechanisms.
It is necessary when printing totals of accumu lative values from such registers to render the keyboard mechanism inoperative, this being usually done by clearing the'keyboard of any values set therein and locking the keys against depres-- sion in well known manner. This however remders the keyboard inoperative until near the end of a cycle of operation, and it is an object of the present invention to provide means controlled by the total-taking mechanism for rendering the keyboard operative during a totaling or a sub-totallng cyle. Another object is to provide similarly controlled means to accomplish said object and also to render the keyboard clearout means inoperative during such cycle. Another object is to provide similarly controlled means for accomplishing said object and also for rendering inoperative the means for preventing operation of the digital keys during such cycle.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth in the claims.

, General operation 5 each lever GIII terminates in a segmental registering rack, the rearward arm has a lister type bar 0H pivoted thereto, and the upper arm has a pivotal connection with a differentially mov able toothed member or stop bar 6I5, cooperating with a column oi digital keys 2 I 5 for each said order the teeth of said member being variably spaced.
' The digital keys 2 l 5 which have been depressed to represent a value, are latched in depressed position by slide plates 2I6, with the lower ends of the key stems lying in the paths of movement of the related teeth of said members or bars GIS, 10 thereby allowing said bars to advance a distance corresponding to the values of said keys, upon operation of the machine. Depression of a digi tal key will also remove a column latch 2 from the path of movement of its related bar 6I5, these 5 latches preventing movement of a stop bar (H5 and a lever 6I0 in any column in which no digital key is depressed.
A rock shaft SM is provided with cam means 3I8 for governing the movement of a spring ten- 20 sioned rocker frame SIB, mounted on shaft 008, said frame SIG carrying a series of dogs 6H normally engaged by studs 659 of the levers BIO. As shaft 30I is rotated forwardly, the frame 6I6 will be rocked, and any of the levers 6I0 which have 25 been released by the depression of digital keys will be allowed to rotate, under the influence of their springs 683, until they are stopped by the related teeth of the bars BIS contacting the stems of said keys. Upon rearward rotation of 0 the shaft 3M, the dogs 6I1 will return the operated levers M0 to normal position.
This excursion of the levers 6I0 serves to register amounts set in the keyboard upon one or more accumulators and to set up a similar amount on 35 the printing line of the type bars.
These accumulators are shown in Patent No. 1,867,002, as means for storing positive or negative totals, to be printed. Tens carry mechanism is provided in accord with the disclosure of 40 Patent No. 1,828,180;
Motor drive means The shaft 303 is oscillated by means of an electric motor I00, connected through gearing I0I (Fig. 2) and clutch means with a crank arm I05, of a shaft I05, one 01 the gears IOI having an extended hub provided with a notched periphery 3', forming one member of said clutch, and the crank arm I05 having pivoted thereto a pawl 50 I03, adapted to engage one of the notches of said hub and forming the other member of said clutch,
a spring 2' connecting one arm of said pawl with said crank arm tending to move said pawl into engagement with a notch of said hub to thereby render the clutch operative. Clutch lever I06 is fulcrumed at I01 to the framing of the machine and normally engages the lower arm of said pawl to hold the latter disengaged from said clutch hub. The crank arm I05 is connected to an arm 3I6 fast with shaft 30I by means of a connecting rod I08, so that as crank arm I05 is rotated, the shaft 301 is oscillated.
To establish the drive, clutch lever I06 being rocked about its fulcrum, the contact members of a switch in circuit with said motor are engaged, all as disclosed in one of said patents, to thereby start the motor. At the same time, the lower arm of the clutch lever I06 will be disengaged from the clutch pawl I02, whereupon said pawl will engage said clutch hub of the crank arm I05, to render said clutch operative.
The spring III tends to disengage clutch lever I06 from said pawl, said lever being normally held in engaging position by means of a latch II2, the latter being released upon depression of a general operation key as described in one of said patents. This latch will return under spring action to latching position, and towards the end of the cycle of operation an arm H5 of crank member I 05 will contact a tooth II6 of clutch lever I06 and thereby force said lever back to latching position and bring the end of said lever into the path of movement of the clutch pawl I03 to release the same from the clutch hub.

ed on rock plate 220, and durirg a return stroke of these parts said lever will rock said plate clockwise about its pivot 2I8 and a pawl 2I9 pivotally secured to said plate will engage a stud 263 secured to clearout bail 221 to thereby operate the column latches 2I4 and move slides 2I6 forwardly and release any depressed digital keys 2I5.
Operation preventing means for the digital keys The following means are provided to prevent operation of the keys 2I5 during a regular cycle of operation:
Upon the forward stroke of the parts stated, an arm 226 (Fig. 3) fast to the shaft 30I will be carried away from a pin 228 of slide 230, thereby releasing the slide. 7
Secured to the left hand end of the shaft 224 is a depending finger 23I (Fig. 6) urged by means oi its spring 232 against a pin 233 secured to the aforesaid slide 230, which being released as stated, the finger 23I will be rocked by its spring to rock shaft 224, and thereby bring the latch pawls 225 carried by shaft 224 into engagement with pro- Jections 234 of the slides 2I6 and lock said slides against forward movement to thus prevent depression of the digital keys 2I5.
Near the end of the cycle, the arm 226 will reengage the pin 228 of slide 230 and move said slide rearwardly to thereby lift the latch pawls 225 from engagement with the slides 2I6 and unlock the keyboard.
Total printing A total is taken by releasing the differentially movable elements or stop bars 6 I6, the latter being then spring actuated to rotate the accumulators subtractively until suitable pins on the accumulator wheels contact with 0 stop members as hereinafter described. This will set up the total in the type bars, and the hammers will be tripped to print the total. The bars 6I6 are then reengaged with the oscillatory frame BIG and during the return stroke of the latter said bars are moved rearwardly to normal position, the accumulator wheels, in the case of a sub-total, being held in engagement with segmental racks of the actuator levers during the return stroke of the parts, whereby the amount previously subtracted from the register will be added back thereinto in well known manner.
Depression of the total key 210 or the sub-total key 213 will not only trip the column latches 2 (Fig. 1) through the pin 263 and the clearout bail 221, but will also trip a latch 620 (Fig. 2) through operation of a control lever 62 I, pivotally connected to said latch. The latch 620 normally engages a lug of total segment 6I8, preventing movementof said segment under the influence of its spring 68L Upon the tripping of said latch 620, total segment 6I3 will operate a shaft 601, having a helically arranged row of pins, acting to trip the latching dogs 6 successively from right to left of the machine, the tripping of said dogs releasing the actuator levers 6I0 and also releasing stop members 6 I3, so that the latter will fall into the path of the 0 stops 451 of the accumulator wheels.
When this zeroizing operation has progressed to the left hand side of the machine, a rearwardly extending arm of the total segment 6I3 will contact a projection of rod I30 having connection with trigger I3I, to move said rod downwardly, thereby releasing the latch II2 to start the machine in operation. The machine being thus started, the frame 6I6 will carry the dogs 6I1 forwardly and said dogs will snap under the stop members 6i 3 and the studs 659 of "the actuator levers. The hammers will now be tripped, and upon rearward movement of the frame 8I6, the actuator levers will be restored to normal position.
The total and the sub-total keys are each locked in depressed position by latch 223, and released near the end of the cycle of motor operation by engagement of an arm of the lever 321 above click pawl 222 of latch striker plate 220, the parts of the total setting mechanism being then restored to normal position by means described as follows:
In tripping the total segment latch 620 (Fig. 2), the shaft 206 is rocked by engagement of key 213 or 213 with crank arm 239 of said shaft, an. arm 229 of said shaft being then operated by spring I5 connecting arms 239 and 229 and contacting with a pin I32 of the latch control lever 62I to trip said latch. The latch being tripped and total segment 6I8 rising under influence of its spring, the latching lug 6I8' of said segment will contact said lever 62I to thereby move said pin I32 out of contact with arm 229 and into contact with a shoulder I33 of one arm of a rock lever I34 on shaft I34, pin I32 being held against said shoulder by the action of the spring 62I. During the following motor operation of the machine, the forward movement of cam 3Il on shaft 30I will release a spring tensioned push rod I35 connected to the other arm of said rock lever at I 35' to thereby move shoulder I33 until said pin I32 comes below arm 229, and upon release of the total or the sub-total key the latch 620 and the arm 229 will be restored to normal position by the action of the latch spring, thus concluding the totalizing operation.

When the actuator levers 6 I 0 are moved in accord with a key setting or an accumulator registration, the related type bars will be raised to bring the appropriate type to the printing line. The type hammers (Fig. 1) are adapted to be operated by spring actuators 100, but are normally held in tensioned position by latches 1M. When a type bar is raised, a tripping finger 102 is allowed to move into engagement with the corresponding latch I, and at the end of the forward movement of shaft 30 I, a frame upon which the tripping fingers are mounted is moved forwardly, thereby releasing the hammers from those latches which have been engaged by the fingers 102.
Free keyboard mechanism To provide for operativeness of the digital keys 2I5 while a total or a sub-total cycle is in progress, the forward and rearward supports fl and 2 of stop bars 6I5 are slidably mounted in the machine frames 3 and 4 (Figs. 1 and 4). Upon depression of a total or a sub-total key, means are provided as follows to move the stop bars 615 towards the right and out of cooperative relation with the stems of the digital keys 2 i 5.
Pivotally mounted at 5 (Fig. 8) to the framing of the machine is a cam plate 6 provided with projections 1 and 8 underlying the total and the sub-total keys 21B and 213. The lower cam surface 8 of the plate 6 is in engagement with an arm 9 (Fig. 4) of a bail lever I0, pivotally mounted upon supports II and I2 fast to the framing of the machine. The ball lever ID has pin and slot engagement I3 with the supports I and 2 of the stop bars 6I5,and upon depression of a total or a sub-total key 218 or 213, the plate 6 will cam said ball lever I0 clockwise as seen in Figure 4, thereby sliding the supports I and 2 towards the right and carrying the said stop bars M5 out of register with the stems of the digital keys 215, as seen in Figure 5.
The total and the sub-total keys 218 and 213 are each adapted to be held in depressed position by means of a latch 223, tensioned by the aforesaid spring I5. Near the end of the cycle of op= eration, the arm 321 will rock the plate 226 in the manner previously described, and a tooth of said plate will contact pin 2I1 (Figure 2) of the latch 223, thereby releasing the depressed key; .and bail lever Ill being restored to normal position by action of the spring I6 will again. bring the stop bars 6I5 into register with the stems of the digital keys 2I5.
The following means are provided to render inoperative the keyboard clearout mechanism previously described,
The rocking of the arm or bell lever 22% during depression of the total or the sub-total key will cause a rearwardly extending arm 229 of said bell lever to engage lug ll of latch 223, thereby rocking said latch clockwise (Figs. 2 and 3). Lug I1 underlies one arm of a bell lever I8, pivotally mounted at I 9 and will rock the same in a clockwise direction. The upper arm of said bell lever 18 has engagement with a slide 20 provided with a projection 2I having engagement with one arm of the pawl 2I3. Clockwise movement of bell lever I8 will therefore move slide 20 rearwardly, thereby rotating the pawl 21! about its pivot sumciently to bring the hook end of said pawl out of cooperative relation with the stud 283 of the clearout bail 221, and as the arm 321 rocks the plate 220 in the manner previously described, the pawl 2I9 will move idly past stud 263, the keyboard clearing devices being thus rendered inoperative until release of the depressed key 218 or 213.
The keyboard locking devices will also be rendered inoperative during a total or a sub-total cycle by means described as follows:
Secured to the left hand end of the slidable support rod I of stop bars 8I5 is a bracket 22 (Figures 4 and 6) provided with an arm 23 adapted, as rod 11 is moved towards the right in totals taking, to be moved into the path of movement of a pin 24 secured to the aforesaid slide 230. This will prevent the forward movement 0! said slide 230 during a cyclic movement of the machine, thereby holding the depending finger 23i in rearward position, the locking pawls 225 thus being held upwardly out of engagement with the slide 2 i6.
E claim:
1. In a listing register, comprising an accumulator, printing mechanism, a keyboard having digital keys, means for holding said digital keys in set position, actuating means for said accumulator and said printing mechanism, difierentially movable elements cooperating with said digital keys and said actuating means, total-taking means, said actuating means operating under control of said total-taking means to set up a total from said accumulator in said printing mechanism, to print said total, to reset the accumulator and to restore parts, to normal position, and cyclically operable means for releasing the holding means to clear the keyboard; means controlled by said total-taking means for moving said differential elements out of register with said digital keys and for rendering the keyboard clearout means inoperative during a totaling cycle.
2. In a listing register, comprising an accumulator, printing mechanism, a keyboard having digital keys, means for holding said digital keys in set position, actuating means for said accumulator and said printing mechanism, differentially movable elements cooperating with said digital keys and said actuating means, total-taking means, said actuating means operating under control of said total-taking means to set up a total from said accumulator in said printing mechanism, to print said total, to reset the accumulator and to restore parts to normal position, and cyclically operable means including a clearout member and a device engaging the same for releasing the holding means to clear the keyboard; means controlled by said total-taking means for moving said diiferential elements out of register with said digital keys and for holding said device disengaged from said clearout memher during a totaling cycle.
3. In a listing register, comprising an accumulator, printing mechanism, a keyboard having digital keys, means for holding said digital keys in set position, actuating means for said accumulator and said printing mechanism, differentially movable elements cooperating with said digital keys and said actuating means, total-taking means, said actuating means operating under control of said total-taking means to set up a total from said accumulator in said printing mechanism, to print said total, to reset the accumulator and to restore parts to normal position, and cyclically operable means cooperating with said holding means to prevent operation 01' said digital keys alter initiation of a cycle of operation; means controlled by said total-taking means for moving said diflerential elements out of register with said digital keys and for rendering said key operation preventing means inoperative during a totaling cycle.
4. In a lasting register, comprising an accumulator, printing mechanism, a keyboard having digital keys, means for holding said digital keys in set position, actuating means for said accumuiator and said printing mechanism differentially movable elements cooperating with said digital keys and said actuating means, total-taking means, said actuating means operating under control of said total-taking means to set up a total from said accumulator in said printing mechanism, to print said total, to reset the accumulator and to restore parts to normal position, and cyclically operable means cooperating with said holding means to prevent operation of said digital keys after initiation or a cycle or operation including a longitudinal slide device; means controlled by said total-taking means for moving said differential elements out of register with said digital keys and for rendering said key operation preventing means inoperative during a totaling cycle including a transverse slide device engaging said diilferential elements, and means carried by said transverse slide device and engaging said longitudinal slide device.
