Description
April 20, 1937. M. MEEPOS 2,078,010
DETACHABLE FLUSH SWIVEL FOR GUN SLINGS Filed March 6, 1934 Inventor Patented Apr. 20, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DETACHABLE FLUSH SWIVEL FOR GUN SLINGS 2 Claims.
My present invention has for its object to provide a quickly detachable swivel for gun slings, also known as gun straps, permitting a gun sling or strap to be detached together with the swivels from a gun merely by compressing a spring button located in the head or body of the swivel and turning the swivel.
Gun swivels are usually amxed to the stock and forearm of a gun by means of screws and thus are not quickly detachable. When the gun sling or strap is removed, the ordinary swivel, not being detachable, remains projecting from the surface of the gun stock or forearm and is thus always in the way, catching the clothing or brush and bruising .the hunters hands. Furthermore, in order to remove a gun sling or strap, it is necessary with the ordinary swivel, to loosen and undo the said sling or strap and slip it free from the permanently attached gun swivels.
My invention permits the entire gun sling or strap with its two swivels, to be removed at once without in any way unloosening the sling or changing its length. It may then be reattached just as quickly and easily as it was detached, or even more so, by merely inserting the swivel into the plate on the stock or forearm and turning it a quarter-turn. It will then look positively and securely. My detachable sling swivel is interchangeable and may be quickly used on any rifle having the corresponding swivel base screwed into its stock and forearm.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side-view of a rifle showing the relative position of the gun sling or strap attached at either end of the holder;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the barrel and fore-arm, showing the fastening means for attaching the sling in disjointed or unfastened position;
Fig. 3 is a section, on an enlarged scale, taken along the line 3--3 of the Fig. 1, and showing the sling-attaching means in assembled but unlocked position;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken along the line 3-3 of the Fig. 1, but showing the slingattaching means in assembled and locked position;
Fig. 5 is a section along line 55 of the Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 shows an end-on view of the swivel body, with the locking means removed.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the gun stock 9 carrying the gun barrel 8, is provided with two grooves or indentations, substantially at each end thereof. Said grooves are closed by swivel plates I, said plates being fastened by means of screws 2 and 3, and being each provided with a longitudinal opening enlarged at its center. The swivel plates are arranged and attached onto the under surface of the gun barrel stock in a manner to be flush therewith.
The gun sling or strap X is provided at its ends 5 with swivels X and X constituting the main object of the present invention. Referring more particularly to Fig. 2, these swivels consist of a swivel body 4 provided with a swivel loop 6 passing through the doubled gun sling, thus attaching the swivel to said sling. The swivel body 4 is further provided with an axial longitudinal bore. Said bore contains a push button or shaft 20 I0 and a spring II, the purpose of which will be described more fully herein-below. One of the ends of the shaft I0 is provided with a locking device attached thereto and adapted to pass through the opening or slot in swivel plate I. A locking slot or member I2 is disposed on the upper part of swivel body 4 and directly beneath the inner surface of the locking device I, which is held in place by means of shaft Ill.
In operation, the gun stock 9 being provided with the swivel plates I, as shown more'particularly in Fig. 2, the swivels X and X may be inserted and attached to the stock 9 in the following manner. The locking member I2 is rotated .on shaft l0 until said member is directly under locking device I, spring II causing said locking device I to hold the locking member I2 in position. Thereafter, the locking device I is inserted through the slot in swivel plate I, and shaft I0 is pressed at the end opposite to that carrying the locking device I. This releases the locking member l2, which latter may then be rotated by the rotation of the swivel body 4. Such rotation causes locking member I2 to move into such a position that it may not be withdrawn out of the slot in the swivel plate I. A subsequent releasing of the shaft It causes spring II to pull locking device I against member I2, thus preventing its further rotation. Obviously the reversing of the above described steps will permit an easy and quick disengaging of the gun sling X from the stock 9 carrying the barrel 8.
What I claim is:
1. Means for removably attaching the ends of a sling to the forestock portion and butt the slot in said first named plate and adapted to attach the shaft to said first named plate by a rotation thereof.
2. A structure according to claim 1 wherein the locking means is swivelled on the spring actuated shaft passing through the swivel body, said locking means being held in non-rotating position by the plate attached to said shaft, and being released by the movement of the shaft and plate attached thereto.
MAX MEEPOS.
