Description

Feb. 9, 1937. x s BEVlLL 2,070,506
THUMB GUARD Filed March 4, 1936 ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 9, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The invention relates to a guard and more especially to a thumb guard.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a guard of this character, wherein the same can be worn on the thumb of a hand of a person when preparing or cutting fruit, vegetables or the like so as to avoid the possibility of injury to the thumb when pressing upon the knife-blade in the use thereof for the cutting of the fruit, vegetables or the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a guard of this character, wherein the same can be adjusted to fit different sizes of thumbs so that it can be carried thereby and held in a position to protect the thumb when manipulating a paring knife in the cutting, peeling and slicing of fruits, vegetables or the like, the guard being novel in construction.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a guard of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and effective in its purpose, durable, conveniently worn on the thumb of a hand, strong, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the guard constructed in accordance with the invention worn on the thumb of a hand of a person shown in the act of cutting fruit.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the blank from which the guard is made.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the guard.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the guard comprises a section of material A preferably aluminium in sheet form and this section is cut into from opposite sides to provide bendable ears 5 and 6, respectively, which protrude laterally from an intermediate body portion I, the latter having the outwardly or laterally tapered side edges 8 while the inner longitudinal edges of the ears 5 and B are angled at 9.
The body portion intermediate thereof is formed with a series of spaced parallel transversely disposed channels or grooves ID in the outer work engaging surface thereof. The said body portion 1 is dished to conform to the thumb in the shape thereof and the ears 5 and B are bent to clip the thumb H as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing so that the guard can be worn on and carried clipped to said thumb.
The purpose of the guard is to contact with the blade 12 of a knife of the paring type so as to avoid injury to the thumb due to the pressure exerted thereby upon the said blade when the knife is used for peeling, cutting or slicing fruit, vegetables or the like.
The ears 5 and 6 are bendable for adjustment thereof so that the guard can be conveniently worn on thumbs of different sizes in the use of said guard.
What is claimed is:
A guard of the kind described comprising a body made from sheet material provided with outer reversely tapered elongated ears and an intermediate relatively wide web portion disposed medially of said ears, the ears being turned upwardly and inwardly toward each other to provide terminal clips for the said web, the web being bent into concavo-convex form, the said Web having spaced parallel grooves cut into the outer face thereof.
