This invention relates in general to a hand protector for heavy duty service and is more particularly described as a palm or mit pad composed of leather or other suitable material. In handling certain articles of commerce and trade such as bricks, tile, metal casting, sheet steel, etc.,' and in performing certain-manual operations, such as scouring, and the like, it is desirable to protect the palm and fingers of a workmans hand without any neces sity of protecting the back of the hand.

The present invention therefore provides an inexpensive protector which is easily applied and removed, and is formed without ridges or projections so that it will form a smooth pad and protector for the hand of a workman.

A further object of the invention is in the provision of a protector of this kind in which the material of the main portion of the pad is composed of a single blank of material which is shaped and cut so that it may be readily formed up and the parts secured together to cooperate with a single additional piece or reinforced patch in providing an effective pad or hand protector of this kind.

A further object of the invention is in the provision of a hand protector of this general character in which the reinforcing patch for the palm is cut to form an extension that serves as a protection at the crotch or the base of the thumb.

A further object of the invention is in the provision of a hand protector ventilated at the back and at the end of the thumb so that the hand of the user will be protected in handling articles or material that maybe too hot for handling without an efiective pad.

A still further object of the invention is in the novel construction of the pad and the reinforcement therefor, and more particularly in the manner of reinforcing the parts at the joints in the crotch and extending to the rear of the protector.

Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter, the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention, in which Fig. 1 is a view of the back of a completed protector embodying the invention;

Fig. 2 is a front view of the protector;

Fig. 3 is a perspective of one side with the thumb sheath drawn back to show the crotch extension in place; and

Fig. 4 shows a blank from which the main portion of the protector is made.

A protector pad of this kind is preferably designed to be cut from a single piece of material, usually thin leather, havinga thumb stall portion 5 integral with a palm and finger covering portion 6 and separated therefrom by a cut I. In the present instance I provide an extension 8 5 at the other side of the thumb stall from the slit or cut 7, with a short cut 9 at the base of the thumb portion, and adjacent edge l0 extending at an angle to the thumb portion and also at an angle to the outwardly rounded extremity H 10 which forms the blank. This single'blank when the thumb stall is formed is all that is required to form the mit or body portion of the hand protector, which is adapted to be held on the hand by curling over theedges and connecting l5 them by a back strap l2.

Another feature of the invention consists in a reinforcing palm pad or patch 13 which is applied to the pahn of the hand protector and has an extension M for the inner side of the thumb and a crotch extension or tongue I5 to extend at the side of the pad, reinforcing the crotch at the base of the thumb stall and forming an attaching means for the seam at the back of the pad.

In forming the body portion of the hand protector from the blank shown in Fig. 4 the opposite sides of the thumb extension 5 are brought together to form an open thumb stall I6 connected at one side by stitches or staples 11, the opposite edges l8 and IQ of the outwardly rounded portion are curled backwardly at the rear and the extension 8 at the base of the thumb is brought up into alignment with the edge formed by the slit 1 to which it is attached by staples 2D and the cross piece I2 is attached to the opposite edges l8 and 19 by staples 2!. The protector pad or patch I3 is applied to the palm of the hand pad by staples 22 and the crotch extension 15 integral with this patch is. extended over the crotch and applied by staples 23 to both sides of the extension 8 and the curled side l9 so that this crotch extension not only reinforces the crotch at the place where reinforcement is most needed but also it provides a table for additionally securing the extension 8 and the curled side l9 together.

In this form of the invention the body portion of the hand padis made of one piece of material and the patch of another piece of material, whereby the complete article is made of two pieces only. There is no separate gusset either in the crotch or at the back of the protector, and the entire structure is made with the least waste of material in cutting the blanks of which the 5 protectors are made. With this construction and method of making the mit pad a smooth protected crotch is provided, the entire protector fits smoothly upon the hand, and there are, no obpectionable projections which would irritate the hand or'mar the surface to which the protector is applied. The staples commonly used for stitching the parts together are of fiat wire with the ends bent inwardly into the material so that they provide a smooth non-irritating means of attachment. Although sufiicient staples are shown to attach the parts together, additional staples may be applied to the pahn of the mit pad for reinforcing it for special kinds of service.

By making a reinforced crotch of this kind in which the crotch piece is an extension of the re-- inforcing patch of the protector pad, a smooth joint is made, additional protection is provided against undue wear or cutting in the crotch when handling sharp edged metal strips, wires and other materials which tend to wear or irritate the hand at that place.

1. A hand protector comprising a body portion or pad with curled sides and a thumb stall, and including a reinforcing patch, the body portion or pad being made up of a single sheet of material in the form of an oblong blank cut awayat one side of the lower end thereof leaving a triangular shaped portion, said blank being provided with an inwardly extending slit spaced from the edge leftv by the cut away portion to define that portion of the blank which is folded upon itself to form the thumb stall, said triangular shaped portion at the lower end of the blank cooperating with and attached to the upper portion of the blank at the other side of the folded thumb stall for forming or completing one of the curled sides of the hand protector or pad; together with the reinforcing patch and means for securing it to the pad, and a strap connecting the curled over sides at the back of the hand protector.

2. A hand protector or pad made up of a single sheet of material in the form of an oblong blank cut away at one side of the lower end thereof and having an inwardly extending slit spaced from an edge left by the cut away portion to define that portion of the blank which is folded upon itself to form the thumb stall, and a triangular shaped portion at the lower end of the blank beyond the inner end of the portion forming the thumb stall, said triangular shaped portion being folded over with the thumb stall and attached to crotch between the thumb'stall and adjacent finger engaging side portion of the pad to protect the hand of the user at this point and extended with the aforementioned joint to reinforce the same in connection with the means for securing the patch and tongue to the pad; together with a strap extending between the curled sides of the pad at the back of the hand protector.
