Claims.
Thisinvention relates to cases, such as toilet kits and the like. A
The principal objects ofthe invention are to provide a case which is so designed that the top 5 or cover may be swung` into an upright position and supported in-such position without the use of means other than those forming an integral part of the structure of the case, and to provide a case which is of simple design and of attractive appearance, which is of strong and durable construction, and which may be quickly and conveniently set up and packed.
Furtherobjects will be apparent from a con-- Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a case constructed in accordance with the present invention;
, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the case;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on` the line 3 3 2o'ofliighand Fig. 4 isia fragmentary section on the line 4- 4 of Fig. 1. f
The embodiment chosen for illustration lvcomprises a base' or bottom, designated by the numeral I, and a cover or top section, designated by the numeral -2, the base I being designed to hold sundry toilet articles, such as a hair brush, shaving outfit, etc., and the top section likewise being provided with means for holding other articles, such as a mirror, shoe horn, le,etc.. as shown vin Fig. 1. The base comprises an inner stiening member 5 (Fig. 4) which may be a piece of heavy fiber board -or the like relatively vstiif sheet material, an inner facing 6 which extends over the inner surface ofthe stiifening member 5, the rear wall I0 and the cover 2, and an outer facing I which likewise extends over the outer surface of the stiffening member 5 and the corresponding surfaces of the wall I0 and cover 2, o the facings Ii and 1 preferably being of leather or other sheet material `having an attractive iinish. The front 'and side marginal portions of the bottom I are provided Vwith a continuous lip which, in eifect, provides a part of the sideand 5 front walls and,`as here'shown, the lip consists of a Stringer. 8 which carries a. series of fasteners 9, the strlnger 8 being secured to the bot tom .by a row' of stitches 'I2which' pass through the inturned edges of the outer facing 1 and `50 underlying parts, as shown in Fig. 1.
The rear wall I0 adjoins the rear edge of th bottom I and comprises an inner' stiifener I6 whose inner edge. is spaced from the stiiener 5, as shown atFig. 4. The inner and outer facings l and 1, whichencase the stiifener I6, provide l Application February 2o, 19st, serial ive-64,829
a hinge or flexible joint I1 which supports the rear wall I0 for pivotal movement about the rear edge of the bottom I. The top or cover 2 is p ivotally supported4 by the rear wall I0 and comprises a stiifener 4I8 which is spaced from the .5
stiifener I6 of the rear Wall, and the inner and outer facings 6 and I provide a hinge or flexible `joint I9 which supports the cover for pivotal movement about therear edge of the wall Ill. y
The side walls 20 and 2I and the front wall 22. 10 are carried by the cover and comprise continuous inner and outer ,exible strips of leather or the likesheet material 23 and 24 (Fig. 3), the top edges of the strip being secured beneath the invturned edges of the outer facing 'I lby a row of 15 stitches 25. The ends of the side walls 20 and 2| are turnedfinwardly upon therear'wall I0 so as to form the inwardly extendingr DO Cket v26, as shown in Fig. 3. Gussetsor the like reinforcing strips 21 overlie the inturnedends of'the'side walls and the gussets andends of the side walls are firmly secured to the rear Wall I0 by -stitches 28.
The'top and the front and side walls provide, in
relative tothe plane of the bottom member, as 35 shown by the dot and dash lines of Fig. 2.
A Stringer 29 carrying a series of fasteners 30 adapted 'to interlock with the fasteners 8, ex-
tends from the rear edge of the side wall 20 along thetop edge of the front wall to the rear'edge of 40 the side wall 2I, this Stringer being secured between the strips`23 and 24 by a row of stitches 3l A slider 32 (Fig. 1) is carried by the stringers, the slider having a'pull v33 which' is so' arranged that when 'the cover is closed it may be 4drawn 45 from one end of the rear wall to the other, thereby locking the case in closed position. When `the case is open the slider is received and retained in the pocket 26 in the left-hand side (Fig. 1) of the case and when the case is closedthe slider may be drawn around into and retained' in the pocket'28 on the opposite side of the case.
It will be noted Athat 'when the cover of afcase constructed in accordance with the present invention is open, thebottom part is readily accessible ferent articles carried thereby may be quickly removed and replaced and the entire case may be set up and repacked quickly and conveniently. It will be further noted that when the case is set up, as shown in Fig. 1, the rear wall provides a support for the cover and the side walls, and the sidewalls alone are effective to maintain it in open position.
While I have shown and described one desirable embodiment of the invention, it is to be under- /stood that this disclosure is for the purpose of illustration, and that various changes in shape, proportion and arrangement of parts, as well as the substitution of equivalent elements for those herein shown and described, may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set fo'4 th in the appended claims.
I claim:

4. A case comprising a bottom member, a top member, a rear wall pivotally joined at one edge to the rear edge of said top member and pivotally joined at its opposite edge to the rear edge of the bottom member, said rear wall providing a pivotal support for the ltop member when in open position, `flexible front and side walls secured at their upper edges to the top member, the rear ends of the side walls being secured to the rear wall so as to hold the top member in an upstanding position when the case is open so that the rear wall is folded back into substantially the same plane as the bottom member.
5. A case comprisi xga bottom member, a top member, a rear wall pivotally joined at one edge to the rear edge of said top member and pivotally joined at its opposite edge to the rear edge of the bottomy member, said rear wall providing a pivotal support for the top member when in open position, flexible front and side walls secured at their upper edges to the top member, the rear ends of the side walls being secured to the rear wall so as to provide means'for supporting thel top member in an upstanding position; when the case is open and the rear wall is folded back into substantially the same plane as the bottom member, the bottom member having an upstanding lip registering with the free edges of the side and front walls and, in'eect, forming a part thereof when vthe case is closed, and interlocking fastening members carried by said lip and by the side and front walls. v IRVING SCHWARTZ.
