Description

Sept. 29, 1936.
M. M. Goss UNDERGARMENT FiledMarch 3, 1936 Patented Sept. 29, 1936 UNITED STATES smear OFFICE Application March 3,
1 Claim.
My invention relates generally to undergarments, and particularly to an. undergarment having a pants portion with; the legs thereof formed and connected to the body portion thereof in a manner to positively prevent'chafing of the upper part of the inner side of the thighs of'the wearer, and an important object of the invention is to provide arrangements of this character suitable for incorporation in different forms of undergarments, such as mens and womens as well as childrens' shorts, step-ins, bloomers, and the like.
Another important objectof myinvention is to provide arrangements of the character indicated above which involve anabsorbent, nonchafing element which is in contact with the upper portion of the inner side of the thigh, and which acts by absorbing perspiration, to reduce skin conditions which might otherwise result in chafing.
Another important object of my invention is to provide in an undergarmentof the character indicated above a construction of body portion and leg portion having connection therebetween whereby binding and frictional engagement with the upper part of the inner side of the thigh of the wearer is positively eliminated.
Other important objects of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description in connection with the drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawing:-
Figure 1 is a general perspective view of an 5 undergarment constructed in accordance with the present invention and having portions thereof cut away to disclose the absorbent member at one side thereof.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of one of the ab- 40 sorbent members.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 generally designates a garment constructed in accordance with the present invention which is shown only for illustrative pur- 45 poses and not to have the elfect of limiting incorporation of the invention, and comprises the body portion 6 which includes the front portion 1 and the back portion 8 with openings 9 and H] at opposite sides adapted to be partly closed by attaching the buttonholes II to the buttons l2 so as to reduce the size of the waist of the body portion to fit the figure of the wearer. If desired, an expansible elastic arrangement l3 may be incorporated in the back portion 8 to make the garment fit snugly at the waist and 1936, Serial No. 66,934
to draw the same into conformance with the figure, of the wearer.
The front portion 1- comprises the front halves Mand l5of the respective legs l6 and H and, thefront'crotch engaging the portion l8. The. back body portion of the garment comprises the back portions l9 and 2B'of the legs 5 and I! and the rear crotch engaging portion 2| and the upper intermediate portion 22. It is to be noted that the garment can be made of any' suitable material.
The front leg portions are sewed as indicated by the numeral 23 at their laterally outward edges to the rear leg portions and the laterally inward edges of these portions are'sewed as indicated' by the numeral 24.
The front crotch engaging portion I8 is generally rectangular in form and has its lower edge sewed as indicated by the numeral 25 to the lower end of the rear crotch engaging por-p tion 2|, While the upper end of the rear crotch engaging portion 2| is sewed as indicated by the numeral 25 to the lower edge of the intermediate 7 portion 22.
The laterally inward edges of the' rear leg. parts l9 and have their upper portions sewed as indicated by the respective numerals 21 and 28 to the opposite side edges of the intermediate portion 22.
The side edges of the combined front and rear crotch engaging portions l8 and 2| are sewed as indicated by the numerals 29 to the edges of openings 30 formed in the laterally inward sides of the upper part of the legs, these openings being oval in form and having their lower edges arranged at such an elevation that the junctions of the legs and the crotch engaging portions come into position high at the inner sides of the thighs of the wearer and close to the juncture of the thighs of the wearer with the body of the wearer, so that there is no stress and binding of the seams across any portion of the upper part of the inner sides of the thighs of the wearer, which in certain garments causes the objectionable chafing which it is the object of the present device to eliminate.
The transverse width of the crotch engaging portions is sufficient to adequately cover the body between the legs of the garment without unduly pressing or binding upon the body, while permitting the junctures of the garment legs with the garment body, particularly with the crotch engaging portions thereof, to seat comfortably and non-chafingly in the cleft which exists between the upper extremity of the inner side of the thigh of the wearer and the body of the wearer between the thighs. It is to be noted that present garments have the junctions of the legs with the body portion thereof lying much below this region of the body, so as to bind and. rub the upper inner sides of the thighs of the wearer and cause the objectionable chafing.
Besides the placement of the junction seams between the legs and the body portions of the garment of my invention, I provide additional elimination of the causes of chafing by installing along the seams 29 the upwardly projecting flap 3| which is a portion of the corresponding leg of the garment and which rises above the junction seam mentioned above. To the laterally outward side of this flap 3| I attach a crescentshaped absorbent pad or guard 32 the curved and tapered form of which is clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, and I sew the lower edge of this shield 32 as indicated by the numeral 33 to a point quite adjacent the junction seam 29 as clearly shown in Figure 1, and I also sew the upper edges of the flap 3| and of the shield 32 together as indicated by the numeral 34 and in so sewing attach the comforting strip 35 which overlies the upper edges of the shield and flap as clearly indicated in Figure 1; so that there is produced a shielding element composed of the flap 3| and the shield 32 which is positively held in the cleft which exists between the upper extremity of the inner side of the thigh of the wearer and pendant portions of the body which lie between the thighs. The upper edge of the discussed formations composed by the elements 3|, 32 and 35 is of such a contour and formation that the same lies in close conformity to the contour of the body, and not being subject to motion in walking or stooping by the wearer, does not make any rubbing contact with the wearer. Where in certain motions of the wearer some motion may be imparted to the member mentioned, there will be no injurious rubbing, particularly because of the presence of the absorbent shield 32 which by absorbing perspiration and other excretions will keep the skin dry and prevent the same getting into a condition which would enable the same to become easily chafed.
It is to be observed that the junction 29 of the inner sides of the legs of the garment with the crotch engaging portions does not by the formation and arrangement thereof present any sharp or protruding edges which could chafe the legs or body of the wearer, and that these junctions cannot work into positions to effect chafing or binding, and that the elements composed by the parts 3|, 32 and 35 when properly positioned on the wearer have the tendency to prevent theinner sides of the legs of the garment from creeping up in any position or motion of the wearer.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in the materials, and in the structure and arrangement of the parts, within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the subjoined claim.
What is claimed is:-
An undergarment of the character described comprising a pair of leg portions and a body portion, said body portion being interposed between the leg portions to space the legs apart and said legs each having an open edge along their inner upper sides to which the opposite side edges of the body portions are attached to form a crotch portion between the legs, the marginal areas of said leg openings extending above the juncture of the edges of the crotch engaging portion to provide a pair of upstanding strips for entering the crotch of the wear and absorbent shields co-extensive with said strips and secured to the outer surfaces thereof, the upper edges of said shields being arranged to be positioned within the crotch with said absorbent elements contacting the inner sides of the legs throughout the entire area of the crotch.
