Claims.
This invention relates to a container for cigarettes, and more particularly to a carton or package for individual vending; an object of the invention being to provide a package or holder 5 which is cheap to manufacture and convenient to operate in use, said holder or carton being formed mainly from a single sheet of paper, cardboard or other suitable flexible and bendable material, folded to form a box-like structure having a compartment of a size and shape suitable for receiving an ordinary cigarette package or a plurality of loose cigarettes, or cigarettes in any other package form, and having an integral hinged cover for convenient access to the contents of the package and provided with side flanges and an end flange, together forming when open, an open box-like cover adapted to shield a cigarette while being lighted and to form a tight end closure for the package. A further object is to provide such packages suitable for individual vending, with a chamber for the reception of a limited number of matches, at least one for each cigarette in the package, and which chamber is provided with means for projecting the matches therefrom and is preferably formed by the same sheet or blank forming the holder, and to provide certain other new and useful features in the form, construction and arrangement of the structure, all as hereinafter set forth and 30 more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein;

Cigarettes are usually put up in sealed packages comprising an inner wrapper enclosing the 15 cigarettes, and an outer wrapper of comparatively heavy paper tightly sealed. The buyer, in order to take a cigarette from the package, must tear it open and there is no means for again closing the package when he puts it in his pocket. 20 The package is therefore left open so that the cigarettes dry out and may fall from the package or the tobacco fall out in the pocket. Further the paper or other material from which the outside wrapper or body of the package is made, has comparatively little stiffness and is easily wrinkled and broken down so that it affords little protection for the contents after once being opened.
In the present instance, it is proposed to provide the package with an end closure formed integral with the body of the package and of the same material, and connected thereto at one side and reinforced to stiffen it, so that the package may be quickly and conveniently opened, and after the removal of a cigarette, may 'be as quickly and easily closed to protect the contents in the pocket, and to stiffen the package against being easily crushed, injuring the cigarettes.
Further, it is proposed to provide within the 40 package or cover, a chamber or compartment for matches so that a supply of matches suiiicient for lighting the several cigarettes in the package will be vended with each package, this chamber being formed when the package is formed up and from the same material as that from which the container is formed, thus adding but little to the cost of manufacture thereof, and further reinforcing the container which is preferably, together. with its cover and such reinforced chamher, formed from a sheet of paper, cardboard, or
.other thin, light and flexible material, blanked out so that it may be quickly folded into container form with the added match chamber and integral cover.
Further, the cover is preferably'given a box-like form with wide side flanges to fit closely over the sides of the body of the package to substantially seal the open end of the body after the package has been opened and the cover closed, and so that this box-like cover after being turned back on its hinge connection with the upper edge of the body, will provide a recess into which the end of the cigarette may be inserted to protect the match against being blown out in lighting the cigarette.
The container thus formed is preferably of a size and shape substantially the same as the ordinary commercial cigarette package now on the market, and, if found desirable, may be made to receive and hold such package after the package has been opened, but preferably, the cigarettes will be vended in this container, they being enclosed in a thin moisture proof wrapping and placed in this container by the manufacturer of the cigarettes.
The form of package shown in Figs. 1 to 5 of the drawings, comprises a body A, a supplemental match chamber B along one vertical side of said body, a cover C and a supplemental or inside flap or cover D, all formed from a single sheet or blank of suitable thin material, preferably such as heavy paper or the like and as shown in Fig. 5, the portion l of the blank forming one layer of a double dividing wall separating the interior of the body A from the match chamber B,the portion 2 forming the front wall of the body, the portion 3 forming the side edge wall of the body opposite 'the wall I, the portion 4 forming one layer of the back wall of the body, and the portion 5 being laid over and glued or otherwise secured fiat upon the portion I to form the double dividing wall. Integral with the portion 5, is the portion 6 which forms the front wall of the chamber B, the portion 1 forms the vertical side wall of said chamber and the portion 9 forms the back wall of said chamber and is continued as at l0 to overlap the portion 4 and form the double back wall of the body A, said portions being glued or otherwise secured together in flat contact. The walls of the body and those of the match box B are thus formed from one continuous strip which is scored or otherwise marked at the bends or corners of the body and box to provide for ready bending.
The same blank may, as shown, be formed with lateral extensions to form the covers C and D, the portion 3 being formed with an end extension 3a forming the top wall of the cover C and having lateral extensions 3b to form side flanges on this cover of considerable width to lie outside the front and back walls of body A when said cover is turned upon its connection with the upper end of wall 3 to bring its top wall 3a over the upper open end of said body, the free end of wall 311 being formed with an integral portion 30 to form an end wall for the cover, said portion 3c having lateral tabs 3d to be folded inward and glued to said flanges 3b for forming an open box-like structure to serve as a hinged cover for the body and into which the end of a cigarette removed from the body, may be inserted while being lighted by means of a match removed from the box B by means of a flexible strip 9a formed integral at one end, with the end of the portion 9 of the blank which forms the back wall of the box B, said strip being depressed into the open upper end of the box to extend downward therein beneath the matches in the box with its free end projecting over the upper edge of the front wall of the box where it may be grasped to pull it up and thus lift the matches S0 that they may be conveniently grasped and removed, one at a time, when needed.
The inside cover D may also be formed from an integral part of the blank by providing a portion 8 the end of which is integralwith the end of portion 1 and forms one layer of the double wall of the cover D, this portion 8-being folded upon itself and the layers glued together, to form the double wall of this inside cover D which is adapted, when turned upon its integral end connection with the wall I, to lie flat upon the upper end of the body and between the flanges 3b of the outside cover.
As shown in Fig. 1, an ordinary cigarette package ll with its upper end torn off to expose the upper ends of theicigarettes I2, is shown in the body A, and in Fig. l, matches l3 are shown set on end within the box B upon the lifting strip 911 with the upper ends of the matches below the plane of the open upper end of the box, so that by a pull upon the projecting end of the strip, the matches will be lifted to a position where they may be readily grasped.
The lower end of the body A and box B is closed by providing tabs l4 on the lower ends of the blank portions l to ID inclusive, which tabs are turned inwardly after the walls are formed, are overlapped, one upon another as shown in Fig. 3, and are then securely glued together.
The modified construction shown in Figs. 6 to 11 inclusive is similar to that above described, in that it is formed from a single sheet blank to form the body E, inside or supplemental cover F, outside cover G and match box H, said box being formed as an integral part of cover G instead of a part of the body as in the previously described construction, and the inside cover as integral with one layer of the back wall of the body. As shown in Fig. 11, the portions l5 to l9 inclusive form successively one layer I5 of the back wall of the body, the side or end wall IS, the front wall II, the other side or end wall l8, and the second layer IQ of the back wall, said portion l9 being formed with an integral upper end portion l9a forming the inside cover F. To form an end wall for the i box H, a portion l6a is formed integral with the upper end of portions l6 and a continuation lib of this portion forms the top wall of'the box. Integral with the side edges of portion lib, are
portions l6c and lGd which form the side walls of the box H and are also of a width to form the side walls or side flanges of the cover G which flanges are formed double by providing additional portions Hie and I6) to fold upon and be glued to a part of each portion I60, Hid and thus form double walled flanges for the cover G. To form a double top wall for the cover, which wall also forms a bottom wall for the box H, portions I69 and lBh are provided integral with the lateral side edges of the portions We and I6 and bent inwardly in overlapping position with their contacting sides glued together. To form a double end wall for the cover G and connecting the ends of the flanges at the free end of said cover, the portions l6c and l6d are formed with end tabs I61 which are folded inward, overlapped and glued together, one of said tabs having a lateral portion I67 to fold inwardly upon the portion I69 and be glued thereto to strengthen the cover structure which may therefore and by reason of the double wall construction, be formed of comparatively thin paper or the like and yet be sumciently stiff to resist crushing in use, thus making the use of a hinged cover upon a package of this character, feasible.
The match box H may also be provided with a match projecting strip 20 similar to the strip 9a, which strip 20 may also serve as a closure for the open end of said box, by tucking the free end of the strip back into the box over the matches therein, and the lower end of the body E is closed by inturning, overlapping and gluing the lower ends of the portions IE to l9 inclusive as shown in Fig. 8, which form the walls of said body.
The construction shown in Figs. 12 to 18 inclusive is very similar to the constructions previously described except that the blank is so formed that when formed up, the outside cover is hinge connected to the upper edge of the back wall of the body instead of an end wall, and the match box is formed from a separate blank and secured within the cover, in this construction the body I being formed by a series of portions folded along proper lines to form the corners of the body, the portion 2| forming one layer of a double vertical end wall, the succeeding portions 22, 23 and 24'forming the front, end and back wall respectively, and the portion 25 overlapping and glued to the portion 2| to together form the double end wall. Integral with the end of the portion 2|, is the portion 2 la which forms the inside cover or flap J, and integral with the upper end of the portion 24, is a narrow portion 2411 which forms a narrow wall at the open side of the cover K for connecting said cover to the upper edge of the back wall 24 of the body I and to form an upward extension of said wall when the cover is closed, this portion 240. being integral with succeeding portions 24b and 240 to form reof 241), and the end tabs 24g on the ends of the portion 24c, the tabs 24d being folded inwardly at right angles to wall 24b, the tabs 24g then overlapped with tabs 24d and the tabs 24c bent inwardly to lie against the inner surface of 24d, all of said tabs being glued, face to face to form a rectangular cover with wide end and front flanges to engage the outer surfaces of the upper ends of the walls 2|, 22 and 23 and form a light hinged cover for the open end of the body. A match box L is secured within the extension of the cover formed by the portion 24a, which box may be formed in any suitable manner with a hinged cover, as from a suitable blank shown in Fig. 18, or formed in any other suitable manner, the box being preferably formed with end tabs L by means of which it may be conveniently secured within thecover K upon the wall 24b thereof where it is accessible upon the turning back of said cover, as illustrated in Fig. 12.
A further modified form of carton for the purpose described, is shown in perspective in Fig. 19, this being formed from a sheet blank in a manner similar to the other'forms described, the match box of compartment M being located at the lower end of the body N, the upper end of said body being formed with a flap integral at one side with the upper end edge of one side wall of said body.
In the several constructions shown, the body of' the package is of a size and shape suitable to receive an ordinary package of cigarettes or a like number of cigarettes placed therein when the package is made up and the package is formed with a match holding chamber in such a manner as to not materially increase the size of the package which is therefore inv a form to be vended.
as a unit and a very convenient holder is provided with a suitable cover or closure which may be quickly opened to expose the cigarettes and matches ready for use, or may be as quickly closed to protect the'contents and to form a reinforcement for the package when carried in the pocket. While several specific forms have been shown, yet the essential features of the construction are shown in each, and other changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims, and such changes are contemplated.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is:
1. A. cigarette package comprising a casing formed from a single blank of thin flexible material folded to form a cigarette chamber and a match chamber having certain walls of double thickness, both chambers being open at the same end of the package, said blank having portions folded to form an outside closure to embrace the open end of both of said chambers, said blank having a portion connecting said outside cover to an end of a wall of said body and forming a hinge connection, said blank having portions folded to form an inside cover to fold beneath said outside cover to reinforce the open end of the body when said cover is in closed position.
2. A blank for forming a cigarette package, said blank comprising a series of portions arranged in parallelism and arranged to be folded along their adjacent sides to form a body providing a cigarette chamber and a match chamber at one side thereof with a dividing wall between said chambers and said chambers open at the upper end of the package, said blank being also formed with portions integral with some of the portions forming the body and adapted to be folded, one to extend fiat across the open end of said chambers and the other to form an :outside closure having side flanges to embrace the upper open end of the body and close said chambers.
3. A package for cigarettes including a 'body said blank having a series of portions arranged side by side to be folded to form the four walls of said body, a continuation of said blank forming a series of portions to be folded along the side lines thereof to provide a rectangular match chamber at one side of the body forming the cigarette chamber with theupper end of the match chamber open at the top of the body, said blank being also formed with a portion integral with the end of one of the portions forming one wall of the body and adapted to be folded to form a cover for embracing the open upper end of the body and to close the upper end of said match chamber, and another portion of the blank thin flexible material and a match chamber alongside the body formed by a continuation of the material forming the walls of the body and a cover for closing the open upper end of the body and match chamber, said cover being integral with one wall of the body to hinge connect the body and cover, said cover being formed with integral side flanges and a connecting end flange of extended width to embrace the upper open 0 end of the body and of said match chamber, and
a single straight flexible strip of a width equal to the width of the bottom of said match chamber and connected at one end to an end of one wall of the match chamber at the open end thereof to extend downward within said chamber along said wall, across the bottom of said chamber beneath matches therein and upward against the opposite side wall with its free end projecting from the upper end of said chamber.
