Description

NTTED 4sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
SAML. U. KING, OF WINDSOR, VERMONT.
DEVICE FOR ATTAGI-IING BITS T0 BRACES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,495, dated June 8, 1858'.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL U. KING, of Windsor, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented an Improvement in Bit-Stocks or Auger-Handles, and do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l, is a side View, and Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of a bit-stock and auger containing my improvement my said invention having reference to the ixation of the tool or auger in the stock or handle.
The nature of my invention consists in a peculiar application and arrangement of a projection on the tool and a wedge and spring to the tool socket.
In the drawings, A, denotes the bit-stock, or handle furnished with a socket a, for the reception of the tool, a longitudinal section of said socket being shown in Fig. 3. The head of the auger or tool, B, has the form of a fr ustum of a quadrangular pyramid, and is furnished with a small projection, Z), extending from it as shown in Fig. 2. wedge, C, extends through the socket and is fastened or jointed to one end of a spring D, whose other end is attached to the bitstock,
the whole being arranged as shown in the drawings. By the action of the spring, the wedge is forced forward in the socket and against one side of the pyramidal head of the auger and so as to press the head closely against the side of the socket and cause the projection b, to constitute a stop to prevent the tool from being drawn out of the socket. By pressing the wedge backward, the tool may be removed from the socket.
For expeditiously connecting the tool with the handle or stock or disconnecting the two, as well as for holding the two firmly together, my improvement will be found to be not only very effective, but of much advantage.
I claim- The mode of fixing the tool or auger in its handle or bit-stock, viz, by the projection, I), on the tool in conection with the wedge O, and the spring D, applied to the handle or stock A, and the socket, a, thereof substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature.
SAMUEL U. KING. Witnesses:
WM. W. HOWARD, CARLOS OooLIDGE.
