Claims.

This invention concerns a polish compact and more particularly a polish compact comprising a polish container, a cover for the polish container, an applicator and 'a polisher, in associated, dependent relation with each other.

Inthe past polishes and cleaners, such as are used in the care and the'protection of leather goods, metalware and the like, have been marketed in containers that serve solely as a means for enclosing the polishes and cleaners and that are commonly equipped with special radially outwardly projecting cover removing devices, such as levers and the like. The application and the burnishing of the polish and the use of the cleaners have been accomplished commonly by a plurality of brushes, cloths and the like, that have been most easily available at the time the Work'was to be done with slight attention given to their adaptability to the particular work to be done.

The present invention concerns a polish compact comprising an assembly of interdependent polishing equipment that embodies all of the necessary articles of proper quality for accomplishing the best possible results for the polishing of the particular article for which the polish compact is intended.

An' object of the present invention is to provide a pocket or handbag polish compact that embodies all of the necessary polishing or cleaning equipment in interdependent relation with each other and of proper quality, in a convenient and readily usable form.

Another object is to provide a pocket form of polish compact that is adapted for providing conveniences that are impossible in the use of conventional modern equipment.

Another object is to provide a polish compact that has substantially smooth outside surfaces whereby no part of the compact may catch on articles or have other objectionable inconveniences to the carrying, storing or handling of the compact.

Another object is to provide a polish 'com pact that embodies all of the necessary polishing equipment and that is adapted for being carried in a gentleman's pocketor in a ladys handbag;

for use in emergency cases, such as when traveling. by motor and the like.

A further object is to provide a polish com-- pact that is substantially free from the liability of soiling the hands or other objects with'which the compactma'y be contacted.

Another object is to provide a polish compact that comprises a -'polish"container and a polish container cover with means for. simply and easily removing thepolish container cover from the polish container. 7

Another object is to provide a polish compact that comprises an applicator pad with applicator tabs that serve in the removal of the polish container cover and that continue the air-tight seal between the polish container and the container cover that prevents the admission of air into the interior of the polish container. 10

Another object is to provide a polish compact that comprises a polisher forwhich the closed polish container formsa convenient hand grip for the polisher during its use. A,

A further object is to provide a polish compact that may be made in a variety of forms, shapes and sizes for adaptation to any particular market, use or novelty. I v V I 7 Another object is to provide a polish compact that is of simple and easily manufactured construction and assembly. p

Another object is toprovidea polish compact with a cover that may be removed from the polish container by a-simple and easy operation and that is conducive to the economical and easy packing of a plurality of the compacts in shipping containers. V I

With the above and other objects in view, which will be readily apparent from the following detailed description, the present invention consists in a simple construction and vcombination of parts which will be understood readily by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains. q

The preferred form of compact comprises a polish container l and a container cover 2, that, when in assembled condition, enclose a conventional polish, paste, jelly or a cleaner, on which a polish applicator pad 3 is positioned and on the outside of which a polishing pad 4 is removably mounted by suitable means, such as by the continuous polishing pad strap 5.

The side walls of the polish container are shaped to provide the tab receiving recesses 6 that are preferably positioned on diametrically opposite sides of the polish container. The tab receiving recesses 6 are preferably of suficient depth radially of the polish container for the accommodation of a finger tip and consistent with the preservation of a satisfactory air seal to prevent the drying out of the polish or the cleaner positioned in the polish container. The tab receiving recesses 5 in the polish container are preferably disposed upwardly of the bottom of the polish or cleaner container in such a manner that the bottom of the polish container has a substantially uninterrupted circumference.

The polish container cover 2 is shaped to provide a closure member for the polish container with a peripherally downwardly depending rim that terminates in a cover edge I and that preferably makes frictional engagement with and overlies to some extentthe upper part of the upstanding sides of the polish container.

The polish applicator pad 3 preferably consists of a closely woven, compact, wool felt material. The sheet of substantially impervious material 8, is preferably interposed between the Wool felt applicator pad and the overlying flexible sheet of finger pocket forming material 9, that are secured together adjacent the peripheries of each by suitable means, such as by the stitching Ill. The impervious material prevents the solvents contained in the polish or in the cleaner from contacting the fingers when the fingers are positioned within the pocket formed by the impervious material 8 and the pocket forming material 9 during the application of the polish or the cleaner. The closed side of the finger pocket provides a surface against which the tips of the fingers may press without permitting contact between the fingers and the polish and provides a suitable finger compartment during the application of the polish to the article to be polished.

The applicator tabs l I are formed preferably continuously with the finger pocket forming ma.- terial 9 and extend preferably diametrically from either side of the polish applicator. The applicator tabs H are of suitable width, thickness and compactness to conform closely to the tab receiving recesses 6 in such a manner as to substantially close the aperture between the upper extremity of the tab receiving recesses and the inner surface of the polish container cover and to thereby seal the polish or the cleaner contained in the polish container from the drying properties of the air. The applicator tabs I are of sufficient length to overlie the cover edge 1 of the polish container cover and to afford ample protection to the finger tip as the polish container cover is pressed upwardly and away from the polish container. The applicator tabs also are preferably of sufiicient length. to provide a finger and a thumb grip on their free ends so that a straight upwardly directed pull on the applicator tabs will release the polish container cover from contact with the polish container.

The polishing pad 4 consists of a suitable polishing material, such as wool felt and the like, and in contour preferably conforms substantially with the polish container and the polish container cover. The polishing pad 4 is secured by stitching or by other suitable means to the polishing pad strap 5 that preferably extends diametrically across the polishing pad.

The polishing pad strap 5 is preferably a continuous band that may be non-extensible or may be elastic, as desired, with the ends secured together by suitable means to provide a substantially fiat connection, such as by the stitching ID. The ends of the polishing pad strap may be releasably secured together by a substantially flat form, of releasable connecting means, if desired,

that will not space the compacts from each other an objectionable distance when they are stacked in packing cases.

A modified form of applicator is shown in Fig.

7 of the accompanying drawing wherein the polish applicator pad 3 and the impervious material 8 are secured together with the stitching l0 which also secores the applicator strap l2 that is of substantially uniform width and is disposed diametrically across the modified form of polish applicator pad. The applicator strap l2 extends preferably continuously beyond the peripheries of the applicator pad and the impervious material to form the applicator tabs [3. The applicator tabs in either form of applicator may be sepa- 2 rate from the applicator strap and may be secured thereto by stitching and the like, if desired.

The form of applicator that is shown in Fig. 7 of the drawing is used by positioning the fingers of the hand against the impervious material 8 and beneath the portion of the applicator strap [2 that overlies the impervious material 8.

The rectangular form of polish compact that is shown in Fig. 8 of the drawing, comprises a polish container I 4 that has the tab receiving recesses l5 formed in the sides thereof for the accommodation of the applicator tabs l6 and that is closed by the polish container cover IT. The polish container l4 carries the polishing pad I8 rigidly secured thereto, preferably to the bottom outside surface of the polish container, by a conventional metal bonding adhesive, such as shellac, or by a mechanical bond, such as rivets or the like.

In using the rectangular form of polish compact the cover I! is removed from the polish container I4 by the insertion of a finger tip beneath the applicator tab I6 and by exerting an upwardly directed pressure, or as otherwise described for the removal of the polish container cover 2.

The polish applicator connected with the applicator tab l6 may be the types of applicator that are shown in Figs. 6 and '7 of the drawing, and round or :square, as desired, and serves to apply and spread polish on the article to be The rectangular form of the polish compact is admirably adapted for use where large areas, such as on mens shoes, are to be polished. The circular form of polish compact is more properly adapted for use on smaller areas to be polished, such as for use on womens shoes.

The rectangular form of polish container has the advantage of being a more suitable hand gripping article during the polishing operation than most other shapes of polisher and also adapts itself readily to a reciprocating motion longitudinally of the polish container during the act of burnishing a surface to develop a suitable luster thereon.

Small compacts, such as are disclosed herein, are suitable for being carried in a ladys handbag and the like, and may take any of a variety of shapes and forms, for purposes of creating a novel and an original article for stimulating the demand for a unique polishing compact.

It is to be understood that the particular forms of the articles that are shown and described as being combined to make up the present compact, and the particular adaptation and uses of the compact articles, are presented for purposes of ing from the invention, as defined in the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. A polish compact, comprising a polish container having an upstanding side wall, a closure means removably engaging said polish-container and terminating downwardly in a cover edge, a tab receiving recess in said side wall of said polish container, a polish applicator removably disposed in said polish container engaged by said closure means, and a tab forming a part of said polish applicator and removably positioned within said tab receiving recess in said side wall of said polish container in contact with and substantially sealing said polish container and said closure means and adapted for being interposed between said cover edge of said closure means and a finger tip during the separation of said closure means from said polish container.

2. A polish compact, comprising a polish container, an upstanding side wall forming a part of said polish container, a tab receiving recess extending axially of a portion of said polish container side wall, a polish container cover for closing said polish container, a depending cover side wall frictionally engaging said polish container side wall in substantially air sealing relation with a portion thereof, a polish applicator removably positioned within said polish container when en gaged by said cover, a compactible polish applicator tab removably disposed within and cornpactibly substantially completely filling said tab receiving recess in said polish container side wall and substantially completing said air sealing engagement between said cover and said polish container and said tab providing a finger grip portion disposed externally of said polish container closed by said cover and for use in removing said cover from said polish container.

A compact, comprising a container member having a bottom portion integral with an upstanding side wall terminating upwardly in a container mouth, an indented recess in said side wall and spaced from said bottom portion of said container member and continuing to said container mouth, closure means for removably closing said container member, polish applicator means disposed within said container member in anchoring relation thereagainst and compactible recess closure means inseparable with said polish applicator means and anchored inwardly of said closed container member by said polish applicator means and removably positioned in said side wall recess and contacting both said container member and said closure means in substantially air sealing relation therewith.

i. A compact, comprising a substantially cylindrical container member having a continuously that removably engages said container in closing relation therewith, polish applicator means removably positioned within said container member, and air sealing means forming an integral part of said polish applicator means and positioned within said recess and contacting both said container member and said cover member in substantially air and liquid sealing relation therewith.

5. In combination, a container member having a side Wall portion opening upwardly in a container mouth, an indented recess in said side wall portion and continuing to said container mouth, a closure member for releasably closing said container mouth, a compactible side wall recess closure means comprising a shoulder portion positioned inwardly of said container member and abutting against a portion thereof to anchor said side Wall recess closure means within said container and cover, a polish applicator pad removably disposed within said container member and continuously integral with said shoulder portion of said compactible recess closure member and said side wall recess closure means extending outwardly of said container member engaged by said closure member to provide means for removing said closure member from said container member whereby lifting force may be applied to said closure member at a peripheral portion that is substantially opposite a fulcrum contact portion between said container member and said closure member.
