7 Claims.
This invention relates to sliding doors for railway cars and concerns itself more particularly with such doors constructed to receive a wooden lining.
It is an object of this invention to provide a sliding car door having a wooden lining, the structure of the door being such that the lining may readily be removed from and applied to the door while the door is mounted upon the car.
A further object is to provide a sliding car door having a wooden lining, the door'being characterized by the fact that no increase in the number of fastening means utilized in the door is required for the securement of the lining and by the further fact that the fastening means are disposed in the same positions in the door as in the case of a door without a lining, so that additional holes in the door are avoided.
A further object is to provide a door having a wooden lining, the door being so constructed that means utilized to secure the lining is incorporated with the door in such manner as to reinforce the door.
Other objects of the invention will become clear as the description thereof proceeds.
In the drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a railway house car having applied thereto a door embodying the instant invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 33 of Figure l; and
Figure 4 is a horizontal section taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral i i) designates a railway house car which is provided with the customary door opening, defined along its vertical boundaries by means of front and rear door posts H and i2 and along its upper and lower boundaries by means of a side plate 53 and a floor I4. The opening thus defined is adapted to be controlled by means of a door It comprising a metallic panel It, which may be provided with a plurality of spaced horizontal corrugations ii and vertical corrugations l8 and IS with which the horizontal corrugations may merge. The front and rear vertical margins of the panel are reinforced by means of the vertical reinforcing members 20 and 2| while the upper horizontal margin of the panel is reinforced by means of the member 22.

ment upon the car it) upon a track 23 supported from a side sill 24 by means of a plurality of brackets 25. Antifrictional movement upon the track is provided for the door through the agency of hangers 26 and 27 carrying roller bearing roll- 5 ers 28 disposed in rolling engagement with the track 23. The hangers 26 and 21 are provided with upwardly extending flanges 29 which are disposed in overlapping engagement with a de pending flange 38 provided on the track 23 in 10 order to avoid disengagement of the lower portion of the door from the track. At its upper margin the door is maintained upon the car and guided in its movements upon the track by means of the interengagement between a depending l5 flange 3! provided on a retaining bar 32 secured to the depending leg 33 of the side plate 13 and the upwardly extending flange 34 provided on the horizontal reinforcing member 22. Clips 35 and 36, secured to the upper margin of the door, 00- 20 operate with the depending flange 3! of the retaining bar to prevent undue movement of the upper margin of the door toward the car.
An Opening and closing arrangement, indicated in its entirety by the reference numeral 31, 26 may be utilizedin conjunction with the door and a locking device, indicated as a whole by the numeral 38, may be utilized in order to fasten the door in its closed position.
The metallic door hereinabove described is de- 10 signed to receive a wooden lining and for this purpose applicants novel construction is utilized. There is, consequently, provided upon the front vertical margin of the door a member 39 preferably Z shaped in section which is secured upon 35 the inner face of the door by means of the same rivets utilized to fasten the vertical reinforcing member 25! to said door. As clearly illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings the member 20 is also preferably 2 shaped in section, one of the longitudinally extending flanges 40 thereof being adapted to cooperate with a channel shaped formation il provided on the front door post H in order to stop the closing movement of the door and to provide a weather protection therefor. Each of the members 20 and 39 are so disposed that their respective webs 42 and 43 extend inwardly and transversely of the door and, together with the disposition of the securing flanges of said members, constitute a reinforcing chan- B0 nel for the front margin of the door, whereby said front margin is materially strengthened to resist impact between the reinforcing member 20 and the door post H. I claim:
1. A railway car door comprising a sheet metal 15 v panel, a member secured to the front margin of forcement for said margin of the door, said I a t ter flange of said second mentioned member co operating with said panel to provide a pocket for receiving one margin of a wooden lining.
2. A railway car door comprising a sheet metal panel, a Z shaped member secured to the front 30 margin of said panel upon the outside thereof, .a second Z'shaped member secured to said margin upon the inside of said panel, the webs of 'said members extending inwardly and transversely of said panel whereby said membersconstitute a 35 channel shaped reinforcement for said m'argin of the door, one flange of said second Z-shaped member being disposed in parallel relationship to'saicl door and a wooden lining for said door, said 'latter'flange having overlapping relationship with saidlining.
3. In a railway house car having a door opening and a rear door post defining one boundary of said opening, a door slidably mounted upon said car for closing said opening, said door com 45 prising a metallic panel, a Wooden lining upon the inside of said panel, means secured upon the inside of said panel having overlapping engage ment with the upper, lower and front margin: of said lining, the rear margin of said lining ex- 50 tending beyond the proximate portion of said post and an angular reinforcing member having a flange securedto the rear vertical margin of said panel, the remainder of said reinforcing member lying rearwardly of a vertical plane in: 55 cluding the rear edge of said panel; 7 V

In a railway house car having a door open ing and a rear door post defining one boundary of said opening, a guard strip carried by said post, a door slidably mounted upon said car for 0 closing said opening, said door comprising a me- 7 tallic panel, a wooden lining upon the inside of said panel, means secured upon the inside of said panel having overlapping engagement with the upper, lower and front margins of said lining, the 5 7 rear margin of said lining extendingbeyond the guard strip, a reinforcing angle secured to the rear vertical margin of said door having a flange extending across the rear edge of said lining and a sealing strip disposed upon said lining and secured to said margin of the door for cooperation with said guard strip.
- 5; In a railway house car having'a door opening and a rear door post defining one boundary of said opening, a guard strip carried by said post, a door slidably mounted upon said car for closing said opening, said door comprising a metallic panel, a wooden lining upon the inside of said panel, means secured upon the inside of said panel having overlapping engagement with the upper, lower and front margins of said lining, the rear margin of said lining extending beyond the guard strip, a reinforcing angle secured to the rear vertical margin of said door having a flange extending across the rear edge of said lining and a sealing strip disposed upon said lining and secured to said margin of the door for cooperation with said guard strip, said reinforcing angle beng secured to the rear vertical margin of said door independently of said lining, the rear margin of said lining being notched to permit such securement, whereby said lining may be replaced while said door is mounted upon said car.
6. In a railway house car having a door opening, a guard strip secured to said car adjacent the rear vertical margin of said opening, a door slidably mounted upon said car for closing said opening, said door comprising a metallic panel, a wooden lining upon the inside of said panel,
means secured upon the inside of said panel having overlapping engagement with the upper, lower and front margins of said lining, the rear margin of said lining extending beyond the guard strip, and a sealing strip seated upon the inner face of said lining and means extending through said rear margin of said lining and said sealing strip for fastening the lining and sealing strip to said panel.
7. A sliding car door comprising a sheet metal panel, metallic members secured to the front and upper and lower margins of said panel upon the inside thereof, said members having webs extending at right angles to said panel whereby to dispose certain of the flanges provided on said members in spaced relationship to said panel, a wooden lining for said door, marginal portions of said lining being received between said flanges and said panel and a sealing strip seated upon the remaining margin of said lining and means for 20 securing said sealing strip, said remaining margin of said lining and said panel together.
