-Thisinvention relates to improvements in barbers? implements and pertains particularly to an improved' hair thinning device. The'.primary object of the present invention is torv provide an limproved hair thinning device by mea-ns of which the hair may be accurately and --safely thinned and without requiring the services of an expert in the work.
Another object of the invention is to provide vl a hair thinning device-having a comb combined therewith and operating on the principle oi a pair ofscissors. Still-another object of the invention is to -provide a'hair thinning device which is so designed that enly avery smallI portion o the hair taken up by the comb unit will be cut away.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration o f the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying v drawings-forming lpart of this specification, with 'the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings but may be changed or modified so long as such vchanges o r modifications v2'5 vmark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in .the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral I indicates the body of the device which is in the rforrn of Aan elongated flat shell which tapers off at one end to the ,point 2, while the other end is 'cut vsquare across and is open. Along one edge of the shell are formed `the Yspaced lparallel .teeth 3, and the edge wal-l of the shell between these teeth is cut away to form the crotches 4 which extend through the wall oi` the shell and to a depth below the same substantially equal 'to the thickness of the wall.
Secured in the open end of the shell I against 6 one side wall thereof is the shank portion 5 of a handle 8. This -shank has extending therethrough land through the opposite walls of the shell, lthe pivot screw 7 which has its head countersunk in one slide wall of the shell, as illustrated v10 in Figure l.
Disposed against the opposite side wall of lthe shell AI `.from the handle shank 5 Vis a disk -8 which is yattached to the shank 9 of a movable handle I0. This disk has the pivot screw'l exy1li tending centrally therethrough'and oscillates on this screw shank when the handle is moved -relative to the fixed handle 6. An ear II forms an ledge extension of the disk 8 `and is provided -wi-th a suitable aperture for the reception of a pivot '$0 pin I2.
VDisposed in the shell are two cutter blades, each lof which is indicated bythe numeral I3. 'Each of these blades has formed along one edge the series of teeth I4, one side of eachof whiicli'is 26 straight andextends perpendicularly to the blade, while the other side curves inwardly to join the inner end o f the straight side of the vnext adjacent tooth. As illustrated, the cutter `blades are disposed in side by side relation within the shell 1&0 so .that the curved edge of eachV tooth of one fblade is disposed beside Vthe straightl edge of a tooth Aof the other blade. Thus, when the blades are reciprocated so that they move in opposite directions in the shell, the lcurved edges of the u vteeth of one blade will move toward and away from Ithe-cu-rvl-:d edges of the other blade. As i1- lustrated, the yheight of the blades I3 is equalto the interior width of the shell s o that the teeth of the blades will move across the notches formed 40 beneath the inner surface of the edge wall through which they are cut. y
Each of the -blades I3 has a slot I5 cut obliquely therein in the end nearest the ear -II andthe oblique -s-lot of one blade is disposed toextend 45 across the oblique slot of the -other bladeand the pin I2 which is carried `vby Ythe ear H is arranged Lto slide vin these slots. Each of the blades I3 has an aperture I6 formed adjacent its transverse center and disposed between each blade i3 and the adjacent side wall of the shell I is a bowed hat spring I1 which has an outstruck portion or button I8 which positions in the adjacent aperture I6, the ends of the flat bowed spring slidably pressing against the adjacent wall oi the shell.
In Figures to 8 inclusive is shown another iorm of the present invention. In this form, the body portion, which is indicated generally by the numeral i6, is of the saine configuration as the body I, being relatively broad, fiat and hollow, except that at the open end, a cuil-like extension 26, is formed. This body I9, which constitutes a shell housing for th-e cutters, is divided on a plane passing between its broad side faces to form the 'two halves 2i and 22. The teeth 23 are formed integral with one half only of the shell, as illustrated in Figure 7. However, the vcrotches 24 between and at the bases oi' the teeth extendbelow the top edge of the adjacent shell yhalf 22, andthe top edge oi this other half also is provided with crotches, as indicated at 25, to match those in the portion 2 I.
`Disposed within the body are the two cutter bars 26 andv 21. These bars are of the same construction as the bars I3 insofar as the formation ofthe teeth 28 is concerned. However, the bar 26 is xed against movement, having apertures for the reception of the fixed interiorly threaded hollow. studs 39 which, as shown in Figure 7, are

The cutter bar 21 has the pair of short longitudinally extending slots 3IA therein, through which the studs 29 pass, and this cutter bar is slidable on the studs relative to the bar `,26. yThe cutter bar 21 extends at its rear end bey'ond the' rear end or" the xed bar 26 and this extended end is provided with the oblique slot 32 for the purpose about to be described.

The handles' 35 and 36 are provided with the usual iinger openings like those shown in Figure l, and
the handle 36 has an enlarged inner end 31 through which the bushing 34 passes, the handle 35 being provided with a similar enlarge- ,ment and with the forwardly extending finger 38, which carries a pin 39 which is slidably engaged in the slot 32 of the movable blade. The
enlarged portion 31 of the handle 36 is formed to provide a knuckle il!) which bears against the adjacent end of the movable blade while the iinger 38 of the other handle passes forwardly along the side of the same toward the end of the xed blade.
From the foregoing, it will be readily apparent ,that in the operation of the cutter as illustrated in FiguresY v1 to 4,7inclusive, the two blades are moved alternately back and forth in the shell. whereas in the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 5 to 8 inclusive, the moving together and apart of the handles 35 and 36 aiects only the blade 21. The closing or moving together of the handles causes the knuckle 40 to bear against the end of the blade 21 and the pin 39 to ride upwardly in the rearwardly inclined slot 32, thus forming two points of pressure or Iulcrums for forcing the blade forwardly. Upon the separation of the handles, the pin 29 oper- -ates alone to retract the movable blade.
In order to make easier the operation of the device as illustrated in Figure 6, the forward end of the housing or shell I9 encloses a spring element 4I which, as illustrated, bears at one end against the adjacent end of the shftable blade 21 and normally tends to urge the blade in the direction of the handles.v
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that Vwhen a quantity of hair is picked up by the comb teeth and the oscillatable handles are operated, the blades will be moved one relative to the other in the shell and only those few hairs which are disposed in the crotches between the comb teeth will be cut oil. 0f course, this operation can be made continuous or intermittent, as desired.
What is claimed iszl. A hair thinning device, comprising an elongated ilat blade-like body having a plurality of crotches formed across one edge, said body being hollow and saidcrotches extending through the wall to the interior of the body, a blade disposed within the body and having a plurality of teeth along the edge adjacent the crotches, said blade being longitudinally shiftable in the body to move the teeth transversely of the crotches, rigid teeth projecting from the body from the areas thereof ing a plurality of notches cut transversely of ne edge and extending through the wall to the interior of the body, a pair of flat blades disposed in side by side relation within the body, a plurality of teeth formed along the edge of each blade which is adjacent the crotches, the blades being relatively movable longitudinally of the body to bring the teeth of one into cutting relation with the teeth of the other at the central parts of the crotches, and means carried by the hollow body at the other end and connected with the blades for causing relative reciprocatory movement of the blades. A hair thinning device, comprising an elongated flat hollow body which is closed at one end and open at the other end, a plurality of teeth extending in spaced parallel relation from one edge of the body and having crotches therebetween which extend through the wall of the body to the interior, a pair of flat blades disposed in side by side relation within the body, a plurality of teeth formed along that edge of each blade which is adjacent said crotches, a handle fixed at the open end of the hollow body, a second handle pivotally attached to and extending into the open end of the hollow body, means operatively coupling said second handle with the blades to effect relative reciprocation thereof, and resilient elements disposed between the blades and the adjacent sides of the enclosing body for maintaining the blades in contacting relation.

A hair thinning device, comprising an elongated iiat hollow body which is closed at one end and open at the other end, a plurality of teeth extending in spaced parallel relation from one edge of the body and having crotches therebetween which extend through the wall of the body to the interior, a pair of hat blades disposed in side by side relation within the body, a plurality of teeth formed along that edge of each blade which is adjacent said crotches, a handle iixed at the open end of the hollow body, a second handle pivotally attached to and extending into the open end of the hollow body, each of said blades having an oblique slot therein at the end adjacent the pivoted portion of the second handle, said slots being arranged in crossed rela'- tion, and a carried by the pivoted end of the second handle and engaging in said slots whereby to eliect the relative reciprocatory movement of the blades upon its movement transversely of the body by the actuation of the second handle.

In a hair thinning device, a comb-like body having a hollow back portion and teeth formed along and projecting laterally from one side edge thereoi, a pair of toothed cutting elements dispsed in the hollow body, said body having crotches extending through the wall thereof between and at the bases of the teeth, the teeth of said cutting element extending above the narrowest portions of said crotches, and means for effecting the movement of a cutting element relative to the other for severing hair disposed in said crotches.
A hair thinning device, comprising an elongated nat hollow shell divided on planes paralleling the flat sides thereof to form two sections, teeth formed integrally with one section along an edge and projecting laterally thereof, a cutter blade fixed within the shell and having teeth directed toward said rst teeth, said shell having crotches cut therein between the first teeth and inwardly beyond the ends of said cutter blade teeth, a second cutter blade having, teeth disposed adjacent the first cutter blade teeth, said second cutter blade being longitudinally shiftable, a handle comprising two arms one having an end disposed in one end of the shell and pivotally joined thereto, a finger extending inwardly from the pivoted one of said cutter arms, and a pin carried by said linger and extending laterally into a slot formed in and obliquely of the movable cutter.

A hair thinning device, comprising an elongated flat hollow shell divided on planes paralleling the fiat sides thereof to form two sections, teeth formed integrally with one section along an edge and projecting laterally thereof, a cutter blade fixed within the shell and having teeth directed toward said rst teeth, said shell having crotches cut therein between the rst teeth and inwardly beyond the ends of said cutter blade teeth, a second cutter blade having teeth disposed adjacent the first cutter blade teeth, said second cutter blade being longitudinally shiftable, a handle comprising two arms each having an end disposed in one end of the shell and pivotally joined thereto, a finger forming an extension of one of the arms within the shell and disposed at one side of the movable cutter, said movable cutter having a slot cut obliquely therethrough, a pin carried by said finger and slidably engaging in said slot, and a knuckle formed at the inner end of the other arm and slidably engaging against the end of the movable cutter.

An implement of the character described, comprising a comb-like body having teeth and a back, the back of said body being hollow and the spaces between the teeth being extended into the interior of the back, a pair of movable blades in side by side relation in said back, teeth carried by the blades disposed to move across the extended portions of said spaces, and means for relatively reciprocating the blades to effect the cutting by the teeth of hair lying in said spaces.

An implement of the character described, comprising a comb-like body having teeth and a back, the back of said body being hollow and the spaces between the teeth being extended into the interior of the back, a pair of movable blades in side by side relation in said back, teeth carried by the blades disposed to move across the extended portions of said spaces, means for relatively reciprocating the blades to effect the cutting by the teeth of hair lying in said spaces, and resilient means constantly maintaining the blades with the teeth thereof in close operative relation.
12. An implement of the character described, comprising a comb-like body having teeth and a back, the back of said body being hollow and the spaces between the teeth being extended into the interior of the back, a pair of movable blades in side by side relation in said back, teeth carried by the blades disposed to move across the extended portions of said spaces, a pair of scissorslike handles attached to and extending from one end of said body, one of the handles being pivotally mounted, and means operated by the pivotally mounted handle for effecting relative movement between the blades.
