Abstract
An aerial power generation system includes wind driven elements that are in the form of rectangular sails. The sails are configured and shaped to provide maximum force from both lift and drag during the downwind phase of operation and minimum force during the upwind phase. Guide lines, support elements such as kites or blimps, and/or radio controlled airfoils add stability to the system and provide better control over angular orientation and direction of motion. Power transfer is through one or more cables connected from the wind driven elements to various electromechanical devices on the ground. Another embodiment of the aerial power generation system includes a revolving apparatus and two or more wind powered driven elements connected by tow lines to the revolving apparatus.
Description
- The present invention relates to power generation and more particularly to systems that convert wind energy acting on aerial wind driven elements to rotary or electrical power.
- As fossil fuels become depleted and more expensive, the need for cost competitive methods and apparatus for harnessing renewable energy sources increases. The wind was long used for powering sailing ships and windmills, but the advent of steam engines or turbines, internal combustion engines, and gas turbines provided cheaper, more convenient energy sources. Less expensive and more efficient apparatus and methods for utilizing wind power would now be beneficial.
- Windmills (or wind turbines) are currently being used to generate electricity and to drive pumps, however the cost to generate electricity with a windmill is still more expensive than the cost of electricity generated from fossil fuels. Windmills have a high capital cost relative to power generated. Wind speed, in general, is higher and more consistent with increasing altitude. There is potential to generate significant power with airborne or aerial apparatus at altitudes above the heights reasonably reachable by ground based windmills.
- The challenge with wind power generation is to convert the linear power of the wind to rotary motion to drive an electrical generator or a pump. One known approach to aerial wind power generation is a tethered, aerial windmill. Such aerial windmills can be supported by lighter than air aircraft, such as a blimp, or by lift from airfoil wing structures. These aerial windmills are relatively heavy and require long, heavy electrical cables to transmit the generated power to ground level.
- A second known approach to aerial wind power generation is a wind powered element, such as a kite, blimp or airfoil, that is connected to a tow line. The tow line wraps around a reel on the shaft of a ground level power generation device. As the wind powered element is pulled by the wind, the distance from the wind powered element to the shaft increases and the tow line rotates the reel and shaft to generate power. The angle of attack or the shape of the wind powered element is changeable so that the wind powered element can be reeled back towards the ground level power generation device with little power use.
- A third known approach to aerial wind power generation is an endless chain of spaced kites linked to the shaft of a ground level power generation device. The kites follow an ascending path and a descending path. The kites are adjustable to provide higher lift while on the ascending path.
- An aerial power generation system includes a guide line that extends skywards at a selected angle. The guide line is connected at the upper end to a support body. A wind powered driven element is slidably mounted on the guide line. The driven element is connected by a tow line to a reel on a shaft of a means for generating power. Means are provided for changing the driven element from high force configurations to low force configurations. Another aerial power generation system includes a plurality of wind powered driven elements connected by tow lines to spaced attachment points on a revolving apparatus that drives a means for generating power. A means for changing the driven elements between high force configurations and low force configurations changes each driven element to high force configurations when the respective attachment point is moving downwind and to low force configurations when the respective attachment point is moving upwind to cause rotation of the revolving apparatus.

FIG. 1 , an aerial windpower generation system 11 embodying features of the present invention includes afirst guide line 14, afirst support body 15, a drivenelement 16, afirst tow line 17, asecond tow line 18 and a means for generatingpower 19. Thefirst guide line 14 has afirst end 21 that is tethered at the ground or to a structure, and thefirst guide line 14 extends skywardly at a selected elevation angle to a spacedsecond end 22 that is attached to thefirst support body 15. Thefirst support body 15 is an aircraft that is lifted by the wind, such as a kite as shown, or a lighter than air aircraft, such as a blimp or a balloon. Preferably the lift of thefirst support body 15 can be varied to maintain the elevation angle of thefirst guide line 14. - The driven
element 16 is slidably attached or mounted on thefirst guide line 14. The drivenelement 16 is a kite, sail, airfoil or other element that generates both drag and lift from the wind. The first andsecond tow lines element 16. Thefirst tow line 17, and generally thesecond tow line 18, connect to the means for generatingpower 19 to rotate the means for generatingpower 19 to generate power. The means for generatingpower 19 is generally positioned near thefirst end 21 of thefirst guide line 14, and can be an electrical generator, a rotary pump, a compressor or other rotary power generation equipment. -
FIGS. 2, 3 and 4 show a drivenelement 16 including anupper spar 25, a spaced, substantially parallellower spar 26, and a generally rectangular, flexiblefabric sail portion 27 extending between the upper andlower spars sail portion 27 includes a plurality of spaced longitudinal spars orbattens 28 transverse to the upper andlower spars battens 28 are shaped to curve thesail portion 27 into an airfoil shape with greater curvature near theupper spar 25 than near thelower spar 26 to provide increased lift force when needed. The battens can be shaped to provide such curvature by tapering theupper ends 31 relative to thelower ends 32 to make theupper ends 31 more flexible, as in some sailboat or iceboat sails. Anairfoil 29 is attached to each end of thelower spar 26 and projects laterally therefrom to further control the shape of the drivenelement 16. The rotation angle of the airfoils about a horizontal axis can be remotely controlled. The pair ofairfoils 29 could also be used along the bottom edge of the sail and would thus be similar to conventional aircraft ailerons. - A
pulley block 34 having threepulleys 35 in a triangular arrangement is slidably mounted onto thefirst guide line 14, with twopulleys 35 above and onepulley 35 below thefirst guide line 14. A plurality ofsupport lines 37 attach to thepulley block 34, and diverge outwardly and downwardly therefrom to attach in a spaced arrangement along theupper spar 25 of the drivenelement 16. Thefirst tow line 17 attaches to theupper spar 25 and thesecond tow line 18 attaches to thelower spar 26. - Although a single driven
element 16 is shown, a train or string of drivenelements 16 can be used. -
FIG. 3 shows the drivenelement 16 in a high force configuration. The wind acting on the drivenelement 16 is represented by anapparent wind vector 41. Theapparent wind vector 41 is equal to thetrue wind vector 42 minus the drivenelement velocity vector 43. The first andsecond tow lines sail portion 27 into an airfoil shape and to position thesail portion 27 such that the leadingedge 39 of thesail portion 27 points into theapparent wind vector 41.FIG. 4 shows the drivenelement 16 in a low force configuration. Thesecond tow line 18 is lengthened relative to thefirst tow line 17, allowing thesail portion 27 to flatten and point into theapparent wind vector 41. Thesecond tow line 18 acts as a control line. - In
FIG. 1 thesecond tow line 18 extends to the means for generatingpower 19, and in combination with the means for generatingpower 19 forms a means for changing 45 the drivenelement 16 between high force and low force configurations.FIG. 5 shows an alternative means for changing 45 the drivenelement 16 between high force and low force configurations, with thesecond tow line 18 extending from thelower spar 26 of the drivenelement 16 to aremote control winch 47 that is mounted on thefirst tow line 17 and spaced from theupper spar 25 of the drivenelement 16. Thewinch 47 can include, by way of example and not as a limitation, a wind or solar powered electrical generator, batteries and a communications device for remote control. Thewinch 47 lengthens and shortens thesecond tow line 18. Thewinch 47 can be used in applications where the weight of thewinch 47 is less than the weight of asecond tow line 18 extending from the drivenelement 16 to the means for generatingpower 19. - Referring to
FIGS. 6 and 7 , the means for generatingpower 19 includes an electrical motor/generator 50 with ashaft 51 extending from one end, and spaced first andsecond reels power 19 is mounted arotating platform 55 that rotates about apivot 56 to maintain the orientation of thepower generation system 11 relative to the direction of the wind. The motor/generator 50 is rigidly mounted on theplatform 55 with theshaft 51 being supported by spacedsupport bearings 58 that are also mounted on theplatform 55. Threesupport bearings 58 are shown with one support bearing 58 on the outer sides of each of the positioned first andsecond reels second reels - The
first tow line 17 wraps around thefirst reel 52 and thesecond tow line 18 wraps around thesecond reel 53. Thefirst reel 52 is rigidly attached to theshaft 51 and thesecond reel 53 is rotably mounted on theshaft 51. Thesecond reel 53 has cylindrical drum 60 mounted on theshaft 51 by bearings, and spaced first andsecond flanges toothed gear 64 is rigidly attached to theshaft 51 and spaced from thesecond flange 62. Twocontrol motors 66 are mounted on the outside of thesecond flange 62 on opposite sides of theshaft 51. Aworm gear 67 is connected to and driven by eachcontrol motor 66, with the worm gears 67 being parallel and meshing to opposite sides of thetoothed gear 64. Two motors are used to provide good mass balance of the reel assembly and thus allow for higher rotation rates.Slipring assemblies 69 on the end ofshaft 51 opposite the motor/generator 50 and inside the drum 60 provide power to thecontrol motors 66. Driving thecontrol motors 66 rotates thesecond reel 53 relative to thefirst reel 52, lengthening or shortening thesecond tow line 18 relative to thefirst tow line 17, thereby providing a means for changing 45 the drivenelement 16 between high force and low force configurations. Therefore, thesecond reel 53,toothed gear 64, worm gears 67 andcontrol motors 66 form a means for shortening and lengthening thesecond tow line 18 relative to thefirst tow line 17. Alternatively, the means for generatingpower 19 could include two independent, vertically stacked motor/generators to provide a means for changing 45 the drivenelement 16 between high force and low force configurations. - The
first guide line 14 provides stability to the drivenelement 16, allowing the use of drivenelements 16 with higher power and less stability than the drivenelements 16 that could be used without thefirst guide line 14. Thefirst guide line 14 also guides the drivenelement 16 along a path having a selected elevation angle, so that the power of the drivenelement 16 can be further optimized. -
FIG. 8 shows an aerial windpower generation system 11 embodying features of the present invention including afirst guide line 14, asecond guide line 71, afirst support body 15, asecond support body 72, a drivenelement 16, afirst tow line 17, asecond tow line 18 and a means for generatingpower 19. Thefirst guide line 14 has afirst end 21 that is tethered at the ground or to a structure, and thefirst guide line 14 extends skywardly at a selected elevation angle to a spacedsecond end 22 that is attached to the first support body15. Thesecond guide line 71 has afirst end 74 that is tethered at the ground or to a structure, and thesecond guide line 71 extends skywardly, spaced from and generally parallel to thefirst guide line 14, at a selected elevation angle to a spacedsecond end 75 that is attached to thesecond support body 72. The first andsecond support bodies second support bodies second guide lines - Referring to
FIG. 9 , thefirst support body 15 includes akite 77 and abridle 78. Thekite 77 is generally a modified sled kite and has a substantiallyrectangular framework 80 with atop spar 81, a spacedbottom spar 82, and two spaced, parallel side spars 83 that extend from thetop spar 81 to thebottom spar 82. Asail portion 84 covers theframework 80 and has equaltriangular wings 85 extending laterally beyond the side spars 83. Theoutward corners 86 of thewings 85 are located significantly nearer to thetop spar 81 than to thebottom spar 82. A pair of spaced,triangular holes 87 are located in thesail portion 84 near thebottom spar 82 to add stability to thekite 77. - A
winch 88 is mounted in each lower corner of theframework 80.Wires 91 extend from eachwinch 88 to acontrol module 90, suspending thecontrol module 90 below the bottom 82, intermediate thewinches 88, and connecting thecontrol module 90 to the twowinches 88. The suspendedcontrol module 90 acts as tail for thekite 77, increasing the stability of thekite 77. Thecontrol module 90 can include, by way of example, and not as a limitation, a two way radio link to the ground, a rechargeable battery, a wind or solar battery charging device, measurement devices and aircraft warning lighting. The measurement devices can include wind speed, light, altitude, GPS, three dimensional acceleration, temperature, humidity, and orientation sensing and measurement. - The
bridle 78 includes two eachupper bridle lines 93,lower bridle lines 94 and common bridle lines 95. One end of eachupper bridle line 93 connects to anoutward corner 86 of awing 85 of thesail portion 84. One end of eachlower bridle line 94 connects to awinch 88. The other ends of the upper andlower bridle lines kite 77 connect together and to one end of acommon bridle line 95. The other ends of thecommon bridle lines 95 connect together and to thesecond end 22 of thefirst guide line 14. Thelower bridle lines 94 in combination with thewinches 88 can vary the angle of attack of thekite 77 relative to the wind, thereby forming a means for varying lift 96 (or drag) of thekite 77. Differential control of the lower bridle line lengths will allow for azimuth angle control with respect to the wind direction. Although asingle kite 77 is shown, a train ofkites 77 can be used to form the first orsecond support body -
FIG. 10 shows thekite 77 with a modifiedbridle 97 for providing support to both the first andsecond guide lines upper bridle line 93 connects to anoutward corner 86 of awing 85 of thesail portion 84. One end of eachlower bridle line 94 connects to an end of thebottom spar 82 of theframework 80 of thekite 77. Atube 98, sized to extend between the first andsecond guide lines control module 90 incorporated into the middle and thewinches 88 incorporated into opposite ends. The other ends of theupper bridle lines 93 connect to opposite ends of thetube 98. The other ends of each of thelower bridle lines 94 connects to awinch 88. Thesecond end 22 of thefirst guide line 14 connects to one end of thetube 98 and thesecond end 75 of thesecond guide line 71 connects to the opposite end of thetube 98. Thewinches 88 shorten or lengthen thelower bridle lines 94 to vary the angle of attack of thekite 77 relative to the wind. - As shown in
FIG. 11 , thefirst support body 15 can be ablimp 99 with atransverse support bar 100. Thesecond end 22 of thefirst guide line 14 connects to one end of thesupport bar 100 and thesecond end 75 of thesecond guide line 71 connects to the opposite end of thesupport bar 100. The use of theblimp 99 eliminates the need to bring the aerial portions of thepower generation system 11 to the ground during low wind conditions and may allow for larger scale systems with higher power generation. -
FIG. 12 shows the drivenelement 16 withpulleys 35 at opposite ends of theupper spar 25 to slidably mount the drivenelement 16 on the spaced first andsecond guide lines bridle lines 101 attach at one end in a spaced arrangement to theupper spar 25 and converge to attach to thefirst tow line 17. A plurality ofbridle lines 101 attach at one end in a spaced arrangement to thelower spar 26 and converge to attach to thesecond tow line 18. The first andsecond tow lines element 16 and may attach to additional drivenelements 16 that are above and downwind from the shown drivenelement 16. - Referring to
FIG. 13 , an aerial windpower generation system 103 embodying features of the present invention includes a plurality of aerial wind powered drivenelements 104, atow line 105 for each of the drivenelements 104, a means for changing 106 each of the drivenelements 104 individually between high force and low force configurations, a revolvingapparatus 107, and a means for generatingpower 108. The revolvingapparatus 107 has acenter 110 and, for each drivenelement 104, a towline attachment point 111. The revolvingapparatus 107 is represented bycircle 112 and the tow line attachment points 111 are evenly spaced around the periphery of the revolvingapparatus 107. One end of eachtow line 105 connects to a drivenelement 104 and the other end of eachtow line 105 connects to a towline attachment point 111. The means for generatingpower 108 is linked to and driven by the revolvingapparatus 107. The means for generatingpower 108 can be directly connected or can be linked by gears, belts, driveshafts or other means, and might be located near thecenter 110 and driven by a rotating shaft below the revolvingapparatus 107. -
FIGS. 14 and 15 show a revolvingapparatus 107 with fourcross bars 113 projecting horizontally from thecenter 110, and spaced ninety degrees from each other. At the end of eachcross bar 113, opposite thecenter 110, anupright member 114 projects upwardly and transversely. An upperrotating collar 115 rotates around the upper end of eachupright member 114 and a lowerrotating collar 116 rotates around the lower end of eachupright member 114. The upperrotating collar 115 provides the towline attachment point 111. The lowerrotating collar 116 provides a controlline attachment point 118 for one end of acontrol line 119. The opposite end of thecontrol line 119 connects to the drivenelement 104. - As shown in
FIG. 16 , a drivenelement 104 includes anupper spar 133, alower spar 134 spaced from theupper spar 133, and arectangular sail portion 135 extending between the upper andlower spars upper bridle lines 136 connect in a spaced arrangement to theupper spar 133 and converge to connect to thetow line 105. A plurality oflower bridle lines 137 connect in a spaced arrangement to thelower spar 134 and converge to connect to thecontrol line 119. Threesled kites 138 are connected to the drivenelement 104 bysupport lines 139, to increase stability and support, with akite 138 connecting to each end of theupper spar 133 and onekite 138 connecting to the middle of thelower spar 134. The angle of attack of the drivenelement 104 relative to the wind changes as thetow line 105 andcontrol line 119 are pulled in or let out relative to each other, changing the driven element between high force and low force configurations. A similar change in the angle of attack of thekites 138, as described above, might also be used in synchronization with the changes in the driven element. - Referring to
FIG. 14 , when across bar 113 is moving directly downwind, therespective upright member 114 projects downwind. At this position the end of thecross bar 113 has the longest distance, relative to other points of rotation of the revolvingapparatus 107, to the attachment of thetow line 105 to the upper bridle lines 136. The lengths of thetow line 105 andcontrol line 119 are tailored so that the drivenelement 104 is in the highest force configuration when the end of thecross bar 113 is moving directly down wind. Thecross bar 113 moving directly upwind has the shortest distance, relative to other points of rotation of the revolvingapparatus 107, from the end of thecross bar 113 to the attachment of thetow line 105 to theupper bridle lines 136 and this is the position of the lowest force configuration. Theupright member 114 andcontrol line 119 provide the means for changing 106. The drivenelements 104 are pulled downwind by the wind in high force configurations and upwind by the revolvingapparatus 107 in low force configurations, causing the revolvingapparatus 107 to revolve and to drive the means for generatingpower 108. - The means for changing 106 can be a remote control system as described above or other mechanical means for lengthening and shortening the
tow line 105 andcontrol line 119 relative to each other. The means for generatingpower 108 can be an electrical generator, a liquid pump, a compressor or other power transfer device. Thepower generation system 103 can be scaled from smaller to larger sizes. For smaller sizes of thepower generation system 103, the cross bars 113 of the revolvingapparatus 107 can be self supporting. Larger versions of thepower generation system 103 could have the revolvingapparatus 107 as large as a revolving agricultural irrigation system. The cross bars 113 of a large revolvingapparatus 107 can be supported by wheels 124 and linked bycables 125. The wheels 124 can carry and drive agenerator 126. -
FIG. 17 shows an aerial windpower generation system 103 with another revolvingapparatus 128 having an endless,closed track 129 with a plurality of spaced, linkedcars 130 on the track. Thetrack 129 can be a railroad type track and thecars 130 can be similar to railroad cars. Thetrack 129 does not have to have a circular shape and can be shaped to optimize power generation. Generally, the means for generatingpower 108 is carried on thecars 130 and connected towheels 131 to generate power. Thetow line 105 attaches forwardly on thecar 130 and thecontrol line 119 attaches rearwardly on thecar 130, to change the driven element between high force and low force configurations as thecars 130 travel around the track. The aerial windpower generation system 103 could alternatively have a revolving apparatus with a plurality of towers with bullwheels similar to ski chairlifts and aerial trams. A cable could pass around the bullwheels in a generally circular path withtow lines 105 andcontrol lines 119 attaching to the cable. -
FIG. 18 shows an aerial windpower generation system 103 with another revolvingapparatus 141 having acenter 142 with a pair of cross bars 143 projecting horizontally in opposite directions from thecenter 142. A towline attachment point 144 is provided at the end of eachcross bar 143, opposite thecenter 142. Atow line 105 connects a drivenelement 145 to each towline attachment point 144. Referring toFIG. 19 , the drivenelement 145 shown is a modified sled kite and has a substantiallyrectangular framework 147 with atop spar 148, a spacedbottom spar 149, and two spaced, parallel side spars 150 that extend from thetop spar 148 to thebottom spar 149. Asail portion 151 covers theframework 147 and has equaltriangular wings 152 extending laterally beyond the side spars 150. Theoutward corners 153 of thewings 152 are located significantly nearer to thetop spar 148 than to thebottom spar 149. - A
bridle 155 for the drivenelement 145 includes twoupper bridle lines 156 and two lower bridle lines 157. Theupper bridle lines 156 connect at one end tocorners 153, and thelower bridle lines 157 connect at one end to opposite ends of thebottom spar 149. A generallyspherical control module 158 incorporates fourwinches 159 with the opposite ends of the upper andlower bridle lines separate winch 159. Thecontrol module 158 connects to the upper end of atow line 105. Thecontrol module 158 is remotely controlled and can change the length of each of the upper andlower bridle lines control module 158 and the upper andlower bridle lines element 145 between high force and low force configurations, and a means for varying 160 the azimuth angle of the drivenelement 145. - Referring again to
FIG. 18 , the direction of the wind is shown bywind vector 162. By varying the azimuth angle of the drivenelements 145, the drivenelements 145 can fly at an angle relative to thewind vector 162. The azimuth angle of the drivenelements 145 is selected through the rotation of the revolvingapparatus 141 so that the drivenelements 145, through thetow lines 105, each generate torque on the cross bars 143 over an arc of more than 180 degrees of the rotation of the revolvingapparatus 141. By generating torque for more the 180 degrees, the drivenelements 145 generate more power than would be generated without a means for varying 160 the azimuth angle of the drivenelement 145. - Although the present invention has been described with a certain degree of particularity, it is understood that the present disclosure has been made by way of example and that changes in details of structure may be made without departing from the spirit thereof.
Claims (29)
1. An aerial power generation system for generation of power from the wind, comprising:
a first guide line extending skywardly at a selected elevation angle from a first end to a spaced second end,
a first support body attached to said second end of said first guide line for supporting said first guide line,
a wind powered driven element slidably mounted on said first guide line,
a first tow line connected to said driven element, and
means, connected to said first tow line opposite said driven element and driven by said first tow line, for generating power,
whereby the wind pushes said driven element away from said means for generating, said driven element slides along said first guide line and pulls said first tow line, and said first tow line drives said means for generating power.
2. The system as set forth in claim 1 including:
means for changing said driven element between high force and low force configurations,
whereby said means for changing moves said driven element to a said high force configuration to generate power, and said means for changing moves said driven element to a said low force configuration for pulling said driven element towards said means for generating power.
3. The system as set forth in claim 2:
including a second tow line connected to said driven element, and
wherein said means for changing shortens and lengthens said second tow line relative to said first tow line to move said driven element between high force and low force configurations.
4. The system as set forth in claim 3 wherein said second tow line connects to said means for generating power opposite said driven element,
whereby said second tow line, with said first tow line, drives said means for generating power.
5. The system as set forth in claim 2 wherein said driven element has an angle of attack relative to the wind, and said means for changing changes said angle of attack to move said driven element between high force and low force configurations.
6. The system as set forth in claim 2 wherein said driven element has variable shape and said means for changing changes said shape to move said driven element between high force and low force configurations.
7. The system as set forth in claim 2 wherein said driven element has an angle of attack relative to the wind and a variable shape, and said means for changing changes at least one of said angle of attack and said shape to move said driven element between high force and low force configurations.
8. The system as set forth in claim 1 wherein driven element includes an upper spar, a lower spar spaced from said upper spar, a sail portion extending between said upper and lower spars and a pulley connected to said upper spar for slidably mounting said driven element on said first guide line.
9. The system as set forth in claim 8:
wherein said first tow line attaches to said pulley, and
including:
a second tow line attached to said lower spar and to said means for generating power opposite said driven element, and
means for shortening and lengthening said second tow line relative to said first tow line,
whereby shortening and lengthening said second tow line relative to said first tow line changes at least one of the shape and the angle relative to the wind of said driven element to change said driven element between high force and low force configurations.
10. The system as set forth in claim 8 wherein said driven element includes spaced first and second airfoils attached to said lower spar.
11. The system as set forth in claim 1;
wherein said support body has lift, and
including means for varying said lift of said first support body whereby said support body maintains said selected elevation angle.
12. The system as set forth in claim 11 wherein said support body includes a kite and a bridle, said bridle having a plurality of bridle lines extending from said kite to first guide line and said means for varying lift includes means for varying the length of at least one of said bridle lines to vary the angle of said kite relative to the wind.
13. The system as set forth in claim 12 wherein said means for varying the length includes a remote control winch connected to at least one of said bridle lines between said first guide line and said kite.
14. The system as set forth in claim 11 wherein said first support body includes a lighter than air aircraft containing a lighter than air gas.
15. The system as set forth in claim 1 including a second guide line extending skywardly, spaced from and parallel to said first guide line, at said selected elevation angle from a first end to a spaced second end, said driven element being slidably mounted on said second guide line.
16. The system as set forth in claim 15 wherein said second end of said second guide line is attached to said first support body in a spaced relationship to said second end of said first guide line.
17. The system as set forth in claim 15 including a second support body spaced from said first support body, with the said second end of said second guide line being attached to said second support body.
18. The system as set forth in claim 1 wherein said means for generating power is an electrical generator having a shaft with a reel that is rotated by said first tow line.
19. The system as set forth in claim 1 wherein said means for generating power is a rotary fluid pump with a shaft that is rotated by said first tow line.
20. An aerial power generation system for generation of power from the wind, comprising:
a guide line extending skywardly at a selected elevation angle from a first end to a spaced second end,
a kite,
a bridle having a plurality of bridle lines extending from said kite to said guide lines
a remote control winch connected between a said bridle line and said guide line for varying the length of said bridle line to vary the angle of said kite relative to the wind,
a wind powered driven element having an upper spar, a spaced lower spar, a sail portion extending between said upper and lower spars and a pulley connected to said upper spar that slidably mounts said driven element on said guide line,
a first tow line connected to said upper spar,
a second tow line connected to said lower spar,
means for shortening and lengthening said second tow line relative to said first tow line, and
an electrical generator with a shaft and a reel on said shaft that is are rotated by said first tow line,
whereby the wind pushes said driven element away from said generator, said driven element slides along said first guide line and pulls said first tow line, and said first tow line rotates said reel and said shaft to generate power, and
whereby when said means for shortening and lengthening changes said driven element to a low force configuration, said driven element can be pulled towards said generator with low power.
21. An aerial power generation system for generation of power from the wind, comprising:
a plurality of aerial wind powered driven elements,
a tow line for each said driven element, each said tow line having an upper end attached to a said driven element and a spaced lower end,
means for changing each said driven element individually between high force and low force configurations,
revolving apparatus with a center and having a tow line attachment point for each said driven element, said lower end of each said tow line being attached to a separate tow line attachment point, said tow line attachment points being linked together, spaced from said center and spaced from each other, and
means, linked to said revolving apparatus and driven thereby, for generating power,
whereby said means for changing changes each said driven element to high force configurations when the respective said tow line attachment point is moving downwind and changes each said driven element to low force configurations when the respective said tow line attachment point is moving upwind, so that downwind moving said tow line attachment points pull upwind moving said tow line attachment points, causing said revolving apparatus to revolve and thereby driving said means for generating power.
22. The system as set forth in claim 21 wherein said means for changing includes a control line for each said driven element, each said control line having an upper end attached to a said driven element and a spaced lower end.
23. The system as set forth in claim 22 wherein said means for changing includes a remote control winch for each said driven element, each said winch connecting to the respective said tow line and to said lower end of the respective said control line.
24. The system as set forth in claim 22 wherein said revolving apparatus includes a control line attachment point for each said driven element, each said control line attachment point being spaced at a selected distance and angle from the respective said tow line attachment point, each said control line attachment point connecting to said lower end of the respective said control line.
25. The system as set forth in claim 21 wherein said revolving apparatus includes a plurality of cross bars with a said cross bar for each said driven element, said cross bars extending radially from said center and each having the respective said tow line attachment point opposite said center.
26. The system as set forth in claim 25 wherein:
said revolving apparatus includes a plurality of wheels attached to and supporting said cross bars, said wheels being spaced from said center, and
said means for generating power includes a plurality of electrical generators, said generators being carried by, linked to and driven by said wheels.
27. The system as set forth in claim 21 wherein:
said revolving apparatus includes a closed loop track and a plurality of linked cars, said cars having wheels guided by said track, and
said means for generating power includes at least one electrical generator linked to and driven by a said wheel.
28. The system as set forth in claim 21 wherein:
each said driven element has an azimuth angle relative to the wind, and
including, for each said driven element, means, connected to said driven element, for adjusting said azimuth angle of said driven element.
29. An aerial power generation system for generation of power from the wind, comprising:
a plurality of aerial wind powered driven elements,
a tow line for each said driven element, each said tow line having an upper end attached to a said driven element and a spaced lower end,
a control line for each said driven element, each said control line having an upper end attached to a said driven element and a spaced lower end,
a revolving apparatus having a center and a plurality of angularly spaced cross bars projecting horizontally from said center, said cross bars rotating about said center, said cross bars each having a tow line attachment point for a said driven element spaced from said center, with said lower end of each said tow line being attached to the respective said tow line attachment point, said cross bars each having a control line attachment point for a said driven element with said lower end of each said control line being attached to the respective said control line attachment point, each said control line attachment point being spaced at a selected distance and angle from the respective said tow line attachment point, and
an electrical generator linked to and driven by said revolving apparatus,
whereby each said control line changes the respective said driven element to high force configurations when the respective said tow line attachment point is moving downwind and changes the respective said driven element to low force configurations when the respective said tow line attachment point is moving upwind, so that downwind moving said tow line attachment points pull with higher force than upwind moving said tow line attachment points, causing said revolving apparatus to revolve and thereby driving said generator.
